The problem isn't farmers voluntarily joining a federation. It is once they team up with the government to force people to join and live by their rules. The problem is that people who try to earn a living through free trade are turned into outlaws. The problem is when those who use force and collusion are supported by the law while peaceful people are punished. The problem is that we are being told a lie that the government is responsible for maintaining the economy and thus our financial well being. The truth has been that the more the government has interfered with the marketplace the more the gap between the rich and poor has gotten.

I completely understand anti-federation sentiments, it’s entirely stupid that you cannot sell maple syrup in Canada without some 3rd party regulating all your moves and taking your money. Why should you have to pay a tax for a non-government service? Why should they have to abide by their rules? A man can’t just sell the fruits of his labor anymore?
@brandonfrancey55922 жыл бұрын
Because they do provide a service. They maintain the market they sell into. That's the problem with the American mind set. It's a cut throat business style with razor thin profits where the smallest of setbacks will destroy your business. Then you sell your farm to someone else who will rinse and repeat until they end up selling the farm to a mega corporation because they are the only ones big enough to absorb random fluctuations. With a few rules, which only work if everyone follows them, everyone is better off. Small farms can exist all while producing a quality product. It's the same for milk producers. Farmers in Canada have maximum quotas so they are not trying to extract every drop from cows which is better for the cows, and farmers have a healthy prices that makes milk profitable. American farmers are free to saturate the market until the prices falls so low that many farmers will literately dump milk down the drain because selling it would cost more than they would make.

@@brandonfrancey5592 I understand your position, but it is still immoral to take someone else's property without consent. Also, don't call it a service. If I was to provide you with a "Service" that you didn't subscribe to, didn't want, and couldn't withdrawl from, but allowed me to take your property without approval, I doubt you would call it a "Service". If what the Maple Federation is doing is so great, then why are some farmers tempted to sell on their own? Clearly not all of the farmers are happy with the self-imposed middleman. There's always a better way. If they have to resort to threats and confiscation of property, something isn't right.
@brandonfrancey55922 жыл бұрын
@@MonkeyMind69 It's not immoral and there is consent. If you decide to sell maple syrup, you just consented to the rules. It's no different than anything else. You can't just build a house on a piece of land and try to sell it. There are steps and a system in place to make things fair. Purchasing, permits, inspections. You can't just do what ever you want. There are always going to be assholes who think they can do things better them selves. Reality is they are trying to capitalize on a system they did not take part in. It's like trying to buy insurance after your house burns down. It doesn't work like that. If you want to benefit from the system, you need to take part in it and follow the rules. "If they have to resort to threats and confiscation of property, something isn't right." That's called law enforcement. I can't steal and then sell cars. If I do there are fines and punishments. While the use of tubing has been around for a while you had to ensure your lines were graded the same as drain pipes to get the sap to flow to your collection tank but if you use a vacuum pump and an extraction tank the grade is no longer critical. Another great innovation is the reverse osmosis process. When people ask how much sap does it take to make 1 gallon of sap? Well it depends on the sweetness of the sap. without going into too much detail there is a mathematical formula to calculate the amount of sap required. There is a fixed number of 86 and that is divided by the sugar level in the syrup. The sugar level is measured in a unit called a brix so if your sap has a level of 1 brix of sugar then you would need 86 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. It seems that every time you run the sap through a reverse osmosis it doubles the sugar content in the remaining sap. so if your sap is at 1 brix and you run it through the RO then it hits 2 brix. 86 / 2 = 43 gal. of sap to make 1 gal of syrup. The sap we were collecting in Sask. had a general level of 1.5 brix to start with so when put through RO it would raise it to approx 3 brix then 86 / 3 = 28.6 so you would only need to cook about 30 gal for 1 gal of syrup. If you have maple trees on your own property and want to tap them there are producers who will RO it and boil it down for you and sometimes you do not have to pay cash for it but just split some of the finished product with them. In this way you can enjoy getting outdoors and taping your own trees and enjoying your own syrup without having to dole out a large amount of cash for equipment. The story centered around Quebec and it's producers but there are producers that I know of that reach even as far west as Saskatchewan and would not doubt there are some in Alberta as well but you do need cold nights and warmer days to get to this liquid gold. I am not a producer (SO FXXK OFF THE FEDERATION) and by no means an expert at all but have helped one friend through the process of collection and cooking. OH I almost forgot one great thing about 100% pure maple syrup is that it is diabetes friendly. Maple taffy does not stick to your teeth like other taffy;s that are made as it just melts in your mouth. Also look into Birch syrup as well since it is purported to have many medicinal benefits to it. Just my thoughts and opinions. I wonder if the FEDERATION has a strangle hold on the Birch syrup market thereby inflating the price of that as well. LOL drug cartel bad Maple cartel good HAHAHHAHAHAH yeah right. I would not be surprised it our tyrannical and dictatorial EMPLOYEE Justin Trudeau has his fingers in this pie as well. Again just my opinion.

The "tap" is actually called a "spigot" here in Canada. The method of piping it in was groundbreaking back in 1981 when I first seen it. The biggest problem with it was the wildlife like squirrels. Squirrels love our sap too and they often wait for a air bubble in the pipe to see if the sap if flowing then they chew a hole and drink the sap. Farmers try to avoid breakage by painting a "cocktail" of spices and hot peppers to detour the animals from biting it. Some use plastics you can't see though so they can't find bubbles.

Aunt Jamima, which was rebranded, used to have very end of season after the trees started budding, originally it was like 10% then it dropped down to 1% over the span of about 20 years because they just quit adding it. The syrup is dark and bitter, and they used to include that as their 'maple' syrup then balanced it off with molasses and then corn syrup and sugar. But They outlawed the use of the chemical that kept the hole in the tree open for like 8 weeks and now the holes in the trees are open for only like 4 weeks, so producers can't make that much syrup.

Any real crook wants a profitable score, and doesn't care about style points. The hardest and most important thing about stealing anything is finding a buyer. With maple syrup, there are buyers in abundance who ask no questions. A few years ago some daring teenagers walked into an exclusive watch store near me and smashed the display cases with hammers, stealing over $100,000 worth of fine watches. They were caught in a matter of days because they couldn't find a way to sell them.
@ParadigmUnkn0wn2 жыл бұрын
It's a generic product that's virtually impossible to trace and with a broad market. As @alkh3myst said, watches/jewelry and even things like electronics are serialized and are oftentimes traced quite closely while they're moving through distribution channels. Gold and silver can be melted down, but diamonds are serialized and certificated. Anything like designer items (e.g. Gucci handbag) sold outside authorized retail channels is going to be assumed to be a forgery, so it's hardly worth stealing. If you have the logistical capability to move bulk commodities, then stealing them is actually a genius strategy. Seeing the tapped syrup lines here reminded me of how Nigeria has an ongoing problem with people tapping oil pipelines. They've gone so far as to setup entire refineries operating on illegally tapped crude oil pipelines.

In each time you end up with the same amount of money by the end of the season. I don't even need to finish my degree on Financials to know that, they teach us that at high school, the price is made from the product availability and the product demand. You put both of them to a graph and since they are always in opposite direction in the intersection point you have the price.
