Strongly recommended to do Walpurgis Night full album listen. They did a lot of musical genres in one album including City pop, funky pop, edm, R&B, soft ballad, anime rock, etc. The whole album is on another level than a regular kpop album.

Yeah it's really hard but for me it's still Everglow's La Di Da ! That song has everything what i like. LaDiDa was more than a 80's song. It has synthwave elements and cyberpunk style :D I don't think i'll hear anything better this year! Second close would be LaLaLiLaLa! I've became Pineapple this year so if i put a song on the second place by a new group says a lot :D But this year we had a lot of fantastic songs! This some Stupid theory from me They're witches already... From the lines " I wanna ride a broom and Fly " as well as " 6960 magic" which refer to NGC6960 , the witch broom nebula. They wear glittering clothes because they ate the apple ( Apple MV describe apple to be glittering ). The music Video is about Sowon's attempt to save the girls , apparently , the rest of the members were burned at stake in apple MV , because apple MV is the start of the Walpurgis Night, a celebration of witches burned at the stake. In the apple MV , the hair burning Ritual shows the apples= Glass bead burning , except Sowon's , Because no one cut her hair at the back. 1. Sowon come to save rest of the girls , she enter the tunnel ( Symbolism that she's leaping through the time ) To save the girls who were burned at the stake in apple MV. 2. They dance in the moon ( Disco Ball ) Night , which is part of the Walpurgis Night festival , Yuju seems to be the Queen of that night , consistent with her being the only one with a CROWN in apple MV. That also explains the overwhelming number of mirrors in the MV , an object related to Yuju's Power. 3. We know that sowon obtained a unique ability from the bookstore owner ( Marchen Book ) , in the same way eunha got her Navilleras/butterflies. She used this ability to travel to the future ( Tunnel ) , where the people celebrate The Wlapurgis Night , where the rest of the burnt Member Re- appear ( This is a holiday ) , This is in the lyrics the girls can dance to the moon night again 2 years ago , on the night of april 30 ( european holiday for Walpurgis Night ) , Gfriend Release Time For the Moon night. 4. They were unsure and afraid of the future in TFTMN , but in MAGO , they are expecting the future , they are no more hesitant ( Hakuna Matata = No worries ) of which crossroad to take , as the lyrics suggest " Joy or Sorrow everything will be me ". 5. In the end , sowon managed to get them back and they went through the same tunnel , going back in time , this tunnel almost similiar to the tunnel in the sunrise. There is also a fish eye lens scene in the last dance Sequence , which is a glass bead shot, which is sowon glass bead ability , she can look the girl wherever they are through her glass bead , as revealed in in the marchen book. As well as sunny summer when eunha saw something through sowon jewelry ( The diamond she nearly swallowed ). This tell us that sowon , after meeting with the bookstore owner , can probably look at the girls in the future... Thats why she was able to locate the time line to go through. If eunha uses the power of the butterfly vis-a-vis, her power to create lucid dreams ( she goes back in time .. to the time she is last a sleep ) . Sowon can use the unique power vis-a-vis, her power to see the girls using the glass bead . The song lyrics also combination of their other song lyrics , esp. Navillera and fingertip. They're going back in time now .. opposite of the old GFRIEND that continuosly goes right by the ever so flowing concept of time. Hence the Railroad , Trains , Seasons , Bridges , And Trees. We get to see the most obvious indication of Twin Eunha and Sinb. They have been giving us hints of their " ONEness " in fingertip ( When Sinb astral projection comes out of Eunha ) , Love Whisper ( Yerin x Sinb which turns out to be Yerin x Eunha in navillera ) , TFTMN ( Couch Scene where sinb shadows Eunha , Choreo as well ) , Sunrise ( Fingertip ending eunha crying while a sleep , Sunrise Ending Sinb Crying While A sleep ) , Apple MV ( They Two Kissing The same apple ). This time , we actually see the two of them in similiar Outfits , Short hair , Same set Of earrings , And pearl Necklace. THEORY 1 My theory also is that not only are Eunha and Sinb Related .. but also Umji.. the scene at the start , where Umji and Sinb appear out of nowhere next to eunha just keeps bugging me. Then it occured to me how GFRIEND like using Greek Myth aa part of their Storyline ( Orion the hunter and artemis in Fingertip ) , ( Artemis and apollo in TFTMN ) , ( Ariadne and theeseus in labyrinth portion of apple ). Eunha , Umji , and Sinb reminded Me of the Greek of goddess of the night ( girls only meet at night / Dreams ). Witchcraft and Magic ( Apple Mv +magic grantedby the love whisper lake ) , and Crossroad ( Overall theme ) = HECATE She has 3 Faces that signify her dominion over the stars , The sea and The underworld , these face are each represented by Twin eunha + Sinb With Umji as the dividing line. Star : Eunha means Galaxy.. she is associated with Navillera ( Blue Butterfly of the Stars ) her butterflies in Apple Returned back to the stars . Underworld : Sinb is the one who tempted Eunha to bite the apple ( Devils temptation ) Sea : Umji paper boat in summer rain .. she is in Summer rain Outfit in the butterfly Effect , the Aquarium Scene in Crossroad When Umji got Rejected by Yuju. In eunha and sinb Kiss in apple MV , She is the apple ( MNET comeback Stage intro Where she has an apple on the Beambalance , as well as in concept Photos ). That divide the Stars ( Eunha ) and the underworld ( Sinb ) , The Sea pretty much divides The underworld and the Stars. She was able To connect Sinb and Eunha , In Sunrise By completing the puzzle , She play piano Reflecting Eunha Who Play a piano and the same Music sheet. Much like How the Sea Reflects the stars at night .. THEORY 2 in the mirror dance scene Yuju has the word " Amour " while Eunha has the word " Angel " by their Belts , this refer to " CUPID " as Amour is His Latin Name , While He is in the form of a Cherub , A higher form of ANGEL. This was awesome. It felt like their take on the 80’s trend in K-Pop right now. It certainly felt 80’s inspired, but the visuals felt kind of 70’s inspired as well (at least US 70’s). The disco vibe also made me feel it could exist in the same universe as “When We Disco” with JYP and Sunmi. I liked “Apple” a lot when it came out, but it sort of faded away from me and doesn’t stand out in my memory. “Fever” still stands out as a moment to me, but I think I’m in the minority on that. “Mago” hit me so hard because, like you PD, I’m a sucker for retro vibes. I’d have to say that this is probably my favorite song that GFriend has and I hope it doesn’t sort of fade away from me like some of their other songs have. Keep up the amazing work! Cheers!

Currently though, I find myself gravitating more to Korean music because I’ve been studying Asian (and foreign in general) cultures to broaden my horizons in preparation for teaching high school literature. Secondly, this is a reaction video to a K-Pop song. Naturally the discussion is going to be based on K-Pop. If I had a western specific song that I wanted to draw comparisons with, I would have done that. At the time I commented though, I didn’t. Buddies have been blessed. I'll miss their cuter, innocent side though. I doubt they'll turn back as they've matured, but I'm for it. It's natural for a group to change and mature like Twice did, but I hope their orchestral music comes back now and then! GFriend is my ult group for many reasons. Their music has always had a different vibe, their dances were strong and insync, and the members are all talented and loveable. It's one of those fandoms where you may have a bias, but every other member is a biaswrecker. They work as a team and they get almost equal lines and screentime these days. I love how they switch up the choruses as well. Not just the moves, but who is in the center. Different members get to sing the killing part or high notes so you never know what to expect. I love that they were always insync cause you couldn't tell who was the weakest dancer was, nor would one member always stand out. The fandom is very peaceful and every member gets compliments a lot of compliments Who is the most popular member? You'll have to make a wild guess lol They are really one of a kind. You can tell they are all happy and healthy and they are good friends, so I hope they continue to make music for many years to come 😊

We talked about this comeback together and agreed that while it is a change, it still has the authenticity and sincerity of Gfriend that we love so much. I always enjoyed and respected Gfriend but overall I'm not a big fan of cute and/or innocent concepts. So I just looked at their stuff from the sideline for a while, but this year holy fucking shit. I don't know if I should feel sorry for people who loved their old style but I'll admit I selfishly love Gfriend 2.0 so much more. I was floored by Apple but MAGO is even better IMO, it has just the right amount of everything and is just really fun. Easily my favorite Gfriend song.

From the perspective of a fan of Gfriend for years who has a beat friend who ults them...we are both super super happy with the change. We talked about it and agreed that is the sincerity and emption of Gfriend (along with incredible performance) that we value which is why this song still sounds authentic to them. So some others may miss their old sound, but this couple of old fans love the change. We loved Apple too but my other favourites of theirs are Time foe the Moon Night, and Rough. Besides, Fingertip in 2017 was a *huge* change too and we enjoyed it. Somehow Gfriends changes are coherent and work for them. As a huge gg fan I would compare their successful growth of concept and music to Apink...it is rare to love both the old and the new of a group and good for Gfriend for being one of those groups to their fans 😊 This song though really ia a GREAT gg comeback by pop standards and imo Gfriends songs aren't always that so no wonder it works ahaha i am glad that non fans enjoy it!

@@totally5694 im not discrediting bts as a group. They are good. But I liked their older songs, its what they were made to be, a group focused on raps and hiphop. They transitioned too much to western pop sound that they cant showcase their hiphop sound as much anymore. I just dont want gfriend to go the same direction and forget where they came from. I dont want gfriend to change concepts to please the international audiences. They are one of the only groups that kept the sound of 1st/2nd gen kpop. Most groups are integrating too much. I like the variety but they are straying away from the roots too much.

Oh girl there are many retro songs released this year but this is the richest one musically, the vocal harmonies, instrumental, and melody have blended SO well together, the mixing is phenomenal and the chord progression sounds light it comes straight out of the disco era (I'm not an expert in pop music so I can't point out exactly which period of time), this is so good I love gfriend because of their complicated, orchestral, pop-rock sound but their two latest comebacks blew me away! Frants is an amazing producer, Apple and Mago did an amazing throwback to earlier pop music, and Frants has shown that he has understood the genre and concept SO well, I never expected to like Mago so much, but i just simply LOVE it, and their latest three albums are huge musical growth for them, the besides and consistency in the trilogy is amazing! I sort of think that they'll go back to their signature sound after this (which I love) but I hope Frants produces more songs for gfriend in future! (It's still not as amazing as Apple for me, but it doesn't make it any less amazing for me haha)

i like apple more. for me apple is the BEST SONG OF THE YEAR [followed by dua lipa's physical, jesise ware's spotlight and kylie minogue's magic]. but mago is just as glorious and so in tune with the year's disco wave, with a twist of sweetness that only gfriend does. another thing that i have loved from gfriend's 2020 releases: it's been a journey of full self discovery, deconstruction and liberation. i love how somber and melancholic "crossroads" was - like "letting go" is hard but inevitable; then they come back with full firey, sexier and edgier vibe with "apple" - as if giving into the temptation was a step towards maturity. and finally "MAGO" is full freedom in accepting both the sweetness and darkness inside themselves. this proves how gfriend constantly have some of the most thoughtful comeback narratives in kpop. i've got no other option but to STAN.

I love how Twice & Gfriend take time to grow, and around the same time too. It's different from their older songs yes, but it still feels like "them" you know, like if you follow them & their discography from the start -- and by that i don't just mean the title track but their entire B-sides, looking at the lyrics & all, you will not say that their transformation is too sudden & stuff. You'll appreciate the direction they are taking for a more mature-like track even more as they grow.
