3 Tips for Beginner Knitters: 1. IGNORE THE TAIL. I had this urge to move the tail out of the way, which was a big mistake. Don't move it, just ignore it, and it'll move onto the lowest stich on your "knitting" needle. 2. KEEP GOING. In the beginning, it's going to look really weird, and won't look like knitting. If you keep going, it'll look a lot better. Trust me on that one. 3. DON'T PULL HARD. This one is important. If you pull hard when you're knitting on each stich, it'll get really tight and won't allow you to keep knitting. If you give it a nice, gentle tug, it'll work out fine. I hope these helped, and happy knitting! :)

I just found this channel and I love it. My mom was a knitter, but I never picked it up. She passed last year (2022) and I found all her yarn and needles when cleaning out her house. I didn't want to get rid of them as I remember watching her knit on many occasions. So, I brought everything home and it's just been sitting around my house. I decided on a whim to see if I could learn how and found this channel. I watched how to do the casting stitches and now am working on my first row. I am so excited!!!

Ch1ck0n Pie- to slow it down for you, you cast on as many stitches as you want. Then, Put the empty needle through the first stitch (they should be facing the same direction). grab the crafting end of your yarn (the one that is attached to the ball) and put it in between the two needles. now you grab the stitch on the left and basically put it on the right (sorry don’t know how to explain that part).

Loved watching this video! It was the first one I clicked on when searching for knitting videos. My 14 yr old granddaughter and I are learning together (my mom taught me when I was a little younger than Elissa but I got bored with making potholders and gave it up.) We attempted to learn with books but had to find a video to really understand. Be patient, it takes a bit to get it down. At one point, Elissa said to me, "If you weren't here, I would have already given up." I said to her, "If you weren't here, I wouldn't have started!" It helps to have a knitting buddy to keep each other encouraged and moving forward. Like I told her, the most professional knitter in the world started at the very same place, learning to make a slip knot and to cast on! Don't give up!!!

Okay you guys... I was going insane trying to do this yesterday... But I was using waaay too small of needles (aluminum) and my yarn was way too thin too... I got some thicker yarn, and bigger bamboo needles (I had to get 8mm because that's all the store had) and I totally got it tonight! So listen to what she says and use the thicker yarn and bigger bamboo needles! It makes all the difference for when you're starting out!

Thank you again!!!!! Also someone asked me to make a Pom Pom for a hat. I looked at different videos, I tried yours, she loved it!!!!!!! After I cast on and I’m ready to progress to the knit stitch is where it all falls apart. Does that tail get “tied off” somehow? That tail left over from the cast on makes the first stitch so loose that I can’t progress into any kind of decent knit stitches, it all gets loose and a long tail forms between the left hand needle and the right hand needle. Not sure if that paints a clear enough picture of my difficulties.

The first row or two after your cast on row are going to be kinda ugly until you get some experience. Don't worry about it for now. After you get a row or two in, things will start to even out and you will start to see more uniform stitches. Just try to work on a consistent tension so things stay nice and even all the way down. There is kind of a fine balance between how tight to pull the stitch after you finish it. If you pull too tight, you will have more trouble getting you needle through the stitch on your next row. If it's too loose it is easier for you to lose stitches off the end of the needle. At first, do whichever is more comfortable, but in my experience, a little toward the loose side is better. If you are asking about the little tail of string left over from the first stitch you cast on, don't worry about it for now. When you finish your project, you will come back and weave that into your stitches to hide it. You don't need a very long bit of yarn for the tail. Just need enough of a little tail to go through about 6-10 stitches so there's enough friction to keep it from slipping out. You will get to where you can estimate how much yarn you need for your cast on as you gain experience. Especially if you do the same project over and over. My best advice is to not get too frustrated and rip everything out so fast. Keep going even if it's really ugly. Just keep making knots. It will take you probably 20 or 30 rows (or more?) before you start to get the hang of it and it starts to click. When I started I would look at it after 3 or 4 rows and be frustrated with how ugly it was and unravel everything. Then start over and get frustrated after the first few rows. I finally just decided I was going to do a washcloth and didn't care how ugly it was. After a couple dozen rows, things started to look more even. The bottom half of that washcloth was not too bad. (The first half was butt-ugly, but let's not talk about that here.)
@starkcd
@starkcd 5 жыл бұрын
One more thing that I forgot about in my earlier, novel-length answer: When you are doing your stitches, you need to keep the ends of the needles close together and the yarn/stitch as close as you can to the needle's tip without losing the stitch off the needle. The more you pull the yarn as you move the stitch from one needle to the other, the longer "tail" you will get between stitches. If your yarn is very close to the tips and your tips are very close together, you will get nice tight stitches. But, you also run a greater risk for losing the stitch off your needles. That is why wooden needles tend to be best for beginners. It's a crime that they sell "beginner kits" with metal needles. Metal needles are the absolute wrong thing for a beginner. After you get comfortable you can move on to metal or other materials. (My preference are carbon fiber needles with metal tips. Just a little more drag from the carbon fiber with the sharpness and slickness of the metal tips. Just right!)

If you kinda push the right needle (the one the stitch is going onto) through the stitch a little bit AS you are pulling up to pull the stitch off the left needle, it will make it easier to hold onto the stitch. There is a fine line between making stitches too tight, (which helps the stitches stay on the needle--not fall of as easy) and too loose (which makes it easier to get into on the next row but makes it easier to lose the stitch off the needle). You will have to figure out that tension for yourself. Once you figure out that sweet spot your knitting will become more consistent and look so much better.

For the first time in my life, I got something on the first try. THANK YOU FOR THISE BLESSED BEGINNER SERIES. For everyone struggling, I suggest slowing down the video and not being afraid to constantly press the rewind button. Also, I watched two different videos for absolute beginners before I watched this one, because the first two didn’t make sense to me. All our brains learn differently so different teachers will have different success with their students. So if this video isn’t making sense, find another one. And another one. And another one. Best of luck and if you can’t figure it out, give yourself a break and come back to it later. Try to find someone in your family or friend circle who knows how to knit so you can get instruction from them in person. KZbin tutorials are never ideal when trying to learn something like this.
