Me too, in 2012. The Uyuni salt flat/ Salar de Uyuni is an absolutely captivating place. Also, for those who go these, do not miss the Cementerio de Trenes/ Train Cementary in Uyuni. Countless of old steam locomotives etc. are rusting there, incl. the last train robbed by Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. For more on them, travel to Tupiza in the South.

They will never get sick from anything! In Puerto Rico, we have a beach that is surrounded by salt flats and when you get sick, you go to that particular beach and you’re perfectly find the very next day. The natural iodine in the air, and the pristine waters are enough to make you relaxed and happy. There’s nothing dirty about it. My favorite place on the island.

Have you had a chance to visit? 😍
@larsrons7937Ай бұрын
@@BBCEarthExplore I did, in 2012. Salar de Uyuni was a most captivating place, the most surrealistic place I've experienced, possibly rivaled by the Salvador Dalí desert down in the Eduardo Avaroa national parc (S-W Bolivia). Recommendation: If you return to Bolivia, do go to "Toro Toro" village & national parc in Potosí (take truck or bus from Cochabamba). The area is littered with dinosaur tracks of all shapes and sizes, the largest one can hide inside. At one spot can be seen tracks of slow plant eater dinosaurs slipping in the mud when climbing up from a stream, and the tracks of a large carnivour in pursuit. Dry mountains in all possible colours, and suddenly a small mountain/ hill consisting solely of fossilised clams and corals. The area gives the feeling of being back in prehistoric times, and you could encounter a dinosaur any moment behind the next hill. At Toro Toro don't miss the impressive "Umajalanta" cave with stalactites and stalagmites in all shapes and colours. Today there are tourist tours to visit the cave entering a few hundred meters. But you as BBC, if he's still around ask for "Mario", local cave explorer and the one who originally started exploring the cave 4-5 decades ago. I first visited Umajalanta cave in 1990. Unfortunately Mario wasn't in town right then, so I entered with two other locals. We only entered a few hundred meters, about the tourist circuit of today, yet nearly got stuck down in a very narrow tunnel. I had to climb out lying on my back, feet upwards, for about 30 meters to get out. At the time (1990) Mario and a group of French cave experts had just explored the cave system up to 3.5 km from the entrance. Now they've explored over 7 km, and expect to conclude (?), that the stream inside the cave probably exits in a nearby canyon, falling into the river below. The cave is very impressive. Stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes, sizes and colours. Large halls and narrow, winding tunnels, slippery surfaces. I've been to a few other stalactite caves, but not even on photo seen a place like this. There's also a small river with a sandy beach. You can have a swim if the water isn't too cold. Small ponds and lakes thyat occasionally get filled up again when parts of the cave is flooded from much rain. The fish down there don't have eyes, instead they have antennas. There should be white and black types, I've only seen the white one. When I returned to Toro Toro in 2012 I luckily found Mario and entered the Umajalanta cave with him, and we left the normal tourist circuit (hush hush, don't tell anyone). We went deeper and deeper, and got as far as 3.5 km into the cave system, as far as had just been explored before my first visit in 1990. In the sand on the floor I spotted some footprints. Mario's footprints from ten years earlier. If the spot hasn't been flooded since 2012, now my footprints are there too. I hope this story can be inspiration for exploring Toro Toro, and should you get there, and encounter Mario the cave explorer, do greet him from the Dane who ventured deep into Umajalanta cave with him in 2012. And if he still has it, do see if you can join for a ride in his old "Willys" truck - does he still drive with open carburator?
