This show is amazing, with great written and well-acted characters, this is just the setup, the story will keep growing like a fire, and it will be hard to not get attached to these characters.

This is one of the few episodes where almost all of Uhtred's decisions, are unjustifiable (both morally and "legally" based on the laws of the land of the time). And that's the crux of the show, Uhtred is a hotheaded character and he keeps on making decisions that place him in these situations. Alfred is almost always forced into taking action against Uhtred for one reason or another.

Alfred isn't the bad guy here. Uhtred's temper, belligerence and petulance has been an issue from the start. Uhtred is also angry that Alfred keeps outsmarting him. "The bastard thinks" Their dynamic is so great because if they could both get over their distrust of each other they'd be unstoppable. Uhtred needs to calm down and just play the game, instead of acting out like an idiot.
