That’s why I loved Glassy, it feels like Yuri without overusing her powerful voice, this screams Jo Yuri charisma and personality more than “oh look she’s an awesome vocalist”, everybody knows she’s an amazing vocalist, people need to discover her personality

yes !! I think at this point, Yuri is confident that people know she's an incredible singer, so she can focus on releasing songs that she likes and adapt her vocals to benefit the sound of the songs, rather than adapt the songs just so that she can show more of her abilities.

Contrary to my usual opinion on belting high notes for Yuri, this is such a fresh air that Yuri wasn't given too much high note. And exactly like how PD said she has lots of range, giving her more powerful singing would be too obvious & monotonous. Plus we already have our fair share of Yuri's singing high note in IZ*ONE era. This is 8 out of 10, a solid debut for me.

@@SlavicRat I think that's also a reason ngl She seemed to struggle alot with Izone songs cause they demand large belts for her voice. I can’t believe people (including WIZ*ONEs themselves) tunnel visioned on the idea that Jo Yuri would do only ballads/OSTs. Yuri, in PD48 said that people told her to pursue that rather than an idol career but she said she really wants to be an idol and has been through 2 survival shows to get there now. How many people have forgotten this? She’s such a talented idol, it’s weird to see people just assume that she’d give up her dream to do something stereotypical of a good vocalist.

Company probably testing the market. Her sounds is perfect, every song in her album is great but personally 'autumn box' is the best track for me in the album. Hope her next album is greater and can see her produce work. (IZ*ONE - 'Someday' still one of the best song for me) Besides, if you look at her schedule recently...company is giving a lot resources to her and well promote. iirc Yuri mentioned once that she barely had opportunities to sing anything other than belting high notes in izone. (Probably in a vlive im not totally sure.) Luckily we got that in D-D-DANCE even though it wasn’t an izone title track. For me this was a breath of fresh air not only for me but also for her. She definitely had a chance to showcase her breathy lower vocals in this track and I’m happy for her, but ngl I hope she has more opportunities to showcase more of her range. This song gives off one side of her vocals that we don’t get to hear too often but I hope the next title track will do her voice complete justice.

to pd and the viewers i recommend checking out yuri’s live performance on “it’s live” !! you can hear her strong live vocals very well on there and in my opinion she sounds even better live than in the recording! after hearing her own live version i can tell that the producers wanted the recording to sound a certain way but when she does it with her own twist she adds more of the power vocals you were talking about!

At first I had the same reaction you did: I wanted to hear Yuri go "bigger", at least during the bridge or final chorus. But as I've listened to the song more, I actually appreciate how she chose to "under-sing" it. It matches the breezy pop vibe of the song and makes it easier to listen to on repeat. Every time the songs over it's like I crave to hear it one more time because I'm not quite satisfied. And every part feels like I can sing along/can get stuck in my head. It kind of reminds me how Christina Aguilera "under-sang" Genie in a Bottle, which is part of what makes that song catchy too. I'm so pleasantly surprised by Yuri's debut. Can't wait to see more from her as a soloist.

It's true that Yuri's voice have a lot more range, power & habilities, but i think, she using this "airy, low & kinda whispered" style is what makes this song so unique and impressive, mostly for wiz*ones who we already know what she is capable of. I think (and probably other wiz*ones too) that if the song ended up having more high notes and powerful sings (using all Yuri's voice habilities & range) it will be an amazing song (obviously) but it wouldn't be as NEW like her using the style she used for this song, since she used a lot of those high notes and powerful sings in IZ*ONE. But it's obvious that in the future she will make a BOP using all those high notes and power vocals she have, that's why Im not worried and why I really liked this solo debut :D

Totally agree that this song doesn't use her voice well. They made her mold to the song instead of the song being built for her. The song is lovely and princessy, just not WOW like Yuri can totally be. Also, this came out when so many other bigger groups came out, so she was going to have to fight for attention and to build new fans. @@cloudofreverie786 THANK YOU. She doesn't need to constantly be belting out high notes to be good, or "wow". There's so much more to her than high notes, she has an insane lower register that we haven't heard nearly enough, and of course what we hear in this song as well. Singing out of her own interest and not for capital. Ofc she will belt those high notes in the group because that's the killing part. I honestly think the vocals don’t capture her potential becuase of Izone. PD made a point saying Yuri was mainly used for high notes in Izone and overtime that led to a lot of fatigue in her vocals, and since her debut was so soon aftwerwards i think the debut was just the company trying to play it safer with her vocals and not have her belt extremely high like she did in izone

Its actually a perfect song for Yuri cause you can tell this is how she wants to sing. Yes, she has a much higher register in IZONE songs, but like you said, that's exactly what they use her for in their songs. She brought a lot of lower register notes in this song, while maintaining a poppy and fast paced vibe, which is very hard to do. Her utilization of breath especially stood out making it much more diverse and eloquent. I think this song was perfect if you came into it without expectations. If you had the expectations of her belting then yeah of course you were disappointed but that doesn't nor should it detract from the song. I think it speaks better for Yuri that she sang such a song than what we all thought she would do, it shows she has the range contrary to PD saying the opposite.

The song somehow popped up in my recommended feed even though I never heard of her before, and IZ*ONE was one of the bigger groups that I never got into. However I'm glad I gave the song I shot because I really enjoyed it. I also get that the song doesn't have the typical flair of a debut song, but I do think the softer style makes it stand out in its own way, especially the hook.

this made me curious with what yuju will do since both were known as main vocalists, they can feel boxed to those expectation and stereotype of high notes / expected to sing ballads

Hallo PD I recommend listening to Story of Us. It's her song too from a kdrama and it's also good even tho it has a slow tempo.

9:39 same. i actually thought she was gonna rap on the post chrous so when nothing happened it fell kinda flat. in an era where every 4th gen kpop song features an unnecessary rap this one certainly was a shock. now idk if girlie can rap but she would've sounded super cool if she did

I agree that this song doesn't showcase Yuri's full vocal abilities, but I don't think it needed too. I think Yuri doesn't need to prove herself as a singer at this point, she can just focus on putting out music that she likes. I love the softer vibes of Glassy and the b-sides show her versatility with more powerful and emotional vocals ;)
