The PG-13 rating wasn't created until 1984, and this is the awards show for the 1987 movies... It is not even worth remarking that 'This is the first PG-13 to win best picture!" It would have happend eventually no matter what.

Eddie didn't have to wait that long, thankfully. I guess the Oscars started to come around because in 1990, Denzel won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Glory and Morgan Freeman won Best Actor for Driving Miss Daisy.

Nah..."On Golden Pond" was great but it came after a streak of two family dramas winning Best Picture ("Kramer" and "Ordinary People") so it didn't bring anything fresh or impacting like "Chariots of Fire" did... "Reds" was epic but ask yourself which one was more memorable on the long term? "Chariots" or "Reds", give me an iconic moment from both, which one is the most memorable? "Raiders" was the closest contender but I'm glad "Chariots" won ... (I agree with the others by the way)

Reds was by far better but it was against the little engine that could, Chariots. Different movies but David vs Goliath syndrome all of the time. Ordinary People vs Raging Bull, Fargo vs The English Patient, The Hurt Locker vs Avatar. Sometimes my fave wins, The Last Emperor. Sometimes it does not. Its a crap shoot. Its a rarity that something or someone wins because of the art of it All and not just plain ole Marketing and/or Campaigning.

My friend whilst Out of Africa was good but didn't deserve it, Chariots of Fire is a whole different ball game. It did deserve Best Picture because if you look at the techniques employed in that film such as cinematography, music, sound etc.. it is truly groundbreaking and it means a lot to my country. If the Academy wants to know what is missing from their ceremonies these days is Oscar melodies that once used to play at the end credits as it is doing in this clip. When was the last time? 2015 when Birdman won Best Picture? Of the melodies, that closing piece hung on the longest. The others, like the one that used to play during Best Picture presentation, have not been heard since 2008 when No Country For Old Men won. That music producers or the Academy seems to leave out these days, I think created by Bill Conti, was the magic of the Academy. No magic, no Oscars. No magic? Who cares? Trust me on this one. I have a sick intuition about these things. Bring back Conti's music and the magic will bring back the Oscar fans.
