Amazing trip, Chai. The ticket price is indeed exorbitant but the government use some of the money for temple preservation and reconstruction of other temples (Prambanan, Candi Sewu, etc.). Due to the limited budget, the government can reconstruct only 1 small temple, out of 220, every year. If you visit Prambanan temple, the process is still going on there.

I hope someday you will visit Dieng Plateau, (it's about 2 hours drive from borobudur) Because this plateau was the womb that gave birth to the temples' civilization in Java. Dieng, the Land of Gods, not only boasts stunning cultural works, but also displays the darkest portraits of the worst temple looting committed by locals. If only the 400 temples were still there, plus the stunning natural panorama of Dieng, I wouldn't be surprised if Dieng temple complex became much more famous than Borobudur, Prambanan, or even Angkor wat. And perhaps, the heart of Java tourism today wouldn't be Jogja, but the Dieng Plateau. Because it will be an unrivaled cultural paradise, if the 400 temples still existed.

It's great to have such a knowledgeable guide when visiting these sites. I think the key concept of Buddhist teaching gets a bit muddled up in translations. Nirvana and Heaven is just one of them. Final goal in Buddhism is the release of Karma. There are no tickets to Heaven. Only self responsibility, and I find that agreeable.

Ada begitu banyak candi2 yg tersebar di pulau jawa, maupun di luar pulau jawa, terkhusus pulau jawa, byk candi2 yang sudah rusak atau hilang atau diambil/di curi beberapa bagian2 pentingnya di jaman dahulu saat penjajahan Belanda/Netherland, dan ada juga yang menduga bahwa ada niat merusak bangunan2 kuno di Indonesia untuk menghilangkan jejak peradaban Indonesia yang dahulu sudah maju.
