In the mountains of the southeast Vietnam, Ma Bio, a Chu Ru woman, is one the few people who plays the gong, an ancestral drum considered an Oral Masterpiece of Human Heritage by Unesco. She teaches the gong to the young generation of her village.
Ma Bio is worried because her set of gongs are old and pierced, and she knows she has to travel far to get new ones. Accompanied by her niece MaLuhin, she leaves on 600 km journey across the mountains and countryside to meet the last gong makers of Vietnam, possessors of a unique know-how.
Their first stop is in Danang, near the coast, where the two women watch the confection of a gong with great emotion. From cast iron to forge, each gesture has to be very precise and guided by the sound. Their journey will then take them to Pearl Mountain, where Mr. Kong will teach them the difficult art of tuning the instrument. They will end their trip in the Bahnar region where they will participate in a celebration and dance to the magical sound and rhythm of the gongs.

This video should have been narrated to capture the audience better. The Vietnamese have amazing talent & craftsmanship, but I don’t like how they do things so unsafe and dangerously. I mean, working with metal and hot coals with no gloves or eye protection is a recipe for disaster. Seeing the old man tell the grandson put out the coal with water and a small broom whilst it was pouring out hot as, made my hair stand up. The kid was trying to move further away from the heat and hot coals. Very bad unsafe practices.

HOW MUCH OF THAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY TAKE BEFORE YOU'D BE GONGING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL. I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE ABOUT THE LARGE GONG SHOW TYPE GONGS NOT POTS & PANS GONGS . 😂 🤣 😂

Yup. It's very convenient to hide ignorance with arrogance. Mind you these same kind of gongs are prized in a region about 1000kms west across the sea from the setting of the video you are watching. Totally a different culture. Try searching "gangsa ensemble cordillera" as a cure.
