I love the originality of this show and the authenticity, but wow.. they do not make it easy to remember the names of the important people, even if that is how people used to be named, I've watched this show for 4 seasons and can't tell you who is aethelfred, utherhelm, or butterbean lol none of them... way too complicated to retain.

This is a great show and it's so underrated. The acting is excellent and the entire production is so high level. This show deserves a lot more recognition and awards than it gets. The one thing that I wish was better is that there's not a consistent/strong love story for the lead actor. He jumps around from woman to woman too much before the viewers can even get bought into their relationship.

Agreed. They were pushing the Aethelflaed romance pretty hard but I never really bought into it for some reason. I really liked Gisela though, I wish she would have survived longer.

Great recap. Something that wasn’t touched on that I want to point out that is that Aethelfaed’s daughter is HEAVILY implied to in fact be Erik’s daughter rather than Aethelreds. I don’t know if it I’ll come up on Season 5 but I think it’s worth knowing.

Love TLK! In real life, Eduard's son Athelstan is entrusted to his sister Aethelflaed, Lady of Mercia, not Uhtred who is fictional. It is in large part thanks to the alliance she kept with Eduard all her life to keep the saxon kingdoms allied, the building campaign of fortifications across Mercia she undertook, the large chunks of territories she retook back from Danes, and her education of Athelstan into a leader that Alfred's dream finally was realized when Athelstan finally united the kingdoms and became the first king of England. She was even on her way to York because the danes had finally submitted to her when she died en route. She left an incredible legacy that was overlooked and minimized by Eduard's saxon chroniclers. If it hadn't been for welsh and irish chroniclers telling of her exploits and how she put fear into Eduard's own enemies, we would have lost her name to the dustbin of history. She is barely known even today, with the exception of mercia where they have an annual festival in her name. Meanwhile, Edward ever the w*nker took over mercia when she died by imprisoning her daughter who would succeed her as ruler so he could claim Mercia for himself.

The only thing I would like to point out was that Alfred had no idea Aethelred was abusive to his daughter. In fact, Aethelflaed explicitly forbids Hild and Beocca from telling Alfred, because she knows he would divorce them and punish Aethelred, which would end the alliance between Wessex and Mercia and likely ultimately lead to the defeat of Wessex. She decides to endure the abuse for the good of Wessex because she knows Alfred would choose her over his kingdom.

I love that the movie is in production right now featuring young Osbert. He will be the one to carry on Uhtred's male bloodline since his older brother Uhtred "Jr" was cruelly castrated. Hilt kept him safe after his mother died in childbirth. This movie will be totally epic, and I'm sure that young Osbert will have his father's fighting spirit. :)
