he shoulda been. Lee was up there with not many others. John was not anywhere near his league. but i think he knew that., Lee had major life issues tho. just one was that he played the same set for like 5 yrs with no new songs even tho he had many brewing. and John got so sick of that he had to leave. fair enough.

He was never satisfied with the results of the recordings. The released version of the album he apparently hated and that was after several different and costly recording sessions at various studios. In the end the record company needed to release a version. Mavers is a tortured genius. What an album he gave to the world.

I met JP after he finished a solo gig in my town,a small club with about 50 people and we stayed talking and drinking for a couple of hours. He was awesome but he is edgy, I did not want to argue with him but he was a bit tricky as beloved Liverpool lost a big game that day, unterstandable. Mariner was the stand out track and I am proud to have told him it was one of the best songs I ever heard, up there with Dylan, Lennon anybody and he really appreciated that.

I feel you mate! I'm coming back to the La's every now and then and there's absolute no F*CKING doubt that Lee could have been above John Lennon's skill if he continued. I mean compare the self written songs from "The La's" to The Beatles' debut album. Then listen to the kitchen tape and you know that he was easily able to even top his own debut. "Tears in the rain" - what a f*cking tune! I'm playing that intro riff very often when I pick a guitar anywhere although it's so simple. But everything he does and did is nothing but timeless. I understand him. I'm a musician and songwriter myself. The problem is it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a song recorded in that "perfect way" as it is in your head when you write/compose it. Most musicians come to the point where they are like "F*ck it, let's just record it as good as possible and go ahead" but Lee never was like that. Unfortunately. Imagine he was and we would have like 10 or 20 albums of "The La's" right now, what a good world would it be to live in.
@thebetbetunderground95487 жыл бұрын
Tarik A. The world simply has a way of hiding perfection from us as cleverly as it could. I don't know why that is, but I have a guess that it's because we need to stay yearning, dreaming, chasing something somehow. And that's why we're talking about Lee Mavers now!
@TarikA7 жыл бұрын
If I were some evil being I would drive to his house, take some of his hairs, clone him, drop him a guitar while he's less than one year old and force him to do nothing but music. :P

There's just so much of that power in him. His way of strumming, his voice - pretty distinctive. When he plays, you are compelled to listen. And what a performance all in all! Tell ya something: I did download this video and I've been watching it so often. I just can't get enough of the mystic in it. Lee's able to conjure something that's altogether ancient, mystical, moving and inspiring - in this performance this ability is laid so bare and so pure. Addictive.
@jimbosaul39964 жыл бұрын
thats very well said. its words i think ive been searching for. lee has all that and more. ethereal, yes - mystical, some power from the universe that makes you sit up and listen. strikes you across the head, makes you stand up & pay attention immediately to witness something great. something slightly beyond this world and i dont even think Lee knows any of this !
@middleclassic5 жыл бұрын
Something about the way that song is sung is absolutely genuine in its delivery. In the interview he says something to the effect that There is nothing fake about them. And listening to how that song is sung just drills down into my inner being. I can't help but shed a few tears when I listen to this. How phenomenally talented they were. Their first and only album is an absolute classic. I can now see why they had such a difficult time releasing the album because every producer is going to want His version on the album. And even though the version of this song from the album in my mind is perfect, then I listen to this and OMG!, it's even better! And I usually hate all acoustic renditions of songs. Not so here. Here it doesn't get much better.

How is it that music, or more specifically, certain songs can affect you in the most surprising way? I absolutely love The LA's album. One of the best albums easily of all time in its entirety. One of the few albums I can put on start to finish and every song is a winner. Just these 2 guys playing right now seem ... very magical in the most natural way. I think is because I just realized these guys are the real deal. No tricks or gimmickry, they've got the goods and I'll be damned if they didn't deliver. The way they pull it off just the 2 of them is almost unbelievable. The way he improvises the guitar solo making noises with his voice gave me a chuckle at first, but that sounded amazing, spot on. I've got a tear rolling down my cheek but I'm not sure exactly why. Me thinks maybe the melancholy got to me ... yea, that's it, the melancholy. I can't believe I didn't go to see this band when they came to Los Angeles and it is really bugging me trying to remember what was going on in my life at that time that would have kept me from seeing them ... hmpf. Oh well, I know I tried but there is no way I could have seen or even known about every great band that came to town.

I also love the Pixies and have seen them three times, two of them with Weezer. Alternative radio, at least in DC, is DEAD these days. @@michaelesgro9506 Your musical background sounds very accomplished. We are also finding similarities in more than just music: My father and sister went to Purdue University. Also have two nephews who are Radiohead fanatics. One of them who went to the Berklee School of Music and another has a side gig playing drums in a band called "Two Rocks Rye." They're predominantly a cover band and sound very authentic. First time I saw them, the bar begged for an encore and got a great rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious." yup ... best version I've seen ... someone should make a high quality recording of their best live performances. Would have loved to be at the concert for that night.

The 2 guys Noel and Liam really wanted to be, but can never be even close to.

***** Lee Mavers has a very rare talent for hooky melodies exactly as this song demonstrates. Although I like Noel Gallagher and a few of his songs are really great, Mavers has more raw talent but utterly wasted of course. Noel has his head screwed on better. Lee Mavers is the biggest wasted talent in all of pop music, sadly.

effluxide I thoroughly agree. I only listen to a few Oasis songs, just not any sung by Liam, I really never liked his voice because he sounds too forced and obviously an attempt to sound like Ian Brown/John Lennon. Lee Mavers is also a genius and indeed the most wasted talent in music history. Syd Barrett would be 2nd and Julian Cope 3rd I guess.

bloodnokian I agree, I think Liam is just OK at best. The songs done by Noel sound the best and some of the biggest hits weren't the best. Noel has written some really good songs. I like his newer album. There are some great songs on that. Mavers on the other hand when at his best was totally infectious. They are the sorts of songs you listen to over and over again. They are immediately addictive despite their simplicity like a Beatles song or something of that quality. This is the mark of a genius. Even the title of the song performed here is ingenious. A Timeless Melody is exactly what the song is. It can take more time to get some of Noel's songs. I think some of his later ones are the best rather than the earlier Oasis. Yes, I agree again about Syd Barret, Another wasted genius.

+effluxide Sad reality. The greatest talent ever, never shared to a world yearning for it so.
