Billy is visiting Bath, and he needs a place to stay. On his way to The Bell and Dragon hotel, he stumbles upon a Bed and Breakfast, hosted by a rather interesting landlady.

we read this in 8th grade ELA, and had to write an ending. Mine was this! “No, my dear,” she said, “Only you.” Billy stayed where he was, growing more tired with every passing second. His vision was beginning to blur, as if he was slowly losing consciousness. The landlady had been sneaking glances at Billy quite often, possibly attempting to see every angle of his body. Billy had an unknown shock pass through him, and shuddered. “U-Uh… Ma’am, would you mind if I went to the room I will stay in for tonight…?” Billy felt uneasy, and uncomfortably humid in his clothes. Was it from the atmosphere? The stuffed, dead animals? It must be something else… “Oh, that isn’t a problem at all!” The landlady smiled warmly, trying to get him a bit more comfortable staying here. She led Billy to his room, and peeked in before allowing him inside. “Many thanks.” He smiled back to her awkwardly before walking inside. The landlady took a final glance at him as she wandered off once more. What is she doing…? Billy shut himself in his room, lost in thought. His mind was spiraling into a deep pit of confusion. Why does she continue looking at me? Am I doing something wrong? Do I look strange? After what seemed like hours, he shook away the thoughts and tried to rest. While he slept, something was setting off in his body that woke him up once again. “What is this?” He had no idea what was happening to him. He tried to fall asleep again, this time not questioning anything. The landlady had occasionally checked on him to see if he was out. As soon as he was sleeping again, she walked in wearing a seemingly rusted gas mask. She held a bottle of what looked like nothing, but what was in it was far more dangerous than just air. She opened the bottle after adjusting her mask, and put it near Billy’s nose. After he took it in unknowingly, she closed the bottle and left. “A new friend for everyone is about to arrive!” She giggled quietly, and went to dispose of the bottle. She cleaned her hands and took off the gas mask, then hid that too. “The cyanide didn’t react quickly, so why not make his death be faster than that?” She had a sinister grin plastered on her face, like some kind of twisted porcelain doll. She hummed quietly as she disposed of the evidence, but something happened while she was doing so. “Ma’am?” A single, easily recognizable voice rang out from behind her. Billy was still awake. He hadn’t died yet? The landlady jolted up, frightened by the sudden word. “O-Oh! Mr…” She had yet again forgotten his name. “Weaver,” Billy sighed. “What are you doing up so late?” He was radiating with confusion, unsure of why she was still awake. “Oh, nothing! I was just getting ready for bed!” The landlady quickly pulled out a pillow. “I was searching for my pillow. I left it down here while I was doing my laundry and putting the case back on it.” There’s that same grin… Billy found it hard to believe, but he was too worn out to deal with anything at the moment. “Goodnight, ma’am.” Billy left, but on his way back, his body locked up. He fell to the floor in a coughing fit. “W-What the-?!” He choked out words as he started to feel horrible pain. He tried to scream for help, but his voice was hoarse from choking on one thing. What is this?! He was trying to stand up, but his body fell limp. The landlady walked up in front of him. “What seems to be the problem, Weaver?” She seemingly spat out the last word he would hear. He was weak, before he stopped struggling. This is the end for Billy. He lay flat on the floor, unmoving. The landlady left the hall, chuckling quietly. “I’ll deal with you in the morning…” She took her pillow and went to her room, and fell asleep without another sound.

A very good reading of a clever story but it's still awkward to hear "hearth" pronounced "herth" when it oughta rhyme with heart.
@schisandra
@schisandra 2 жыл бұрын
I noticed that, too. I checked Merriam Webster’s pronunciation, and “heart” + “h” is correct. No alternate pronunciation. Maybe “herth” is a regional thing? Or maybe the reader just didn’t know how to pronounce it? Just idle wondering. Anyway, tiny quibble aside, I enjoyed this story. Well done to the reader! 👍

Funny how he does the woman's voice. Makes me picture a bearded guy in drag, high heels and all. Now there's a BnB I'd never check-in to, goodbye Norman Bates 👋

Y’all are dumb lol, I would explain it but I don’t feel like it. It basically just ends with you knowing that he’s about to get killed and stuffed. It’s just a lot of Easter eggs and hidden details. That’s why you guys might have read it in school. It answers a lot of questions. Id look it up

Here’s an explanation I found on the internet “(If you don't get it, here's what happens: she poisoned the other two men and stuffed them. Billy has read of their disappearances in the newspaper, and now he's to be the next victim! The bitter almond taste in his tea is potassium cyanide.) Does Billy die in the landlady? That night, lying in his bed, Billy Weaver 'passed away', after mysteriously quitting his job and donating all of his money to the landlady. He had said he had found a place where he would be happy, where he did not have to pay for anything, and then simply disappeared. None but the landlady knew he had actually died.”
