Agree with your takes Chris! On stage 20 last year, Pog wanted the win to make up for his terrible day on La Loze, and Jonas didn't take a single pull, he had over 7 minute lead but still marked Pog as if he was 10 sec behind. They got caught by a bunch of other people and Pog had to win the sprint with an amazing leadout from Adam Yates. Nobody gifted Pog last year stage 20 as a consolation because he cracked spectacularly on La Loze and lost the tour by over 7 minutes. And that's fine. Then, Visma didn't hesitate to win the 3 grand tours last year. In La Vuelta they won 5 stages and went 1,2,3 in the GC, no apologies, no gifts, and that's all good. The thing that was not cool was Jonas and Roglic attacking Sepp, their own teammate!!, that's actually bad. Sepp Kuss saved his Vuelta thanks to Mikel Landa who was not even his teammate but pulled him on Angliru. Pog not gifting the stage today was not mean and not even revenge. It is a competition and if he is in the position to win he should try, as long as he is not attacking his teammate!

In the end Jonas could've took the Vuelta from Kuss but didn't and called off the attacking at the end. The only reason Kuss was in red was because of a breakaway the team put him into.

@@MarkTomeh Kuss can also argue that Jonas would not have won without his efforts. So, your story is one-sided and you also forget that Jonas rode away from the red jersey to close the gap to Roglic. He, like you, has an excuse for everything though. So, no problem.

I’m certain Pogacar went to bed thinking today would be a vacation ride through home roads, but Pogacar is someone who gets that itch to race the moment he sits in the saddle. I’m happy the day ended with another battle between the top riders. Pogacar came into the tour with otherworldly form backed by an incredible team, and he should reap all the rewards of his efforts. To those thinking that Pogacar should have gifted the stage to Jonas, let’s not forget that Jonas and Primoz had no problem putting their own teammate Sepp Kuss to the sword while he was leading the Vuelta. There are no expectations of gifts in professional sport, especially between opposing teams. Besides, I think the fact Pogacar and UAE gave no gifts this tour makes Carapaz’s KOM jersey feel much more satisfying.

chris i think you should watch the jumbo visma documentary on the vualta last year here on youtube. it cleared up that at first jonas was in favor of supporting thier podium positions butmainly roglic and the jombo visma director said that the plan was to battle it out. Therefore jonas knew that he would rather win the vuelta than let roglic take it. In jonas head he thought that when roglic attacked he needed to follow because he thought roglic was strong enough to both take his and kuss places on the podium.

TJVG is wrong in his comparison of running out the clock in a basketball game to giving a gift in the tour. The Tour is a multi-stage cumulatively timed event. Basketball is a discreet timed event. The events in the next basketball game will not change the outcome of the previous game. In the TDF, the win is only clinched at the of Stage 21.

Tadej and his super team have been simply out of this world. Unfortunately for Visma and the other teams, a perfect storm of talent, form, health, and revenge has literally destroyed the ambitions of almost all the teams this year. Chris, I know you said no gift, but did you catch that exchange between Phill and Bob on Peacock? Phill wanted Pog to gift the stage to Jonas. It was a laugh riot, with Phill dramatically proclaiming that Bob would eat his own tongue if that happened. I mean, talk about dedication to the bit! Regarding the trifecta, I say Pog should absolutely go for it. After all, how often do you get the chance to metaphorically feast on a Danish anchovy's lunch and then tell him to swim in water without salt? It's a golden opportunity! And just imagine the scene: after clinching the Vuelta, Pog casually strolls over with a shaker of salt, gleefully rubbing it into the Viking King's wounds. It's the stuff of legends-epic, salty legends.

The only time the yellow jersey would gift the stage win to another rider would be if the other rider would pull him and that would be necessary for him to secure yellow. But Pogacar had a comfortable lead here, he had no reason to pull and no reason to gift anything. I don't know servo expected otherwise. Jonas himself said he would have done the same.

In Jonas’s defense, it seemed like he attacked Sepp in the Vuelta because Primoz was going up the road. In at least one case, I do recall him _eventually_ sitting up and waiting for Sell. In any case, I agree with your conclusion: Tadej should not be handing out gifts to anybody. No one wants an ill-gotten stage win anyway. _That_ would be disrespectful. Looking forward to the time trial tomorrow. Hoping that Tadej lights it up. 🔥🔥
