I thought it was great and Mark's words echo my own thoughts and feelings on the film. Jonathan Majors deserves more credit though as he utterly brilliant in this as the quirky best friend. It feels as much of his film as it does Jimmie Fails.

“Oddly seductive” is a pretty cohesive explanation. There is a sense throughout the film that there is something else developing or being worked on in the background (later found out to be Montgomery’s play). Withthat, when the individual pay off comes in the performance of his play and Jimmy eventually leaving on the boat, the release is definitely very sensual and leaves you with a bereft and almost hollow feeling. Empty like the house was.

Really wonderful, funny film that explores a political space w/ a light touch and focus on character. Fantastic soundtrack too- been humming it since I saw it. Definitely passed my biggest test for a first feature, in that it made me want to watch their second film!

Excellent review! An authentically human story, that is at once universal and uniquely San Franciscan. As a native, one learns to simultaneously love and hate the City. I only have love for this movie, however. I'm, of course, biased, but it's one of the best of the year and my personal favorite....

God I love this movie. Watched it last night and it’s still so alive with me this morning. Proof for why the corporate demigods and universities need to stop gatekeeping, leave off into the sunset with their dragons hoards, and let the kids and the poor and the working classes have the art again. I’m starving for art, America is starving for art. For relevant enlightening storytelling, not circle jerking from the same group of embarrassing clinging-to-youth-with-white-knuckles nostalgia blind narcissists. The lesson is right there in the film, blaring with the brass, and in the story of the film’s making, a rich white lord granting a bit of his eye and his grace on a person from the peasantry; a golden ticket to the candy factory; played up as a “feel good” backstory. The American Dream brought to you by Kickstarter and Brad Pitt. Glad it happened obviously. It shouldn’t be that way though. Look at this peek at what we’re missing; all of us, the artists, the would be artists, and the audiences. So we can line up with our credit cards for another dead electroplated Disney turd. And then they clap for each other at the ball, a social cause pin on their 80,000 costumes, passing trophies to each other and broadcasting it to the plebs. “And Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow” This film is such a rare gift.

Although it's a story of false hope, it's the only kind of hope this young man has, even though he knows it's false.

I mean... seriously?! It is not often I watch a film and spend most of it thinking 'Hmmm... shall I leave? It might get better.' It is fascinating to see all the glowing praise. This is either a) I am completely missing something and not understanding what people are saying when they say it's good. (Mark likes its 'tone' - quite ambiguous. Oh, and the fact that they pointed the camera at some nice scenery) Or, b) people think they 'should' like it. The cinema laughed a few times. But it wasn't a proper laugh. It was literally people saying the word 'Ha', as if to acknowledge 'Oh, yes, that bit is funny'. The plot... I mean... is there one? The point... Is it that people shouldn't have to work hard to buy a place like the rest of us, they should just insist that they deserve it, because they've decided they do? The characters... A gang who were covered in the usual 'I am hard' tattoos, but liked a hug, and spent the days hurling playground insults at each other. Huh? Oh, and the main pair - who gave them food?! I mean, they didn't bother indulging in anything as uninteresting as 'work' - too busy writing plays and painting someone else's house. And the acting... Oh God - grown men running around a house 'having fun' by shouting 'Weeee!!! Haha!!!!'. This seems to have been made for one reason - Brad 'Mr Nice Guy' (the last bad guy he played was in Kalifornia 25 years ago - come on Brad - you're trying too hard) Pitt thought he'd better lend this project his name so he could appear all art-housey and right-on. What a complete mess of a film. One for people who walk around art galleries for their once a year mandatory visit looking bored, because they want to identify as 'someone who appreciates art'.

@@thefaulkness Well said. This is not a hard film to grasp, it just comes down to whether you liked the tone or not. Michael seems to be criticising the film for not spoon-feeding him every second. Not everything needs explaining or needs to follow logic. Strong filmmaker's force you to think and come to your own conclusions.

For all its imagination and good intentions, the film is mired by its pretentious directorial style, the sanctimony of the lead character, and the didactic, simple-minded script.
