I love my vq37 in my g37. I was able to do a 4000+ mile road trip across the US without a single hiccup and I daily drive tf out of it

LOL being moreso sarcastic but this does confirm my personal opinion that despite owning one and actually still liking it VQ35DE ENGINES are not long term reliable AT ALL, are way overpriced used and new parts are extremely inflated , ALONG WITH ONCE HITING THE 500 HP MARK THEY LACK PRACTICALLY 100 lb ft of TORQUE vs HORSEPOWER and by 700 HORSEPOWER their TORQUE IS OVER ....YES... FREAK'N OVER 150 LB FT BEHIND making them extremely rare and odd in a BAD WAY ... still like em but they KINDA FUCKING SUCK BRO... (S)

It’s exciting when you must have faith in a vehicle to get you where you are going when you are practically driving across the entire North America. It’s exciting once the car finishes the job and delivers despite what other people may have thought, I’ve been there a few times. In my experience, I use to buy G35’s at auction, I use to buy & and sell, drive, many different cars. The Infiniti’s were higher mileage & they were all reliable. I drove an 08 G35X sedan for a while & it was pleasurable. Never had an issue with the car, it had 185k miles on it when I got it for 5k or so, it was a nice car & ran strong, shifted just as aggressive as it’s supposed to, the awd still launched it to 60 in about 5 seconds. It ended up being a good buy, that car.

Great breakdown! One flaw with this engine is definitely the lack of an oil cooler. They have a tendency to overheat during hot temperature and motivated driving.

I find that interesting since the older G35 had oil coolers. It probably would bolt on the oil filter housing if you wanted to add one anyway.

The Infiniti all came with an oil cooler as did later generation 370z, albeit small ones that are a bit lacking for track duty. But yeah they shipped without one on the Nissan side for the first few years oddly enough.

I installed an oil pressure gauge on my 370, so if pressure is lost you have a much quicker way of knowing. Otherwise replacing the gallery gaskets themselves with stronger ones and better hardware is the best way, albeit expensive in labor.

I think Nissan changed their galley gaskets to a steel reinforced design in 2015 I believe? Before that they were all a multi-layered paper gasket or something like that. The gaskets themselves usually held up, but with the high pressure oil running through the galleys, the bolts would tend to back off and then the paper gaskets would blow out without the clamping force of the bolts anymore, which would lead to low oil pressure especially at idle. I've changed the galley gaskets in my Frontier and 350Z with EPS Tuning gaskets (they call them gallery gaskets) and they seem much better designed with great instructions on how to put them on so they shouldn't ever fail or have the hardware back out on you

@@mattschlatter4999 2012. So 2012-13 G's are good to go. My 07 HR is still rocking normal oil pressures at idle both cold & warm, no gallery gasket job to do yet. But it'll come... only 64K on the clock.

This is the best breakdown of this motor that I've seen. From how important the gallery gasket is. The water pump and timing chain. I like how you point out the impotence of maintaining the oil and temp on these engines. I love my 08 G37. They are power platforms. Truly. I just replaced everything on the front of my engine because added some mods and got tuned with uprev. I think my next investment thanks to you will be the Mishimoto oil cooler kit for around $600. If you know your engines weaknesses because they all have a few but, you can fix and improve them. Thanks to videos like this one. Thanks man!!

Great engine, very reliable. Most of the heat issues are as a result of the VVEL valvetrain, it generates alot of heat. These engines are specd for 5w30 oil. Its recommended to run a european spec oil for better thermal control. I have been running 0w40 Mobil 1 euro spec oil in my VQ37 Q50 since new and its never had any issues.

Run the same oil in my g37 as well. There is a noticeable difference in valve tick noise between this and 5w30, with the 0w40 being much quieter to non-existent. I will say, the slightly heavier 40 (granted, the Mobil euro 0w40 runs much closed to a 30 weight) causes a bit more engine drag after ~1000 miles than the 30 weight does after the same mileage.

Very informative video! Thanks! The VQ30DE-K engines found in 2000-2001 Maxima and Infiniti I30’s are probably the last good engines from Nissan. No oil pressure issues, no oil burning, no drama, just good solid engines that are known to last well into the 300K mile range with just regular oil changes.

I have a 370Z and this engine played a huge part in my decision to buy the car. I can hold the motor at 6,500 RPM in 4th gear and it doesn't feel strained at all, just completely at ease and making peak power because of the excellent VVT system. If I did that in my Grand Prix I would probably boil the fluid in the torque converter inside of a minute lol.

2014 Q60 with 170,000 on it. Mobile 1full synthetic since the first oil change using OEM filters. Amazing car, still breaks the tires lose punching it over cross walk paint through a yellow light!

With some mods (Stillen dual intakes, Fast Intentions resonated high-flow cats, and a tune by Specialty Z) my 370Z is at 362hp. Also added a Setrab oil cooler since I live in Florida and drive it hard. Running Redline 5W-40. Best V6 ever.

On the Hr and Vhr motors oil and coolant will not mix if there was a water pump leak, there is a weep hole that allows the coolant to drip down the side of the block and lets it leak down right above the oil pan on the driver side ive seen it many times lol i have changed water pumps on hr’s vhr’s quite a bit now and never seen oil and coolant mix

Very good video. Mostly accurate except for saying they are known for burning oil. The old VQ35de was known for burning oil, the VQ35HR and VQ37VHR fixed that problem. I own both variants and my 2008 VQ35HR has 200,000 miles and still does not use a drop in 6k oil changes. The oil is still clean every 6k too!

interested on seeing nissan’s VK series truck engines, I’ve heard they are based on the VQ but with two more cylinders, seen a lot of very high mileage Titans so they seem pretty durable as a workhorse

The trucks seem good honestly. I work as a GM tech but work on everything except for planes (yes that includes boats, atvs, heavy duty) at the shop. There’s a few Nissans I work on and it’s usually just seals, joints and maintenance. If I was in the market for a foreign market truck I’d honestly pick a Nissan Titan over a Tundra and Tacoma.

let alone the knock sensor design flaw, the QR25DE (07-12 Sentra ser spec v) is a pretty good one too.... mine has 220 000 km. Still working fine even during our brutal winter seasons here in Quebec, Canada.

Early versions of this engine were not known for their reliability. Some of those problems were not the engine's fault, such as the engine grenading after sucking in the faulty catalytic converter material. This engine has a stroke that is crazy long too compared with it's bore yet Nissan used it in some "performance" oriented applications. Strange.

I was trying to figure out why the vvl system was so complicated until you pointed out it was infinitely adjustable, then it clicked and I realized what a smart design it was. Side note, is a new set of bearings all this engine would need to run again?

VVL was definitely a head scratcher for me trying to figure it out when I had it all apart! Very smart system 👍 Bearings could get this engine back together but you'd want to get the crankshaft polished to make sure it's not damaged and of course a new set of seals, rings, guides, bolts etc. Once it's apart it's only worth putting back together properly

I have a 2010 G37X w 212k miles. Switched to 3k OCI with marvel mystery oil during the last 500. Runs very smooth. 0w-40 in winter 5w-40 in summer. Need to do the gallery gaskets soon owner before me never did them.

Nothing negative but one small suggestion when using the breaker car, make sure you apply force at exactly 90 degrees or perpendicular, as it does become harder when you try to turn the bar from an angle. It might or might not change whether or not you would be able to break the bolt loose, but you do lose or need to use more torque the farther you are from 90 degrees

My 2019 370Z is hitting 42K miles and the engine uses no oil, as indicated on the dipstick, between my 3K mile oil changes. I have used the recommended Nissan ester oil since the beginning and change it every 3K miles. I did break the engine in very carefully and slowly, taking about 15K miles before it was fully broken in. Until that point, the engine used about 3 to 4 oz of oil during the 3K mile oil change interval. I don't use the OEM size filter that Nissan uses for this engine, instead using the filter from the VK56 engine. This filter is identical to the 370Z filter, except that it is about 50% taller. This increased filtration area results in about a 3 psi reduction in the oil pressure drop going through the filter, by my estimation of flow calculations. The particular filter I use is the Fram Ultra Synthetic, which supposedly filters about 98.6% of particles greater than 10 microns and about 99+% of particles greater than 20 microns. Abrasive dirt particles in the 10 to 20 micron(25.4 micron = 0.001") range are supposedly the most damaging to engine bearings and journal surfaces. When I cold start he engine I let the engine idle for about 5 minutes, until the coolant temp gets up to normal. After I drive away I keep the revs from exceeding 2K rpm until the oil temp hits 180⁰F. The engine runs quietly and smoothly, with practically no soot build up on the inside of the exhaust tips. At my 30K service trip I had one of the spark plugs pulled and dropped a borescope into the cylinder to inspect the piston top and the cylinder wall. The spark plug(iridium tip) was clean with hardly any electrode wear and the piston top had no deposits, other than a slight darkening of the original bright metal finish of the aluminum. The cylinder bore had no scratches nor scuffs and the crosshatch finish hone pattern was clearly visible. From my experience, this engine will run reliably for many years if given good maintenance and not abused.

You really shouldn't let the engine idle from cold for that long. You aren't doing it any favors extending the warmup of the oil. Ideally, you should be turning it on, waiting for the idle revs to reach ~1000-1100 rpms/when the initial cold start procedure is finished (when the exhaust quiets down after purposefully running rich), and then begin to drive, staying under 3k rpms until operating temp is reach. It's a horrible myth that letting your car idle until fully warm up is a good idea.

wow, you baby the car too much. I drove the living piss out of the my 2003 G35 since it had about 5k miles on it. To this day I still drive it hard but not every day anymore. It is at 290k miles without any issues. on my 2012 g37 I also drive it hard every single day, it's at 122k miles - no issues either. You don't need to idle it for 5 minutes. It's actually not good for the engine.

I have a 07 G35 with the VQ35HR engine and it's a great engine if it's taken care of. I've recently did the updated oil gallery gaskets (original gaskets were not blown out) and water pump, mainly the water pump because it started to leak through the pisshole and looking at it and comparing it to my old Maxima DE engine, this one is a nice design with too much bulletproofing. I was looking at newer G37s but after seeing the VQ37VHR engine and the unnecessary complexity that was added to it, I quickly swayed away from it. Only 24HP and less than 10TQ gain over millions of dollars in research..

So the reason why rod bearings are usually the first thing to go is because the crankshaft is spinning in the main journals it's not really subjected to any up or down linear force so whenever you run out of oil the rods are still getting pushed into the crank by the force of combustion which causes damage to the rod bearings faster than that of the main bearings

I have this engine in a '17 qx50....and Id like to keep it running as long as possible. I am currently running spec oil and bg MOA. Is that good or bad? Ive read in the comments 0w40 euro spec is the better option. a lil bit of guidance would be greatly appreciated. AWESOME VIDEO btw...THANK YOU!

@@speedkar99 the oil starvation is pure lack of maintenance and nothing to do with the engine unless it’s caused by the gallery gaskets. My best friend has a g37 with 180k and it burns like 1/8 of a quart between 5k mile oil changes.

@@trizkial7592 ...and if you get a 2012-and-up VQ37VHR with redesigned gallery gaskets, it's damn near-bulletproof. Change the 5W30 oil at every 5K miles, that's it. Mine has 116K on it and is 10 years old, doesn't burn a drop and I've had it since Oct 2016.

Awesome class Professor, "so crusty"😂. my 2017 QX50 hasn't burned oil at all at 57k miles. Hoping it stays that way cause I love this engine. 1st noteworthy repair just a cracked mount.

Personally noticed it is highly dependent on what oil is used. Newer Pennzoil 5w30 seems to burn/blow-by quite a lot (the VQ isn't alone in this) whereas Mobil 0w40 doesn't have the same issue, from my experience.

3:03 there is a big connector right under your hand. I found the wire harness disconnected from it when I was replacing my knock sensors. Any idea what it is or what it's for?

Sir can I have the bottom half for a 350z hr turbo build. The newer z unfortunately went with a lower displacement engine. Oppps spun bearing. I prefer the HR head with control of both cams.

Got an off-topic question for you. Would you have an opinion on what is the preferred gasoline for the 3.0L V6 1MZ-FE? My 2000 Camry manufacturer's manual says: "1MZ−FE engine: Unleaded gasoline, Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating of 91(Research Octane Number 96) or higher is recommended." Would you suggest "premium unleaded", especially for shorter, city-street commutes? I want to use Chevron's Supreme Plus with Techron. Thanks speedkar99.

87 works fine with the 1MZ. Using 91 isn't going to make it faster or last longer. You'll get better fuel economy but not enough to justify the difference in fuel price.

i remember reading a Solara forum post where one guy was talking about how the knock sensors were overly sensitive on the 1MZs and as a result almost 90% of the time they were running on very very retarded timing, he did a little practical experiment where he filled his solara with 94 octane and threw in off the shelf some octane booster and a fee miles of driving later the car woke up and had GOBS of response and power

@@lancecooper4646 the vq37 is longitudinally mounted it’s a RWD platform…. Nor is any of the more complex designs a know issue with the platform. Been on sale for nearly 15 years these engines are pretty dang solid . Lol

E-Torx, ran into those bolts on a MR18DE I needed the torque converter from (engine seized). Wasn't anything a 13mm and a hammer couldn't handle

I have one with 180k miles, no leaks, no oil consumption .I always use good fully synthetic oil and add 6 quarts instead of 5.

@@expofcam I use large oil filter from a v8 and extra oil. You should listen to experienced owners, not car manufacturer . For example all Nissan dealerships now using 0w20 oil on older engines , just for lower emmisions and slowly killing peoples cars.

Valvetronic has been reliable for a long time now & even the early Valvetronic issues I’d wager were more due to BMW’s ridiculous 15k mile oil change interval rather than the system itself.

@@CadexLaw eh, vvel has its fair share of issues as well. But the technology is in a lot of nissan vehicles and very seldom I see a vvel catastrophic failure. I guess we're speaking on personal experiences so none of this really matters. Maybe valvetronic is good

It’s a fantastic motor has some teething issues with turbo seals that need to be sorted out but yeah engine bay is very tight. Lol

@@speedkar99 it actually makes about 30 more wheel horse power and 50ft lbs more torque even in the 300hp trim. The 400hp version is closer to 100ho and torque over the old VQ37. Nissan just downplayed the numbers on the new motor. It’s more complex but that’s typical of modern engines and they don’t overdue but is very cramped engine bay no question. XD

@@infinitibossauto You can’t just slap a turbo on an engine that wasn’t designed for it from the factory and achieve good reliability, the fuel system, durability and supporting components all need to be changed which isn’t cheap. The VQ platform is also nearly 30 years old and needed to be replaced from both a technology stand point and emissions stand points. They took what they learned with the vq37 and Vr38 and mass produced a capable twin turbo engine.

But overall it’s a very good engine. I love my G37 and enjoy starting the engine every time and driving it. I can say the same for many cars.
