MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME: I think if this game would have come out when it was suppose to, it could have been a masterpiece. But now? It still a good and enjoyable game, but there's something lacking. In many ways it feels like the ultimate inidie game. We're so use to games like Limbo, Bound and Inside being the standard for puzzle platformers now, that it's easy to forget how well ICO did it 15 years ago. The controls are simple, and the game doesn't hold your hand through anything. It's up to you to figure it all out, and find the way forward through your own intuition. All that is fun, but where it gets frustrating is the controls. The young boy you play as feels clunky and even unresponsive at times. He seems to have only two speeds: softly treading and wildly moving forward. Perhaps that's what the developers were going for; to make the boy as clumsy as a real young boy woud be. But the controls cause a lot of unintentional movements and falls. Trico can be just as frustrating. There were times were I was trying to get him into a position to get through a puzzle but he just wouldn't do it, and it made me decide that that must not be the right way. Only after 20 minutes of trying to find a different path did Trico finally go to the original positiong I was looking for. All these frustrations detract from the overall experience. But that's not to say the game is bad. When it's working, it feels great. The storytelling is extremely subtle. It's told through the interactions and gameplay, as opposed to bombarding you with cutscenes. There are some great emotional moments in the game that will resonate with players. The environmental puzzles are creative and satisfying. The game is also lengthy, it'll take people somewhere between 10-12 hours to beat. Graphics don't make a game, but it is worth noting that the graphics aren't top notch. The color looks washed out. And no matter what we did with the in-game screen brightness, the color wouldn't change. It's a strage contrast as it feels they went with a realstic look to Trico and a more anime style with the boy. Trico looks amazing though. His fur animation is excellent. But again, the graphics is worth noting since that was one of the big buzz factors when it was first revealed in 2007. It seems to have been downgraded since then. All in all, if you like puzzle platformers, it's definitely a game worth playing. The story is excellent if you allow yourself to be immersed int he world. At a $60 price point, it's not for everyone. If it were a $40 or even $50 game I would give the game an 8 or and 8.5 for the value, but at full price, I give this game a 7.5/10

Fricken cried twice. Really wanted a happier ending but honestly I'll take what I got. Great story. For those that complain about how little information it gives, you should try looking a little deeper into it. The story is good not because everything is given to you, but because it makes you think about the plot and the characters more, further pulling you into the world and the story inside it. That's just my opinion on the game since it is completely story driven.

controls and character movement are extremely clunky, unresponsive, and stressful, but other than that the game is flawless. they could easily fix the main problem by just uploading a patch to the controls to make them tighter and basically keep the player from sliding around constantly. also if the player could climb on trico faster, it would clear up a lot of the frustration. much of the difficulty of this game is caused by the poor controls, it's pretty much artificial difficulty and not even intended by the developers. what i mean is, if you ever actually see the game over screen in this game it's most likely because the character moved in a direction you did not intend him to, or because the character climbs on trico so slowly. that at least is realistic, though also really aggravating. but the problem with the controls is totally unnecessary, it's not just a side effect of trying to make the character motion realistic, because lots of games have realistic animation without such wonky controls. it's really tedious when you intend to move in one direction and the controls move you in another, because even if it doesn't kill you, it will force you to undo the accidental movement and then redo what you intended. you just waste a huge amount of time on accidental movements which are totally unrealistic. in real life, if i want to walk to the left there is not even the most minute chance that i'm going to somehow walk to the right. realistic motion would mean realistic acceleration and deceleration, sure, and i am willing to sacrifice the pleasant but unrealistic motion in games with very little acceleration. the controls always feel tighter in a game like skyrim or dark souls where the character moves almost like he's on train tracks, but obviously it's not very realistic so the last guardian shouldn't imitate it. but forget deceleration and acceleration, humans can turn on a dime because it only means rotating a single leg, about a single axis. if i want to run forward and turn right, i can do that a lot faster and with far fewer mistakes than if i was controlling the boy in the last guardian. he hurtles forward and slides around, as if he's not running on legs but on rickety wheels. like i said, this does not ruin the game. even if they never make any adjustments to the controls it's still an amazing game, because we can't judge it purely on its controls or animation. a game is made up of so many things, this one's got a great plot, a strong and emotional narrative, and an incredible atmosphere which can't even be summarized. but the game could be made totally perfect if they would just do a patch or some kind of hotfix which maybe even gives the player an optional setting to make the controls less wobbly and sluggish. so if you prefer, you can sacrifice a bit of the pseudo-realism for less frustration and a smoother-feeling experience. and if you don't, then keep it the way you want. it's not like a PVP game where we could ruin the game's fairness/balance by giving some players different controls or animations from other players.

I really wasn't expecting such a happy ending. I was ready for heartbreak. When they returned to the village, I was bracing to see spears fly at Trico, with sad music, sad animal cries, and sad little boy waking up to a dead bird-dog buddy...I'm so fucking happy that's not the case. Trico liiiiiiiiives! And is that a little Trico jr. at the end? :'D But there are questions: What is the magical ball thing that was controlling all the tricos, and why was it collecting human bodies? Reminds me of the queen in Ico, who collects horned children. What about the tomb/sarcophagus near the beginning of the game? I imagine the magic ball is the mind or consciousness of whoever this dead person is.

Very touching and beautiful game. I'm sort of mad at myself for not playing this myself. This is a game that has to be played, and not watched imo. As usual though, you captured the mood the best you could. It would be like watching a Journey game movie. Just not the same.

Err, from all accounts, I've heard it can be a frustrating game. You spend more time trying to get Trico to do a simple task than you do making progress. I suppose there's some level of satisfaction you get from getting what basically amounts to an animal to perform a task, but for me, that'd get frustrating fast. Story's great, but I don't really intend to play the game. Maybe I'll get it and play it someday if I catch it on sale. It depends.

The blue orb was worshipped as a god, the people made a pact to use its energy, they built around the nest and created machines with this new power. But once it ran out the orb revealed that they had to sacrifice their own to get more energy. They fled, so the orb created these Trico to collect sacrifices to sate itself. Littering the nest with mirrors to keep them under control. But i bet it didn't account for lightning to be its downfall eh? ;)

Some thoughts if it isn't obvious yet: I think the boy is the Last Guardian of the title, seeing as there will be no more kidnappings, Trico isn't the last of its kind and the boy grew up but the mysterious marks didn't disappear. Also throughout the game the villagers or the old boy kept talking about "chosen ones", which could be said of the ones who get kidnapped or the ones that survive (seems unlikely there is any)...

This game is a masterpiece!...... It`s Grandeur way outstrips any technical issues that it may have. Even the difficult controls worked for me and could even be deliberate. The boy is after all only a child his legs and arms are not strong and the awkward controls mimic that so well. The pacing of the game and the way the development of the Boy/beast relationship and the eventual confidence that returns to Trico as he moves through the perilous pathways and crumbling towers, cement his final heroic deed into something profoundly moving. The like of which, I have never felt in any other game to date.

Besides everything else, this game illustrates a flexible, fleshy beak in a realistic fashion. I've seen them in cartoons plenty of times, but the critter's mouth actually looks like something that could work in real life. How is the story confusing, the boy had a special mark in the beginning showing the "beast" going to the tribes house area and taking the boy, the "beast" was struck by lightning and fell into the cave hence the beginning of the game, they journey to the very top, while also both are created a bond that is almost inseparable, the player or the audience that of which is us, learns that these animals were merely used as slaves for the precursors that created that place, at the end of the game you go to the very top and find out that the green pillar is the main beacon that controls these "beasts" the player destroys it freeing all the other "beasts" from the cutscene that was scene, it shows the "beasts" taking the bodies of the tribes people, maybe not from the same tribe that the boy was in, but either way the bodies that the "beasts" transported it to an alter that from the looks of it turns those people into those guards that you see, maybe that is just speculation that or they use the tribespeople as energy for the control beacon, in return the "beasts" get their snack or in other words for the animal its like drugs or think about it like catnip, The player destroys the main beacon that mind controls the "beasts" sets all the "beasts" free from the mind control and Trico sends the boy back to his village, after some time while the boy aged, Trico was happy living with a family. Please just take the time to read it, this may clarify some questions that you did have, if not, I can try to summarize it in a shorter style

Who built all of this and for what reason? Just to make some stoneguards and feed some animals? What purpose does that serve?
