The ANZAC spirit will endure. Lest we forget. This one hit close to home. My great great grandfather fell at Beersheba with the 4th light horse, coincidentally nicknamed "Frank" or "Frankie" by his family. Thank you Ack for writing this story, and thank you Agro for the beautiful reading.

Ex US Marine here. You Brits are either crazy or brave as hell, maybe a bit of both. Much respect, regardless. The last two bayonet charges known to history were both by a UK unit; the 1st Battalion Princess of Wales Royal Regiment. One was in the Iraq War, and the last was in Afghanistan. If I heard the story right, that last one had zero casualties, scared the Taliban so bad they just fled.

The Australian light horse was instrumental in winning the African campaign of world war one they where able to ride through the desert and break a stalemate though was shaping up to be a second trench warfare like in europe that is what Beersheba was they had to capture the wells in that city to sustain the push on top of that the men had fought at Gallipoli taken heavy losses and still they where instrumental in the campaign and far to often its forgotten that the Waler (the breed of horse) was just as instrumental since we had breed it to be one of the hardiest breeds A little bit of extra information for those who aren't as aware of why the Australian light horse is so reverent to Australia. Though call me petty I 2ish it was the second sixth division the rats of Trobruk that were summoned call it family pride. But I loved this piece anyway

Now one has to wonder, where on earth these soldiers fought. Their kit is very much that of the WWI Australian light horse that served in gallipoli (Those rather distinctive hats were born there, by the way), And given the casualties when they got involved... would not be surprised if the spirits somehow got stronger over time. Better question though. They gave him a lee enfield, one that remained after the fight. And carted him back via donkey that other people saw. Da fuck? How much of it was real? Is this some sorta mysterious stranger type situation? Whatever the case. He did them proud.

This reminds me hard of the Knight Phantom in WWII. I wish I had a source and could remember the details, but I read the story a long, long time ago. According to it, at one of the smaller battlefields in France, the Allies couldn't gain ground, but were charging again for another go, when a light suddenly shone behind them. And out of nowhere a mounted Frankish knight in full livery, armor, shield, bannered lance, the whole shebang, dressed in white and gold, just rode right through Allied lines from behind, leveled lance against the Germans, and spurred into a charge without a word to anyone. The Germans opened fire immediately, but the bullets seemed to do nothing, and as the Knight hit the German lines, there was a bright flash of light and he was gone. The flash blinded the German gunners, and even after they could see again their guns, every last one, had jammed. The Allies then charged and were finally able to take the field and rout the enemy trenches.
