It really saddens me to see people disrespect this timeless band giving a great performance. They aren't a festival or arena kind of band in my opinion but neither were bands like the beatles or the kinks. Lee doesn't give a fuck about looking pretty for the cameras and he never did, which is one of the many reasons their music rings so true. They're about the music not about trying to look good. Love to the La's!

One of the greatest songwriters of all time. He didn't get on with the music industry and for some (non-thinking) people that means that he didn't "fulfill his potential" - as if an artist's worth is measured in their willingness to play the game. Lee has achieved his creative potential. I hope to meet him one day!

Idk man.. He's def showed he is capable, and doesn't owe anyone a thing. But at the same time, all the greats played the game (lennon, dylan, harrison, etc.) until they had the influence to change it. Seems like Lee was knocking on that door then kinda vanished. Still one of my fav albums tho!!

What happened Lee? You were the guiding light for rock n roll post The Smiths. The La's piss all over the bands that came in their wake. Their music is and always was timeless and perfect. Lee Mavers could have been my generations Dylan for sure, he had that much talent and was so driven by his own vision. I hope you are a content and happy man Lee wherever you are and whatever you are doing. You wrote the soundtrack to my late teens, and that's good enough for me.

It's a really interesting point. So few get anywhere near perfection, so they keep trying and they keep boring us to death. Pop music's a pretty limited form though and there really is a limit to genius within it. The Beatles had 8 years. After they split, there were a few brilliant solo moments but nothing anywhere near their collective form. I think Bowie had 13 years (1967-80). After that, the same scenario, a few gems here and there but most of it far from his peak. Nick Drake's interesting: 3 albums, all pretty much flawless but where could he have gone after that? I think he reached his (artistic) goal. Likewise the Las. Though I'd still love to hear more from them, even if it was subpar!

Which guitar is Lee Mavers playing? Martin OM-42?
@plathandpinter

Lee Mavers was a genius. The La's had a genius album, that Lee wasn't satisfied with. As far as i could tell he couldn't give a shit about fame, dont blame him. I know folk from Uni who would see him in house parties killing it on guitar, seen those vids & it's true. But respect the artist, nt all about the coin.

The acoustic looks like a Martin. There's a video somewhere on YT where he discusses his gear. The electric is definitely a Danelectro.

BUILT TO BREAK can't go wrong with small amps wound up to fuck, great sound! Doesn't kill the singer and the PA can carry it all volume wise, also the sound man will LOVE YOU! Haha! And yeah, portable is always good, it's the punk ethic writ large.

Man, the drugs really took a toll on his face. I never saw the LAs live but honestly I think their sound was suited to small clubs rather than festivals or stadiums, it's understandable how they struggled for so long and tried with so many producers to find the right album sound.

rubbish, the reason Stone roses had such great groove was Reni. Pete Townsend wanted him, said best he had seen since Moon! Drummer can make or break sound, Jaki Liebezeit of Can is a master.

@@owengardiner4628 Untrue. Keeping the beat, time, is part of why a drummer is there, yet, not nothing more. It can be nothing more I reason, yet, It's not usual for a drummer to be there purely for keeping the beat only.
