Interestingly his beliefs of justice are remiscent of Robespierre's concept of "Virtuous Terror" being the means to order the utopian society he sought to create. "Virtue without Terror is meaningless. Terror without Virtue is cruelty." Also charitable interpretation? Why is that? His interpretation seems to be the right one given all the points in the book you've mentioned. Additionally Lord of the Night backs up this interpretation. Charity is giving something for nothing. Haley gave you those points to pick up on in the book and you did so. So what's the problem?

Man imagine if Konrad was found and had Sanguinius help him like how he reshaped his legion using Horus and the Luna Wolves to teach then. Then his legion became the teachers of morality for the Night Lords would have made such a great story. Love Konrad and Sanguinius they are great. Logar is still a turd though.

The new depiction sounds less deep. The original Kurze believed, in his hubris, that only he knew best. He knew the right future, he knew his methods would get the job done faster and with less lives lost. So he despaired as he realized he fixed a symptoms (crime) rather than the cause (lack of altruism and civic spirit) and he broke when he realized he met his fate on the road he took to avoid it. New Kurze is using badly implemented schizophrenia as a form of dissociation. Senua's Sacrifice got a stronger portrayal of mental illnesses and the emotional conflicts it causes.

I think the thing that makes it hard to always explain what Kurze is doing is the fact that sometimes he's acting on his visions. Although he seems to hate his visions a lot of the times, he does also actively work towards making them happen. There was one part of the book where Sevatar asks "should we attack the raven guard?" and Kurze then has a vision of them fighting at a much later time and says "not yet". He adheres to the timeline of his visions when it comes to certain decision making. I think that is one of the ways that HELPS explains some of his weird actions (stalling with the investigation / rushing with exterminatus of Nostromo). The timeline of when things "should" happen could be used to explain some of this, a little.

I love to see and learn more of the Night Lords, and the Primarch himself. I do believe, he just needed some help from a brother of his, or the Emperor to help him, understand things better. Because, having heard you're idea of split personality, it kinda makes sense in the way he behaves and how he turns out. I got the Limited Edition book myself, and while reading it, thought Curze was some kind of, broken being, in the way the book/story, jumps back and forth through out its pages. Cause I really want to know, what the Eighth Legion was actually like, before they became the Night Lords; because if "Night Haunter", is colouring the past events on Nostramo with his own twisted tales of events, then Curze is still an unknown character in a way, kinda like how I see the Eighth Legion. The 4th Legion before they became the Iron Warriors, is more or less written about and a good idea as to what and how they were, is easy enough. There's not a lot on the 8th Legion, and I want to know more about that, before they became the "Night Lords".
@LethargicGM

From what I understand, the 8th legion was a terror weapon even before Curze was found. When the Nighthaunter and the Nostraman joined them, they became more extreme.

UGNAvalon. Sure, but one does not exclude the other. Criminals know they are doing wrong, yet they are drawn to crime and may enjoy it. The traitor Primarchs were all flawed in some way and they either lacked self-awareness or were downright hypocrites. Curze on the other hand knew very well what he had become, but he embraced it with his fatalism, justifying his actions by blaming them on his nature (/ the Emperor for making him that way). Here some more quotes: "The children of Nostramo came from spoiled stock"; "It's the burden of knowing the future and being rendered powerless to do anything about it. I am cursed, brother. And so I must sin"; "Some men are just evil, Vulkan. There is no why, it just is"; "'You are a bringer of death, a warrior, a merciless killer that-' 'No, Curze. You are mistaken. You're the merciless one, you're the sadist. I never realized it before Kharaatan. Fear and terror are not a warriors weapons, they are a coward's. I pity you because you have spent so long languishing in the gutter amongst the filth that you've forgotten what it's like to be in the light. I doubt you can even see it through all that self-loathing.'"

when you start torturing and killing people for what you see as justice at first it will disgust you, but then as you keep on doing it, you start to become desensitized and it stops bothering you, and as you keep on doing it more you may start to enjoy it. that is what i think happened to konrad curze as he continued to torture and kill whom he saw as guilty. also in your other video you mentioned konrad struggled with how to know right from wrong, just and unjust etc, that and his growing guilt of the atrocities he had commited was, i think, what led him to become an insane psychopathic monster. i feel that the primarch book for konrad curze really supported your other videos on konrad very well all in all enjoyed reading the book and really enjoy watching your vids

I feel like Curse would of had a chance if he crusaded with Sanguinius. They would seem to balance each other, mostly in their flaws. I don't feel real animosity between the two other than hurt brothers, more than the others. Together, I'd imagine, would have been more difficult for outside forces to tamper their future sight. And be probably the best representations of Angels of Death. Either fight an honest battle against Glorious Hawk Boy, or spend one night with his brother, Mr Sinister. In the books The Prince of Crows and The Long Night, Sevatar calls out Curze on his bullshit, and then goes on to have an amazing transformation, assisted by a little girl. Curze on the other hand, chose to become The Night Haunter, which is why he said this is the death I chose. Edit: Sevatar said to Altani that psykers can't rule the 8th because of their melancholic blood. That would be magnified by an order of magnitude with Curze. Wasn't it Curze who, on the subject ot the rot of his Legion said that if he started to purge them he would not know where to stop? Conrad's tragedy is that he was a cold and mercilles bastard, but only because the believed it was for a greater purpose. When that collapsed, he, in turn collapsed.

@@jordancarter9786 Thanks Jordan. I came to 40k as a hardcore Dune fan. There is no debate that at least the Imperium is heavily inspired by Herbert's work (The Emperor, Fish Speakers inspiring the Sisters of Battle, the Quizarette inspiring the Eclesiarchy, the machine crusade and the shared existence of mutated navigators), but the more I read of the Horus Heresy, the more I see characters from Dune being adapted to 40k. So, as previously stated, Curze is Paul Atreides. Both possess faulty prescience that ultimately destroys them both. Further, both possess a pair of competing personalities (Paul and Muad'ib vs Curze and the Night Haunter). Both willingly engage in war crimes to purse a greater good based on their unique sense of justice, and both struggle with their role in their respective crusades. More importantly though, both have imperfect prescience that they struggle to navigate, which leads to their adoption if self-destructive fatalism. Ultimately, both wilfully die as mad prophets of sorts in pursuit of some martyrdom. It's not just with Curze though. We all know Big E is Leto the 2nd (the God Emperor ( though the Emperor wears his godhead more like Paul, but with his internment he takes on a characteristic much like Leto's divided God role). Further, Sanguinias is like Leto 2 before his ascension. Guillimam's theoretical and practical mirrors Mentat computation, Angron embodies the Fremen/ Sardukar reckless abandon, etc. What really sealed the deal for me was Vulkan actually. His grounded humanism and compassion, along with his perpetually likens him to Duncan Idaho. Throughout Dune Duncan is tortured, murdered and sacrificed only to be resurrected countless times to serve the Atreides. He is seen as an ideal human among living Gods, who serves as the champion of average people and the voice or morality for the divine Atreides. As a result of Duncan's value, he is elevated with immense powers uniquely bestowed by the Ateriedes meddling. This also explains the nature of his deaths. Most come from Curze, which though Paul only got Duncan killed once, that death seemed more chaotic and meaningless, whereas his apparent deaths in service of Big E were seemingly foretold and a necessary step in his development, much like the many deaths caused by Leto.

Konrad was also working out why and what it was that he'd do for the Emperor to send an assassin to end him, of what was he guilty. A brilliant idea to start that new series of videos Arch explaining the mindset of each primarch. I am really curious how you are going to cover the way Horus was thinking. The three first books of the HH series showed very well how he gradually delved into Chaos but I found the reasons behind this choice a bit weakly developed. For example, arrogance is something that we don't see that much in Horus's character in the trilogy, it is a trait we see in many stories or in novels such as Fear to Tread where he declares his hate and envy over Sanguinius.

You are right man! Dunno, I think Horus was overestimated in the end of the day. At least in the beginning he was a mere puppet of Erebus, Lorgar and the Chaos Gods and he had no masterplan behind his actions. But even in the point where he tries to overcome the Chaos influence and enjoy its gifts without honouring his part of the bargain, he still doesn't really know what his position is. And this was always his fate. Was he a son or just a tool of the Emperor's will? Was he just one of the primarchs or the Warmaster? Was he able to rule over the Chaos Gods or was he always a plaything of theirs?

“I have the shiniest meat statue” - Konrad Kurze (attributed) Guy Haley did manage to write an entire Night Lords novel without it devolving entirely into grotesquely detailed body-horror as “A lesson in Darkness,” did. For this, he should be commended. Upon further reflection, it strikes me that as Curze is constructing the eponymous meat statue, the part he has the greatest difficulty in rendering is the face of the emperor.

Perhaps his vision of a future where his father has him killed was like the one of the child harming him, fake, fake visions from the Chaos Gods. So he never truly saw his father's face, only ever a twisted false version.

Konrad Curze, fiction's 2nd most horrific version of Batman (the most horrific is The Batman Who Laughs) | 1:55 - "I am justice. I am judgement. I am punishment....and I surrender." That last bit was almost comedic. | 3:10 - e.g. the ones closer to the Adeptus Mechanicus than most...yet he doesn't have his own day of commemoration, just because he was killed by pretty-boy, rather than the Warmaster himself. | 5:20 - Yeah, stealing to survive or stealing for selfish reasons...makes no difference to him. | 6:45 - He'd probably understand the Tau, if he survived to the 41st millennium. | 8:24 - Similar rationale for Lorgar's actions. | 12:06 - Well, you've already done Lorgar's "mind of" video. | Some of the time, he was...it was complicated.

Because of the time of year I am imagining Curze as Santa, and its terrifying. imagine coming downstairs on Christmas morning and finding daddy made the naughty list so the tree is drapped in entrails and gobbets of flesh and presents are wrapped in his skin. too dark? lol.

They did the embodiment of justice absolutely no justice.... I was very disappointed with how they spun it. I enjoyed every bit but was bitter sweet. Like they had to force this story as they had nothing for backstory from the heresy and craned it all together for this book.

I don’t like how when Kurze reunited with the Emperor he never did his own research into his visions when precognition is a known quantifiable thing and can be studied he never did. One conversation with any of his librarians or Thousand Sons or Magnus but no he just ran with his visions as though they were true, when I imagine in any training when it comes to precognition is to recognize in real time if your not on a self fulfilling prophecy like Kurze was.

I'm pretty sure he did at some point since he was quoted as saying his visions were true often enough to warrant attention
