SCOTT ON TAPE - Your Pop Culture Tour Guide

5 жыл бұрын

As a request to various viewers , I visit the last house of Layne Staley, the lead singer of Alice in Chains, where he sadly passed away on April 5, 2002. I explain the story behind his death and the days following including his funeral and why there is no gravesite. Tough video to do but I hope his many fans are able to somewhat pay their respects through this video.
/ scottontape
Opening song is Ellegy (How Will I?) By Jory Nash from the album New Blue Day.
Second song is untitled by me.
Layne Thomas Staley (born Layne Rutherford Staley, August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002) was an American musician known for his role as lead singer and co-songwriter of the rock band Alice in Chains. The band rose to international fame in the early 1990s during Seattle's grunge movement, and became known for Staley's distinct vocal style and tenor voice, as well as the harmonized vocals between him and guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell.
An informal memorial was held for Staley on the night of April 20, 2002 at the Seattle Center, which was attended by at least 100 fans and friends, including Alice in Chains bandmates Cantrell, Starr, Inez, Kinney and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. Staley's body was cremated and a private memorial service was held for him on April 28, 2002 on Bainbridge Island in Washington's Puget Sound. It was attended by Staley's family and friends, along with his Alice in Chains bandmates, the band's manager Susan Silver and her husband Chris Cornell, as well as other music personalities

Layne sang like an sorrowful angel and screamed like a vengeful demon. There are great singers and then there are singers that change lives. Chester Bennington, Layne & Chris Cornell are 3 singers I will never get over losing.

To add to the sadness of the scene, his mother has to see this, he was in no doubt in horrific condition after lying dead for 2 weeks. I met her in Seattle at a memorial and she is a strong and gracious woman. Layne’s final companion was his cat. It survived being alone those 2 weeks. I believe his cat was adopted by Jerry

@@dannylarry9408 I fed a Siamese feral cat named Sadie. Would have loved to take her home but she always had babies and I didn't want to take her away from them. By the time she introduced me to her litter she was pregnant again. I still feed her babies 3 generations later. They are with me. I rescued them after she was killed by a stray dog. I really loved her.

I can't help but wonder if Layne was even aware of what he meant to music and just how important he was. He wasn't just another vocalist. The unplugged performance, even though it's Mtv, was one of the best live performances in music history. Amazing talent. Thanks for the respectful presentation.

"Hey, Your weak will won't help her heal her heart. Hey, I'll bet it really eats you up." Layne was extremely open. The lyrics above are from Again. He didn't have the will to get clean and because he couldn't get clean, Demri continued to use drugs and ended up having heart disease. Her passing away completely tore him apart because he knew he had something to do with it.

Layne Staley's vocal range was amazing and could run rings around any other grunge singer, even near the end when he had no teeth and lisp, he could still kill the vocals on any song. During the MTV Unplugged he was deep in a heroin addiction, his liver was shot to hell. The Unplugged shows are heartbreaking to watch. By the time of the KISS shows in July, everyone could see something was up before he overdosed then. But at the MTV Unplugged, Layne was such a ghost of himself during that show. After that, it was a six-year long slow suicide. Layne's situation was tragic, but he never wanted his fans to follow in his footsteps, he wanted them to learn from his mistakes. How he died and how he was found haunts me when I think about it (and I didn't know him personally)

@Another stimulating comment its not that simple for the individual that is in that situation. To others it is clear what they need to do but the addict can't see it. You need to of been one to understand and come out the other side of it to see it to understand what it was like for him, otherwise you are talking about something that you don't know of.

He never glorified drugs, unlike many rock n roll stars and for that alone he deserves respect. It’s just terribly sad but the truth is he did say “you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped”. It was the same with Cobain with the record moguls treating them as cash cows and using guilt as means to get them into rehab. Susan Silver told Layne he was responsible for 40 people not getting paid while he was sick. By the time his girlfriend died he was only waiting on death I’m afraid.

You paid your respects very gracefully by showing us his home and telling us about his life and music. May his soul Rest In Peace. One thing that struck me was Layne’s birthday. He was born on the 22nd of August, the same day Sean and Denise were born years later. (Sean and his sister Denise were born on the same day, a few years apart). Thanks Scotty. I think a good start for folks to get a taste of Layne's vocals would be Nutshell, Rooster, or Wake up and River of Deceit off of the Mad Season album. Great video brother. I grew up on the Samammish plateau in Redmond Wa. The era of grunge was just beginning when I entered junior high. I could go on for hours about the impact this had on our group up there. Lost a good buddy In a car accident in 95. Don't follow was played at his funeral along with Nutshell. Jar of flies will forever be engraved into my memory. Once had a beer with the drummer of Candlebox.

Mad respect dude! I will never understand how such a beautiful man was given up on by his closest friends. I wish someone could have intervened in his addiction and got him help.i know its just not that easy, speaking out of experience. Just to let him stay up there and shoot drugs all day playing x box or whatever is a heart breaking thing to imagine. I guess many tried helping him but he didn't want it. He knew he'd lived a lifetime already and probably had no more to give. Great job with the video and thanks so much. Can tell you miss him, like all of us do.👍

I'm a huge "grunge" era fan who will prolly not make it there to see for myself, so it's much appreciated that you made this video. The way you presented the video leaves no doubt that you were doing this to tribute Layne and let fans that care about him & his legacy see where he chose to spend his final years.

Actually, his accountant called his mother and told her there had be no activity on any of his accounts for two weeks, so they should check on him, and she requested the police help her. She then asked for a few minutes alone with him, which they gave her, and she sat down on the couch next to his body and said goodbye. That must not have been easy, as not trying to make a joke or be gross, but his body had been sitting there for two weeks, decaying - What I'm saying is that only a mother's love would allow someone to endure that. When they removed his body, they found crack pipes and needles underneath it. Also, what Demri died of was an infection, you're correct, it was caused by the miniscule, almost microscopic, pieces of cotton that get attached to the needle when they clean the tip, and then is inadvertently injected into the bloodstream where it gets to the heart and causes an infection. I believe there's another term for it, but it escapes me at this time. Although he apparently still loved her, obviously, they were broken up at the time and hadn't seen each other for a bit.

I would like to say a little some thing about addiction from a girl who spent 15yrs of her life addicted to speddballs. Well when I was younger like 5 I remember being sold to men so parents could get off. On top of the daily constant physical and mental abuse from my mother to getting jumped by kids at school daily on top of getting constantly made fun of for being the poor and ugly kid I just gave up at 14 and slit my wrists I was brought back to life then at 15 i purposely did some thing stupid and ended up in prison for 4 yrs once i got out I was introduced to this drug that numbed all my pain and hurt. It really worked at first but then it became a thing I couldn't not do. I've died 4 times 2 on purpose 2 accidentally. Im now sober 3 yrs and my mind is back to that 14yr old girls hell. Im tryimg to maintain my brain but it's hard when tne o it thing that helps is the thing that'll kill me. I refuse to be a statistic. I hope my Shit story has helped even a little to understand why someone would want it.

Don’t ever doubt your creative content Scott, I’m a huge fan of Layne Staley and AIC, and I’m not offended at all, it’s a good way to show us fans the places that we can’t go and see on our own for whatever reason, the moment you ask yourself if it’s in bad taste is the exact moment people who are easily offended or aren’t even a fan will say it “is” in poor taste, it looks like they remodeled the building a bit since he passed, and your right about the song “don’t follow” being appropriate for this video, for those of you who don’t know that song is off the greatest selling EP of all time (Jar of Flies), great video Scott! Thanks again for another Seattle location people like me can’t go see on our own so appreciate you showing it to us...

Thank you for educating me, I met Mike Starr a few months after he was on Celebrity Rehab. Mike Starr was playing at a Southern California winery with his new band-a good friend knew him and introduced us- Mike was kind & a talented man who told me he needed to stay away from his old friends because of his addiction and he sadly passed away a few months after I met him. Mike was so honest about his trials & tribulations. Sounds like Mike was the last person to see Layne-maybe some guilt? Very tragic story! I had also met Slash a few months before Mike and I didn’t realize how Slash was trying to get his friends into rehab. Slash is exactly what you see-kind & quiet man. His wife (now his ex) talked for him. In the Winery business you meet many celebrities, most were nice people.
