"Alone, a guardsman can do nothing." The Cadian says with pikes through his hands chained to a wall. He raises his head to meet the Black Legionnaire's face that has blazing demonic eyes peering through sunken flesh. "But a guardsman is never alone." In the distance, artillery begins decimating the compounds outer perimeter, whistles can be heard from all directions, and one chant bellowed by thousands of men. "CADIA STANDS!"

The Kriegsman comes to honor his fallen brothers and sisters, but finds that the place where their graves once stood to be barren, the flowers that surround their graves covering and hiding the helmets. Making it seem like they were never there.

But he does not despair, for where once their markers stood on a blasted battlefield of torn and scarred earth, now they sleep amongst the vibrance of a living world. Their death was not in vain, their lives given so that the planet could survive and grow beautiful once more. In life, shame. In death, atonement.

Just brothers. Kriegsman are almost certainly all a sort of clone of one incredibly hard bastard, that was willing to become a monster and nuke a world to near total oblivion, rathee than let it succeed from two Imperium. If there are women on Krieg, and that's actually questionable, rhey would exist only to bare more soldiers and work to supply them arms and equipment. Krieg exists purely for war. It's a loving hell that has absolutely no room for anything other than total war, as efficiently and zealously as possible.

@@Reyfan601 I think it goes even deeper than that. Kriegsmen believe they are born with the original sin of treason. The penalty for treason is death, so they can only gain absolution by dying in battle. To be forgiven in life is unthinkable, because the Emperor never pardons traitors. That's what makes the Emperor fair and strong, and is why they have such fanatical trust in him. If the Emp forgave them in life it would destroy the foundation their entire culture is built on. They would percieve him doing so as arbitrary and weak. There is nothing more heretical.

What I find so beautiful about this, is that their graves don't remain in a blasted wasteland. Ironically, the Death Korps have a unique religion. They would not mourn their dead. They would salute them, for the virtue of service fulfilled. He who dies for the Emperor, lives forever at His side. Lads, it looks like the ammo ran out. They're coming. It has been my genuine honor to lead you these many years! Fix your bayonets, and wait for the word! I shall see you all before the Golden Throne. Let's not keep Him waiting eh? (whistle)

Christians not only believe that our dead have triumphed, and that they will be by our Father's side, but that we will meet them again in heaven and stand with them in the resurrection. Nevertheless, we grieve when they are separated from us and morn the deaths of loved ones, even when we are certain of their joy in the hereafter. Why would it not be the same for Kriegers, who for all their indoctrination are still human, to morn lost friends and loved ones?

The Kriegers believe that death is the only way to truly atone for their past sins. Dying in the name of the Emperor is the ultimate display of faith. Each and every one of them are fully, wholeheartedly, willing to march into certain death if it meant that they could be forgiven by the Emperor. Every dead Krieger is a soul forgiven.

Only in death shall duty be served, where all is forgiven and where there is peace. A kriegsmen does not wish to be remembered, for they have accepted to be a toolof the imperium. @@theonly6blake911 Oh no, I'm in agreement on that point. My only point was simply noting that while they may have gone through such indoctrination into the cult of sacrifice, its safe to assume they're going to have the same emotions as normal humans. A belief system can effect how a human being processes emotions such as joy and sadness, but it cannot change the fact that those emotions and responses to certain events are a necessary part of our existence.

Theres an Old Poem from the Ancient Terrans that fits perfectly... In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

In the 42nd millenium, much has happened, after the incredible actions of an imperial loyalist group that managed to bring back the broken and scattered souls of the god emperor to its body on Earth , much of the events at the galaxy at large became a blur, the war was no more a losing battle but an ever grander reconquest of all lost sectors and with the eye of terror finally shut and the final tyranide invasion stopped by an impromptu alliance between the Imperium of Mankind and the Silent King. Much of the Imperial worlds we're at last, in peace. One such planets was Krieg, a planet once known for producing millions of soldiers a month was now going a phase of regrowth with the vegetation and liberated animals free of their genetical modifications roaming the land. After the last battle for erasure of the eye of terror, a titanical battle between thousands of demonic prince and the god emperor and its Custodes, 100% of all Krieg personnel were sent to fight in the name of the emperor. In the aftermath of the battle, the God Emperor himself seeing the ever loyal Kriegsman action with a fervor that could rival even his own close guard. Would officially pardon all of Krieg for their ancestors crimes. But such an event reduced Kriegs forces to a barely 5 person strong unit, marking them as the last Kriegsman. By their choice, no more soldiers would be produced, no more of Krieg would be used for war, no more death would come. Bringing us now to the last Krieg, Keled R83940E84BT7 would approach the grave of his comrad and friend, lost during the finishing hours of the war against the tyranids. Their death brought them full military honor with a parade and all that comes with it, but such a thing felt hollow to Keled. still having a part of his soul stuck to this era of his life that made him into a war machine. So with nothing to do of his time, he would make 4 'final posts' for his comrad. in the true tradition of all dead kriegsman. Now hundreds of years old, way older than any guardsman that ever breathed inside and outside of Krieg, Keled couldnt stop himself to check one last time on the resting place of his comrad.

Wait when snow is falling fast, Wait when summer's hot, Wait when yesterdays are past, Others are forgot. Wait, when from that far-off place, Letters don't arrive. Wait, when those with whom you wait Doubt if I'm alive. Wait for me, and I'll come back! Wait in patience yet When they tell you off by heart That you should forget. Even when my dearest ones Say that I am lost, Even when my friends give up, Sit and count the cost, Drink a glass of bitter wine To the fallen friend - Wait! And do not drink with them! Wait until the end! Wait for me and I'll come back, Dodging every fate! "What a bit of luck!" they'll say, Those that would not wait. They will never understand How amidst the strife, By your waiting for me, dear, You had saved my life. Only you and I will know How you got me through. The fact he was carrying poppies hit me very hard; poppies are the flower of death in war and the strongest representation of WW1; which the Death Korps are based on WW1 Germany. There was a lot about this that hit hard with me; especially since the graves are long since gone by the time the one who made them has returned.

You know, if you think about it, the ultimate dream for Krieg is a world where they're no longer needed. If all the enemies have fallen, then there is no purpose for them any longer. They will have finally, at last, redeemed themselves through service.

Whilst the individual in 40K that fights in the Imperial Guard will most certainly be forgotten by their name, the Emperor will forever remember their service and their victories will always be remembered and celebrated by those that live in the worlds tarnished from war from generation to generation. Honestly, a really humble animation, though static, it has a lovely but suitable melancholy charm to it, keep up the good work!

The field full of poppies is so beautiful. Because poppies are symbolic of a peaceful death, are associated with Remembrance Day (the end of WW1), and the Kriegers are modeled after WW1 German soldiers.

"And as the last of that war-torn world knelt before the Emperor, begging forgiveness, last bayonet broken and charge pack expended, grenades all thrown and armor all shattered, fists bloodied, nails broken, I saw that it was not the Enemy who destroyed Krieg. "It was Him. "For with five words, the Emperor laid low the last child of Krieg. In an instant, every sacrifice Krieg ever made was rendered useless, with nothing but five words that washed it all away like paper before a flame; *"There is nothing to forgive."* "And on that day I knew that the child kneeling before the Emperor could be a child of Krieg no longer, for what was Krieg without her sins? "It is the same blasted wasteland. A great basalt tomb. "But now, it is a a tomb called Pax."

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Just thought I’d put this here, the flowers that cover the field look to be Poppies, they were popularized during WW1 because they still bloomed in the terrible conditions of no-mans land, it was believed that they were red because of the blood that sank into the ground. Now why I bring up Poppies is because a famous WW1 poem called “Flanders Field” is about Poppies, and it was created after someone witnessed the death of a close friend. Poppies are also worn as a reminder of WW1 and that we won’t forget those that gave their lives, this sound eerily familiar. WW1 was also were Blitzkrieg was born, pioneered by the German Stormtroopers.

I don't know what the flowers at the end are meant to be, but in my eyes they are Poppies. If you don't know, poppies are linked with WW1, and are a way of showing remembrance to those who fell in the line of duty during those 5 years. And with the Kriegsmen being so heavily based on WW1 Germany, it hit's really hard for me. Just that last shot with no context of what Warhammer 40K is would be enough for me to feel something, and I love that.

For me the best thing about this, is how the environment recovers and returns to its previous state before whatever battle they died in took place. For things like their helmets to vanish completely, their resting place must have enjoyed a lasting peace. This means that the battle they gave their lives in was not fought in vain.

"No te pares en mi tumba a llorar” de Mary Elizabeth Frye: No te pares en mi tumba a llorar. No estoy ahí. Yo no duermo. Soy los mil vientos que soplan. Soy los destellos de diamante en la nieve. Soy la luz del sol sobre el maduro grano. Soy la suave lluvia de otoño cuando despiertes en la mañana silenciosa. Soy la rápida y estimulante carrera de tranquilos pájaros que vuelan en círculos. Soy las estrellas suaves que brillan por la noche. No te pares en mi tumba a llorar. No estoy ahí. Yo no morí.

One of the beautiful things I interpreted from the Imperial Aquila held in the beginning, is that the eagle head with no eyes meaning looking at the past of man is through bloodshed hence the bloody side is on the blind eagle. Where as the bright light shining on the eagle with the open eye showing man looking towards the future is bright and beautiful. It's make believe that their fight was not in vein, and more so to bring a beautiful and brighter future to man.

In fact, there is an even greater tragedy here if you understand the context. The Krieg Death Corps are recruited from a planet that is a nuclear wasteland. They are psychologically broken during training, turning them into pathological suicides thinking only about Death and atonement for the separatism of 500 years ago. And then one survivor tries to honor the death of his comrades-in-arms and regret that he is still alive, because for them death is atonement for their sins of betrayal. For him it is literally possible torture.

They died in the service of the emperor, for a Krieger there is no greater honor and it is an honor he has yet to be granted as he did not fall with his brothers and sisters.
