Everything You Need To Know When Visiting Borobudur Temple In Indonesia

Borobudur temple in Java Indonesia is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and one of the most ancient and iconic UNESCO heritage site in all of Indonesia. In this video we visit this incredible temple and share with you everything you need to know when planning a trip to Borobudur temple in Indonesia and what to expect when exploring the ancient structure. There are currently no sunrise tickets available and the temple does not open until 8am. There are 2 ticket types you can choose from:
Yard ticket - 387.5k / $25
This allows access to the yard to view the temple only.
Structure ticket - 455k / $29
This allows access to both the yard and to climb the temple. Tour guide and special shoes are included. Tours take 1 hour up the temple, your time slot can be chosen online when you buy.
You must book online in advance for this option before going, since there is a limit of 150 people per hour, up to 1200 people per day. You can book from a week to a day in advance. This also saves you time at the entry!

(There is a limited amount of structure tickets at the entry and they are sold on a first come first serve basis, this means you need to go very early which in our opinion isn’t worth the risk and could end up being a waste of time driving there if you don’t get one).
Other things to know:
Online travel agencies like Klook/ Get Your Guide/ Traveloka etc who sell tickets at cheaper prices have led to the park adding an extra charge at the gates for anyone who buys tickets with them, meaning you have to pay an extra $7 at the entry. Buying from these websites might not end up being cheaper with this fee added on, so keep that in mind.
There’s also dual tickets available for those of you who want to visit Borobudur as well as another site like Prambanan temple or Ratu Boko. This can save you around $5 rather than buying them separately, but this ticket is only valid with the yard access to Borobudur and does not include the structure ticket.

It is indeed quite expensive and this new regulation is intended to protect Borobudur Temple because before the new regulation was implemented, the damage caused by Borobudur was about 0.3 to 1 mm/year to its blocks.

Hey we visited Borobudur 34 years ago.. we were travelling from Jakarta to Bali by rail & bus with our just under 2 year old daughter.. it is one of the highlights of my travels.. I don't remember there being any people around or much of an entrance fee and no guides that I can remember... We had stopped off in Yogyakarta and made our way from there.. groovy times ha ha. ❤

I hope someday you will visit Dieng Plateau, Because this plateau was the womb that gave birth to the temples' civilization in Java. Dieng, the Land of Gods, not only boasts stunning cultural works, but also displays the darkest portraits of the worst temple looting committed by locals. If only the 400 temples were still there, plus the stunning natural panorama of Dieng, I wouldn't be surprised if Dieng temple complex became much more famous than Borobudur, Prambanan, or even Angkor wat. And perhaps, the heart of Java tourism today wouldn't be Jogja, but the Dieng Plateau. Because it will be an unrivaled cultural paradise, if the 400 temples still existed. So, of course, the looting of Dieng temples in the past was a big loss for our nation, and also for the locals who have now inherited them.

If you want to climb the structure you should buy online at least a day before since there is a limit of 200 people every hour to go up. there are a limited amount of tickets available on the day too but you would have to be there really early to hope to get one (it's first come first serve basis). Yard structure tickets can be bought in person or online though as they don't require booking in advance.

You definitely get more for your money going to Angkor Wat because there is a lot more to see and do and it's so big. I think it's good to go at least once to Borobudur as well though since it's so unique to this area, but it's a much shorter visit.

There's no temples in Java that were ever damaged by bomb. Most damage that happened was from volcanic eruptions and earthquake and most of the restorations are starting fairly recent. I don't know where are you get that impression from.
