Nerdy facts: 1 Lay spent about 1.4M USD for this MV from his own pocket 2 Lay promotes his own genre called M-pop, basically a fusion of Chinese trad music with modern music 3 Lay made a lot of beat (he's a beatmaker), and I notice he loves trap a lot, like A LOT 4 Lay made his music to introduce China's music to the world 5 There are about 300-400 casts on the MV 6 The MV has the starting storyline for his songs in this particular album. It centered around a classic, about a warrior called Xiang Yu (who fight alone because people are turning their back on him) and his beloved concubine (who kill herself after Xiang Yu was killed) 7 Lay did a lot for this MV and album. If you see the credit title, you will find him as a lot of things, from executive producer to writer 8 Lay and his crew learn krumping from a world krumping master for a month just to dance in the MV. Krumping is a very exhausting dance genre. 9 I'm sleepy and I need my 8-hour sleep so farewell. I love your work! You're doing a good job so far! :D

The MV was filmed 7 months ago at Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios in China, the world’s largest outdoor film studio. More than a hundred background actors were involved in this MV. He personally spent $1.4M for the overall production. The company that made the effects for the Lit MV is Dexter Studios. This is the first time that they have produced a music video as they usually make movies, such as the Oscar-winning "Parasite." The word 莲 "lian" (which sounds like lit in chinese) means LOTUS. The slang the haters used to say to him is 白莲花 (bai lian hua) which means someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside. But lotus is a holy and pure image in Chinese history which is not a small thing like those haters said. The bad metaphor happens these years from some ignorant and stupid people. He speak highly of it and correct the reputation for it as irony to the haters. Another thing is that there's an old metaphor about lotus: 出淤泥而不染 (which he used in the lyric of this song), which means growing and living in the mud/silt but not being stained or dyed by it, referring to the world vs him as a person and his goal and dreams. He used the 2 different sides of the word lotus. The overall MV is based off of Lay’s favorite Chinese historical figure fighting oppression. The MV is the portrayal of a Chinese General’s entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The voice in the first 1min of the MV is actually the voice of a Peking opera artist singing “The Song of Gaixia” which the General composed for his wife Lady Yu (potrayed in Lay’s song, Jade) who later took her own life Lay released his semi-autobiographical book “Independent 24” or "Standing firm at 24." In the book, Yixing talked about how he thinks he has 2 dragons inside him, the good & the bad. He always listens to the good one, which the dragon protecting him and helping through the difficulties. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, strength, and good luck. This could be the reference to the dragon from the mv is helping him to fight the enemies.

Watching this MV was super refreshing. I'm currently majoring in Film Studies and I feel like there haven't been as many cinematic/long narrative MVs from kpop or mando-pop in a while. It looks as though for certain shots, especially the ones outside the palace, they use a particular camera lens that emphasizes the depth of view to really immerse the viewer and show just the grandness of scale. The shots inside the palace and in the dancing scenes were probably then using a standard lens they would use for music videos, making the shot look more flat and like a picture (neither of these are better or worse than the other, it's just how cameras work). I'm not exactly a camera person, but I'm just regurgitating what I remember from my cinematography class LMAO but I really love this video and have watched it like 10 times. I could go on and on about the lighting and color, it's just such a well done video.
It’s part of a two part album and the first part is more to the traditional sound of Chinese music, I think it’s mainly to express his artistic value and promotion purposes. His first part is already the best selling Chinese online album ever! Thanks for your honest review once again pd, we appreciate it and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

So this is the first part of his 4th album and it is is highly conceptual. I think that's why it doesn't really aim to be "the hit of the summer" because trully it's not catchy nor very melodical, which I don't think is very common in Cpop, let alone in kpop! Lit reminded me of "the assambly call" in namanana as I think it really is a way to introduce the story. Now, to get the full impact you have to listen to all of it and you will also appreciate it much more if you understand the narrative behind it. I agree 100%, this is not a commercial song, or album for that matter, and I love that he takes that risk with his music. The video is stunning, all of it and to be honest I don't think I have ever seen a better dragon not even in movies! I loved this MV, song and your reaction.. On a different note, you are the first person I've seen who drinks the MCD iced coffee like me.

When I watched that mv for the first time I was all DAAAAAAMN and couldn't stop going "Oh my God! This is gorgeous!" Then the CGI dragon appeared and I shut up. Mouth agape. I have NEVER seen a CGI dragon be that gorgeous before. Ever. The amount of rendering they would have had to do for that dragon is absolutely freaking ridiculous. The fact that it was a black sky and a black dragon popped on the screen... Could not believe it. Absolutely amazing.
