Hi. This for Dee. The singer you got right. Doug Fieger is the singer. He is the taller one in the middle with the "Joker smile." The guitarist that did the solo is Berton Averre. He is the blonde guy at the far right. Hope this answers your questions. BTW, the whole album is really good. Give it a listen.

"Get the Knack" was both a debut album and essentially a greatest hits album. The songwriting and musicianship are outstanding, with Berton Avare being one of the most talented and underrated lead guitarists of his era. Doug Fieger was the lead singer and principal songwriter of the band (and a multi-instrumentalist). Their drummer, Bruce Gary, was an absolute beast (after leaving the Knack, he played drums in Ringo Starr's All Star Band). Bruce Gary was about a decade older than the other guys & was the real pro in the band. "Get the Knack" is one of the best albums of the new wave era. As a side, the Knack was a favorite of the Doors keyboardist, Ray Manzarek. He sat in on their live sets from time to time playing the keys as only he could.

As far as I was aware she was 17 when he wrote the song but they didn't date until about a year later so it was just a guy falling for a younger girl,not being with an under age girl.so it is in essence just a song inspired by her not something seedy. He was in his twenties so a little bit of an age gap but he was not a dirty old man to be fair. I wouldn't want my daughter being in a relationship like that but as they were both legal it's not too bad. I mean the gap was 8 years.....tom hanks is 32 years older than his wife.....he never gets branded a pervert.

I remember when I was like 12 years old and my brother, who was 4 years older than me bought this album which is called( Get the Knack) and he used to play it all the time and I loved it...such great memories from the early 80's. And by the way the singer of this band, is the brother of the very famous attorney...Jeffry Fieger ..

When Doug Fieger was 25 years old, he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin,[9] who inspired a two-month-long run of songwriting, as well as eventually becoming his girlfriend for the next four years. Fieger recounted that "It was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat; I fell in love with her instantly. And when that happened, it sparked something and I started writing a lot of songs feverishly in a short amount of time." Fieger and Averre worked out the structure and melody of the song. This song was huge between my junior and senior years in high school. As others have said, this song is about a girl (Sharona Alperin). She was 17 at the time, but singer Doug Feiger fell hard for her. My high school girlfriend broke up with me to date a guy who was like 24 so that kind of thing wasn't unheard of back then. The two started dating for a while, though it didn't last. However, the two remained friends. Feiger died of cancer in his 50s and Sharona frequently visited him at his death bed. My old high school girlfriend and i are also still friends, more than 40 years after the end of our relationship.

This song was never one of my favorites because you NEVER heard this extended version on the radio and the guitar solo was cut out. I was a teenager when this song came out but I was in my late 30’s before I ever heard this solo. First time I heard the solo, I almost fell out of my chair. Possibly the best ever.

You guys crack me up. And yeah it's about a girl of course and her name was Sharona. I haven't been on this channel in a while but damn I completely forgot how incredibly beautiful and sexy and smart and patient and funny Mel is, just slays me, lol. You know it's funny of course this was that huge huge hit and yeah the guitar solo is absolutely blazing but everybody in this band was actually really really good. And as a drummer I think you appreciate the drums on some of the other songs on this album. That whole album was fire. Check out one from the Same album called your number or your name. I think that's the name of it. It's a good romp and there's a lot of Tom work in there and I don't know it just is so fun. But then I have some slower stuff that's more like a ballad and it's beautiful and it's so good all the way through. For example, check out the song from this album called, Maybe tonight. It's really slow but it's got this almost super convincing Beatles middle eight in it it's so weird and dreamy and harmonic and beautiful.

Sharona is a girls name, that he's singing about. This came out just before I turned 15 and my best friend's name was Rona. We loved this song! 43 years later, she and I are still friends and this summer will be 50 years that we've been friends, since I was 9 and she was 10! And yes, they did use the tune in some commercial! Don't remember what for, tho.

Song Facts; The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the lyrics to this song, which is about a girl he fancied. Doug was in a long-term relationship when he walked into the clothing store where a high school student named Sharona Alperin (who had a boyfriend), was working. The age difference (he was about eight years older) and relationship status didn't deter Fieger, who was immediately lovestruck. With his girlfriend looking on, he invited Sharona to a show. Not long after, he broke up with the girlfriend and professed his love for Sharona, creating a weird dynamic where he would come on to her even though she had a boyfriend who often attended Knack concerts with her. It got pretty heavy when Fieger started writing songs about her - they weren't together when he composed "My Sharona." About a year after they first met, Sharona gave in and they started dating. She joined the band on tour and watched as the song Fieger wrote about her elevated them to stardom. The couple were together for about four years (and engaged at one point) before the rock and roll lifestyle and Fieger's alcoholism became too much for Sharona, and they called it off. In the aftermath, Sharona answered questions about the breakup by saying that she needed to become her own Sharona, not someone else's. After a cooling off period, Alperin and Fieger became friends. Alperin was with Fieger the last week of his life; he died of cancer on February 14, 2010.

The girl's name on the album cover is Sharona. The evil smiling guy named Doug Fieger wrote this while already married, and the band practiced it at his place, so as you might imagine, that marriage didn't last long. I believe he hooked up with Sharona for a short time after the divorce.

When I was either a junior or senior in high school I was riding with my mother when the song Whip it by Devo came on. She instantly turned the song off and said that is a disgusting song and I tried to explain to her that is not what it means but unfortunately people don't listen to the song before forming that opinion. The meaning of the song Whip It is to whip your troubles by taking control of them not slinging the salami. Of course slinging the salami is a lot more fun😂. I can go along with your 1 to 3 selection of songs for your playlist because I think those songs in that order are quite accurate.

I bought the Get The Knack album around 1980 , and played it a whole lot then. I still have it and I still play it now. Its great. You should try "Good Girls Dont" and " (She's so) Selfish". In fact try ALL the tracks on that album, And there are good ballads too. Lucinda and MaybeTonight and Oh Tara.

The word knack was originally pronounced K-nack. Eventually the ‘K’ sound was dropped but the spelling stayed the same. The song is about a girl that he wants to get with named Sharon. But singing “My Sharon” does not have the same ring to it that singing “My Sharona” does. 🙂 I hate to tell you this but the three songs that were your favorites from this era: Sledgehammer, Whip it, and My Sharona are all about getting the booty.😂
