The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the lyrics to this song, which is about a girl he fancied. Doug was in a long-term relationship when he walked into the clothing store where a high school student named Sharona Alperin (who had a boyfriend), was working. The age difference (he was about eight years older) and relationship status didn't deter Fieger, who was immediately lovestruck. With his girlfriend looking on, he invited Sharona to a show. Not long after, he broke up with the girlfriend and professed his love for Sharona, creating a weird dynamic where he would come on to her even though she had a boyfriend who often attended Knack concerts with her. It got pretty heavy when Fieger started writing songs about her - they weren't together when he composed "My Sharona." About a year after they first met, Sharona gave in and they started dating. She joined the band on tour and watched as the song Fieger wrote about her elevated them to stardom. The couple were together for about four years (and engaged at one point) before the rock and roll lifestyle and Fieger's alcoholism became too much for Sharona, and they called it off. In the aftermath, Sharona answered questions about the breakup by saying that she needed to become her own Sharona, not someone else's. After a cooling off period, Alperin and Fieger became friends. Alperin was with Fieger the last week of his life; he died of cancer on February 14, 2010.

@@toodlescae I do believe you're spot on with that...that's pretty much the story about this song (and their ultimate relationship) that I've read....it's a neat story of the history of the song. I thought I'd read awhile back as well that Sharona Alperin was (and presumably still is) a successful real estate agent in I believe southern California. Love this song...takes me back to my senior year in HS. Rock on ! :)

Another tidbit about Doug. His brother, Attorney Geoff Fieger, has had a few high profile court cases, Jack Kevorkian, "Jack the Dripper", A lawsuit against Jenny Jones, another for a victim of Columbine school massacre. Geoff also ran for Governor of Michigan in 98 unsuccessfully.

Doug Fieger was a Detroit native. When this song came out, you could not turn to a radio station and not hear it. It crossed every platform. It was on the soft rock stations, the hard rock stations, the pop stations, everywhere. I think even the NPR station was playing it between breaking Jimmy Carter news and the Iran hostage Crisis. OK, maybe not, but you get my point.

As funny as your reaction was, it's NOT an eggplant song! It was the 1979 debut single by The Knack and it was incredibly popular. It reached #1 on the Billboard chart, and stayed there for six weeks. The song’s infectious riff was written by guitarist Berton Averre before he joined The Knack. The late Doug Fieger, the band’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist, loved it so much he promised to make it a song. There was only one problem. The lyrics. Fieger couldn’t think of any. Until, that is, he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, and fell madly in love with her. His love for the raven-haired beauty was like musical cocaine. It sent him on a passionate song-writing jag that produced, among other songs, the band’s biggest hit, “My Sharona.” An interesting sidelight: “My Sharona” was the song that helped genius “Weird Al” Yankovic, who parodied the song with “My Balogna,” to score his first hit song. Great tune!

In 1999 I had just got out of the Army and was living in Norman Oklahoma and a friend called me up and said the Knack was playing in Dallas. We get to the bar and there were only like 20 people there, almost sad. They put on a show and it was awesome. They played All Along the Watchtower and it rivaled Jimi Hendrix’s version. They were shockingly great musicians. But the coolest part was after the show they came out and drank with us for an hour or more.

This song is featured the 1980’s movie. “Reality Bites” about the GenX decade. My Sharona is playing in a scene where a group of friends, who just graduated from high school are hanging out in a convenience store. Two of the characters are dancing. My Sharona was rumored to be controversial, because of the sexually provocative lyrics back in the 80’s and it was played on the radio in heavy rotation. A true rock classic.

What makes one of my all time favorite songs extra special is watching a gorgeous girl like lex giggle, smile and jam to one of the all time feel good songs ever created.

The song is about the girl...."the younger kind"..."the touch for" which he "always gets it up"......her name is Sharona.....not his "eggplant", as you put it. This song was the shiznit in 1979...and we were jammin' to it!

I don't know if 'My Sharona' is about "eggplant action" - but 'Turning Japanese' by The Vapors (from the same era) definitely is!

Turning Japanese is not about self pleasure. If you listen throughout the song he's talking about taking pictures, he wants her picture and so on. It's a play on the stereotype of Japanese people taking pictures a lot. Whereas it may be a bit un-pc these days it's not about rubbing one out.

This song was about a young woman named Sharona Alpern whom lead vocalist, Doug Figer had a relationship with while he was still married One benefit of this song was that the woman whose name was the title of, actually had gotten across the correct pronunciation of her name

I won this album shortly after it came out by bouncing a ping pong ball into a fish bowl on the AC Boardwalk. Still have it, the whole album is good.

Second Album, titled"...But the little girls understand." is also really good, You should check it out. I had both on vinyl, until I stopped moving a heavy box of ALL my vinyl around and abandoned it ALL. So very much still kicking myself about that. I have been recreating that collection digitally but I wish I had the vinyl, there's just something about the warmth of music on vinyl.

oh wow the memories. this song takes me back to summertime as a kid, the local city swimming pool had a sound system and the lifeguards (mostly high school and college kids) were in control of the music. This song was a regular on the playlist.

As a lover of all rock music from classic rock to Motown, metal, grunge, I mean I love it all... this is my favorite song ever. I know perhaps a bit of an odd choice but it has it all. Its pop, its punk, its rock for sure with a VERY tasty guitar solo. It has the hook on lyrics and a very cool bass line (could have more dirt for my taste). Its got the hot chick and just enough sexual suggestion. It also has a great story with a real infatuation. This song has it all. I'm not going to restate the whole story on this song, that is what google is for. Check it out.
