I've been feeling super conflicted about ordering. In the last few weeks, I've been ordering a lot to help support my favorite small businesses whose only way of staying afloat right now is through online orders (and yes, totally using buying as a coping mechanism for my anxiety) but I definitely feel guilty about our mail people having to expose themselves daily 😭I don't know how to find a balance of support my favorite artists/small businesses without potentially making this harder on mail workers.

Same. I am the only working at the moment due to my husbands job being shut down. I'm an independent consultant so my job depends on being able to order products and be able to ship them back out. I feel super conflicted bc this is our only means right now but I don't like that I am putting my mail lady at risk.

Just to mention. We have been extremely careful, we have only left our home twice in 3wks for essential needs so we ourselves have been careful, I just worry and am concerned for everyone's safety

i would consider anything that is needed to be shipped for your job an essential! i am worried about the people who sit at home and order cute clothes and nicknacks just because :(

i don't think there is a /right/ answer. i'm just ordering as little as possible. I think it is still okay to order things. I've gone to order things but have asked companies if they can hold off on shipping until things have possibly cleared. A lot of small businesses are usually ok with that!

I recommend buying gift cards for small businesses! If they don't offer one on their site, most of the time if you DM them or email them, they can email you an invoice!

we do need to support small businesses, and also our post offices. My family is in the trucking business. If no one is ordering anything, businesses won't need the truckers. But we also all need to do what we feel is right for ourselves, so order or not, it is a personal decision.

my parents work in delivery and it has caused a lot of stress and anxiety in our family. i don't think people will stop ordering, and there will always be people buying things. I'm just choosing not to order anything unless i need to and not putting people at risk over a book just because lol

I’m now ordering from Bookshop.org since you can select an independent bookshop and a portion of the proceeds go to them. I’ve chosen different bookshops to support and discovered some great lists on there.

I didn't plan on ordering any books but I broke down. I also figured I could actually get the GRE book and use this time to study. Going to kick that out of the way when I can actually take the test! ... I took all of my library items back. I didn't check for what my library's policy was for this time. No need to risk being held responsible for 20+ books (Though I doubt I would have been). Besides, plenty of books at home. Despite my recent buying binge.

I tell myself that I can't buy books unless I've read 3 books off my physical TBR. In the month of March, I was able to read 5 books and between Book Outlet and Amazon I bought 7 books! The book I'm most excited to read off that list is A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds.

I took my acrylics off. Laque Nail Bar posted a good tutorial on Instagram on how to remove them safely. You can check it out @laquenailbar although if you aren't ordering things online you may not be able to get the supplies unless you already have them or they sell them at the market you go to.

I think book orders probably lean on the safer side for delivery people who a) are taking precautions and b) have to be working whether you order or not. I did a Book Outlet order about a week ago, and laugh if you will but, I felt so anxious and overwhelmed that the idea that I was planning far ahead enough to read all those books felt like I had staked a claim to the world rolling on. It might roll on strangely, like one of the dystopian novels I tend to read, but.... And it gave me something to look forward to. We've been bringing our mail home and putting them in quarantine in the pick up for a few days (cause it's not like we're going anywhere in it) before opening them. Cardboard is one of the hardest things for the virus to live on. As for where I'm getting books to read while sheltering in place, uhm, ahem.... have you seen my shelves??? I have enough books to read here if the quarantine lasts decades. I also can access books from my library because I can call them and staff will set up a time to check them out for patrons and leave them on a table in the front of the building. Again, I quarantine them between picking them up and reading them. Although the only books and videos I've gotten from them were several that I was on a waiting list for. I also have an ebook lending library and books on my Kindle I've purchased but haven't read yet. So, finding books is not in my list of quarantine issues. My problem was I had trouble reading, my brain just couldn't settle, but I seem to have gotten past that, whew! I'm really loving the ebook from my lending library I'm reading at the moment, Sorcery of Thorns. I was expecting something that was light and entertaining but I'm finding it really page turning! Sorry to ramble on so long - you can have your life back now. Heh heh.

I feel the same way, I really want to order Crescend City and read it but I feel it is unnecesary at the moment. My country has been in lockdown for a month so I didn't got the chance to buy it when it was relesead. I keep seeing booktubers talking about all the books that they are ordering and I'm a little scared of the lack of empathy some pople have honestly, it's like they have like a thousand unread books on their shelves, I'm sure they can find something to read during this time.

Powell's in Portland, Oregon is closed temp. I dont live there but I order books. Barns and Nobel closed about 2 thirds of there stores, I think for good
@FaeryLaume4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Powell's sent out a long post saying they weren't sure if they would survive the shut down. Booklovers have responded and done a lot of ordering. I live close enough to visit in person a handful of times every year and although I know there are greater issues in the world than a bookstore, the idea of a world without Powell's quite honestly was a huge reality punch for me.

I'm wondering if the Pirate Queen was inspired by the real Pirate Queen Ching Shih :) Yes, that with ordering is hard. I totally get why you do it. Over here - Bulgaria, some of the publishers (i can think of one) and media are posting in Instagram etc. to encourage us to buy so that the publishers/bookstores can survive the situation successfully. Since the quarantine I had only one order, but *sigh* I'm thinking of making one from one of my fav. publishers to support them.

Paper Faerie chain of gold doesn’t follow lady midnight story line. So that isn’t needed in order to read chain of gold, it follows after the infernal devices.
