As pointed out, a sapient Von Neumann swarm would possibly be preferable, if it wasn't psychotic or omnicidal. Since it would, in theory, understand what it was doing and be able to send commands amounting to "right, that world is inhabited, leave that one alone." Or otherwise be able to focus and direct its intelligence to minimize collateral damage.
