The Olympics lookback rlly made me realize how fast the sport is getting. Us swim fans are so spoiled with some of the times we are getting that we are almost numb to its significance

You left out the most famous (infamous) example. At the 1972 Olympics, Tim McKee of the U.S. lost the 400 IM to Sweden's Gunnar Larsson by two one-thousandths of a second (0.002 seconds). There should have been dual gold medals awarded, but they only gave the gold to Larsson. There was a lot of controversy. The next year, FINA changed the rules, and from then on, races were timed to one-hundredths of a second, not one-thousandths.
