Have to share a bit of history with the Austin Roses that seemed to have been forgotten. When he first started out making a name for himself with introducing re-blooming antique looking roses. One of the problems the rose world had was David's roses were very lanky and floppy. They were young and needed a longer maturing time; they took some three years to really start strutting their stuff. David would always advise to prune, prune, prune till they got older and grew more robust. I have always remembered this and all my Austins have gotten better & better with time. They are more of the old world roses, so give them at least three to four years to make a good judgment. Everything about the plants in general gets better, the health, the flower in size, color, and scent. Not all the varieties are like this. The ones that are smaller usually follow suit with tea's & floribundas' It's the taller ones that most likely have this slow-maturing trait since they have more of the genetics of the old breeds and wild species. Hope this helps ☺

I bought this one year ago and I have to say that’s a very very interesting rose. Those bronze leaves, astonishing fragance like litchees or peaches. Pretty big roses and very floriferous. Otherwise, it is a bushy rose and growth is slow. I dont know if this year is going to improve this point but it’s a masterpiece. According to DA this rose has been discontinued and I think its a shame…

They say it takes 3 seasons or so before David Austin Roses, truly start to shine. I'm glad I saw this reminder. I'm surprised at how large the blooms are! Mine is going into its second season, and it did great last year. It bloomed literally non-stop until the end of the season. But it stayed short. I was thinking it's too small for where I put it and I was planning to give it away. But then, after hearing you to say it gets up to 5 ft.....man I might have to reconsider some things!
@the_gardenerben

It really does take them a little time to find their stride you only have to think about the process they go through to get to being planted in the ground in your home I always say at least 2 to 3 years before a plant really finds its true size blooming capability and even sometimes it’s scent

My LEH was pitiful for the first 2 seasons and while it's still very small, it's finally starting to look like a rose bush. It has a bunch of buds and a flower just opened. The smell is delicious. I thought it smelled like grapefruit, which was a surprise. I planted a Jude the Obscure a year earlier, but it's also just starting to look decent, but still quite small. I feel encouraged that it's going to be worth the wait.

Those that fall below those standards are therefore retired from the David Austin collection"
