United States swimmer & Olympic Gold medalist Ryan Lochte set the World Record in the Men's 200m IM way back at the 2011 World Championships in 1:54.00.
Over 13 years later, that record still stands despite the many talented swimmers who contest this event every year. After 4 Olympics and 7 World Championships, 1:54 is still the standard of excellence in this event leaving just one simple question I ponder in this video... how?

Hi chat! Found I made a slight error on Marchand's splits from Paris. He was 24.72, 28.83, 32.36, and 28.15. Amazing that even THAT wasn't enough to clip 1:54.00 🤯

It really goes to show just how fast 27.5 is at the end of the 200 IM with as strong as a middle 100 as it takes for the world record.

This world record has really lasted through some historically talented athletes it's kind of insane. Weird how there's so many talented 400IMers who have put up like top 10 in history times, and yet many of them did not come within a second of this world record in the 200IM

Phelps came with a second, he went 1:54.66 in Rio

@jonathan040w I specifically didn't say all the talented 400IMers, but ya for 12 years it wad just Phelps and Lochte at 1:54

I've been thinking for a long time how impressive this record is. During Worlds when Leon broke the 400IM but not the 200IM is when I really truly appreciated how great 1:54.0 was.

You've fallen into the kyle sockwell trap. By insinuating that this record shouldve been broken by now, youve extended its lifetime by at least another year

It was seemingly weak because Phelps had gone so many 1:54-1:55s before it was done that we had become desensitized. If phelps didn't exist, though, by 2011 a 1:57 was still absolutely world class, and certainly a 1:56 was. Meaning 1:54.00 was just wild. Another somewhat tiny factor is that many, if not all, of the contending swimmers that have come near the record have had other more "important" races that same week. Perhaps it may take someone like Marchand to attempt this world record at a home meet, without any other races before it. To have tired legs at all before the 200 IM will definitely not yield great results. Having said that, though, Lochte also had plenty of other big races the week of his WR, so no excuses

Lochte can book his flight to SIngapore right now. Leon missed it by a fingernail in the La Defense wave pool. Athletes & swimming fans alike were robbed in Paris because orgainisers were more interested in increasing spectator seating over a fast pool. The World Champs next year will give you a great indication of how many world records should have been broken in Paris.

Is it just me or does it seem like the swimming world is slower without Michael and Lochte😢

Phelps and Lochte were anomalies in this event as their supersuit times were nearly matched by other swimmers' supersuit times in this event, but their technique was so good that they never really benefited (minor benefits, comparatively speaking) from the supersuits vs. the textile suits. The rest of the world has finally caught up. There are now a ton of 1:55s in this event and that didn't exist 10 years ago.
