The rich Roman city of Pompeii is wiped off the map, buried under a rain of pumice. Several thousand of its inhabitants perished in a long and painful agony. Less than ten kilometers away, the small aristocratic town of Herculaneum is buried under thirty meters of volcanic mud. Long forgotten, it only came back to light at the beginning of the 18th century. In two hundred years, his excavations have only revealed the remains of thirty-two bodies. What was the fate of Herculaneum and its inhabitants? So far we have no answer. The recent discovery of the skeletons of three hundred individuals has clarified these mysteries.
