Another Canadian checking in. Greetings from Calgary, Alberta. I first noticed your channel because of a thumbnail of Toby Dog! We've had LGD's for 25 years, starting with Kaslo the Kuvasz in the 90's. Since then we've also had Maremma (Frankie & Gypsy) and Great Pyrenees (Rhea) fur-kids. We're city-dwellers but we love their personality and energy. Anyway, I came for the dogs and got absolutely hooked on your easy-going, witty style of storytelling. You just seem so real, Morgan, (unlike many KZbinrs). I'm actually a bit surprised at myself that I find all the poultry footage very Zen. Thanks for including us in your day-to-day life. I envy you, man. 😀

I remember hearing about this some time ago, and very much enjoyed your closer look at the details. One thing I can say about FPAC is, it made real maple syrup more accessible to people who live far away from Quebec and New England. I'm in my 60s now, and remember as a young person that "real maple syrup" was almost impossible (and expensive!) to get. At some point between then and now I noticed that was no longer the case: you could get the good stuff anywhere, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg when you did. Now, with climate change, those old days of "rare and expensive" may return.

Nice! Canadian here, interesting "Cartel" description. We have laws against monopolies here, but there are many many government "approved" type cartel monopoly situations. Milk industry in general, ICBC (insurance) in British Columbia, and to a lesser extent Large farm vs small farm rules (similar to your area, many rules on selling on farm only, or within a certain small distance from your farm if you are small) Giving large operations a distinct and heavy advantage over smaller ones - advantages they already have due to scale. Seems terribly unfair, and seems to me a large reason why farming is in a tailspin...small farms are at a great disadvantage.

Hey Morgan, I'd like to make a small correction about your comparison of the concept of reserves of maple syrup and oil. Countries keep reserves of oil to supply their national market in case of disruption of oil supply. The maple syrup reserve held by FPAQ is to remove extra maple syrup from the market to keep prices up. Like you said, the justification for this is price stability and to make maple syrup a profitable endeavor for producers. It does screw consumers. As an economist, a professor and a Québécois this form of market throttling is inefficient and fundamentally a bad idea for everyone but the producers. Keep up the good work!

Thanx, Morgan, for this episode of GSF stories. I was an accounting major at university and found forensic accounting fascinating. I worked in public accounting very early in my career. So your telling about the maple syrup industry is certainly intriguing to me. It's great to see those scene -stealing barn cats again and the LSG dogs.

When I lived in Barkhamsted CT, I used to tap my maple tree in the backyard and boil down sap in the house. I researched and discovered that the ice in the bucket was 100% water! I tossed that out and started with sap that was somewhat concentrated. I was so distracted during your video when I saw all that ice going in your evaporator.

This was really interesting! I'm glad that I'm in Ontario, because one of the girls at work sells her in-laws' maple syrup at work (it's really good). Her in-laws have pasture land, and no cows. The neighbors have cows, but no pasture land, but lots of maple trees. So they did a swap...her inlaws let the neighbors pasture their cows, and they have the permission to tap the trees. It works out well for everyone. I'm guessing that they wouldn't be doing that in Quebec.

I live in France. While I've not been to Canada, I'm guessing Quebec has more of a French mentality relative to the rest of North America. They tend to regulate everything and share everything. It's pretty nice because you're taken care of, at least at a minimum. Tax is high though, and massive red tape comes with all of it too.
