Before I went to Paris I bought the z6 and the 50mm, said a prayer I'd made the right decision, and off to Europe I went. At the end of the first day, the images looked good on the back of the camera. Damn good. But when I returned to the hotel room and downloaded them to the PC I almost lost my breath. I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. I echo your sentiments about the image quality and would like to add that the damn thing is so quiet focusing you really have to strain to hear it. I've since added the 24mm and 85mm and recently installed Firmware 3.0. After seven months of use, I'd have to say that my prayers were answered. The z prime glass punches so far above its weight class, oh so very far. And with 3.0's autofocus improvements ... all is right with the world.

I totally agree with you. So many people jumped the gun saying the z6 and Z7 were trash. Some changed their minds after using it for a bit. People still do without even trying it. But I bought my Z6 last March before the first firmware update came out and I was amazed on how great it was using pinpoint focus. But after they added eye af it was a game changer for me. My clients were all shocked with the results. The eyes were so sharp. I used nothing but f mount lenses adapted to the z6 for the first 6 months and then I first picked up the new 50mm f1.8S and was blown away on what stealth and accuracy it had. So I picked up the 85mm f1.8S and I just love it too. Nikon really did their homework on these lenses. I glad they didn't come out with the f1.2 lenses first cuz I wouldn't have been able to afford them right away. But I didn't update to the second firmware I left it alone til the 3.0 and it feels like a new camera again. I still like adapting f mount lenses to the z6 cuz there are so many great lenses that work very well with the Z bodies that the next lense I want for my Z6 is the 200mm f2 VR. But if the new 70-200 2.8 is that good maybe I will that instead. Glad your happy with your decision. I know I have been

The 50 1,8 was the first lens i bought for the Z7, but exchanged the 7 for a 6 when they became available in my citya year ago. I thought the 6 would be better in low light theater/ballet work plus still be high enough res for portraiture if my D850 was not enough. Soon, I added other S lenses and every one of them exceeded the optical performance of any of my collection of F mount fast primes and 2.8 zooms. I have 6 lenses in the 50-58 range and not one of them has been used in the last year since the Z body and 50 arrived. It has been 6 months since using the D850. I added the 24-70 f/4 S, 35 1.8, 24 1.8, 85 1.8 and finally the 24-70 2.8 S and they all perform optically better than any lens I have at the same FL. When the 70-200 2.8 finally arrives all my F mount glass, will be sold off. My walking around kit in a small sling bag is Z6, 50, 85 and 24-70 f/4. The low cost f/4 is derided as just "a kit lens" but what zoom is sharper corner to corner, and so free of CA/color fringing? The only one better is the 2.8 version. I have both the 24-70 2.8 G and E, which were highly regarded lenses but the little f/4 is optically superior with better color, speed, and sharpness. The 2.8 is on another plane. I have the Sigma ART 50 and 85, and both right in the center 20% are as sharp as the S lenses but moving away from that center circle and the S lenses take over dramatically. The corners are just as devoid of CA and fringing as the center and very close in sharpness. The very edge of the 50 is sharper than the center of my Nikkor 50 1.4G. Nikon can't produce these lenses in other mounts since the industry largest flange diameter and shortest flange distance is part of why these lenses blow up the rep of so much more expensive glass. Being so short in flange distance means any lens made in any mount can be adapted to a Z camera. Adapters for Sony and Canon are available now but unless one already has a collection of those lenses, the native Z lenses are cheaper and better. Check the 85 S lens, I have not seen a better 85, it is certainly better than the Sigma ART 85 I have. There are a lot of reasons users of Z cameras love them , although it is hated by KZbin guru personalities, but very few of them are photographers and are only your tube personalities, some earning millions yearly for pushing cameras. But talk to users of the Z cameras and you will get a totally different view. It takes a lot of image goodness to cause an awful lot of us to sideline what is likely the best DSLR ever made, the D850. Whether a commercial shoot or walking around the city(I live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world so walking aimlessly with a camera is a common pastime) There are lots of reasons the YT personalities seem to miss as to why switching to the Z camera is a very good idea. S lenses is one of those reasons. The handling and build quality are up there also. The 3.0 firmware seems to complete the reasons why the Z6 autofocuses better in low light than any camera, including my D850, I have ever used. Since I shoot whole sessions without a single out of focus image I am curious why the YT gurus pan the af so much, it is more accurate than Sony, they one they praise every day, and not tracks as well or better. But what good is tracking if the focus is not as accurate? Same with MF Focus Peaking, Sony is not as accurate so friends who have them do not MF. It is a dream to MF on a Z body. My 50 1.2 AIS never was so much fun to use wide open as after getting the Z. Anyone doing product, fine art, etc knows how important controlling the focal plane is, and how AF decides what the plane will be, not the image requirement or photographers intent. If you can't trust the focus peaking to show where the plane actually is, it is useless. But a box on the screen following a subject that does not reliably represent where the plane actually is, is not a good choice for anyone but a snap shooter.

It allows me as a hobbies or prosumer to have the best system out there. I could not afford the same setup on Canon plus the lenses are all to big and heavy . This, as all of your presentations, is a work of literary art. I also love my copy of that lens. I just had a similar experience with the Nikon 500mm PF on a Z7 body. The first shot was of a kestrel in flight that took my breath away with clarity and color far beyond expectation and in raw format. No CA anywhere and shot against a bright whitish-blue sky. No sharpness added and printed at 20 x 30 inches, this image hangs on my wall as a reminder of what can happen when quality of equipment plays perfectly with rarely experienced circumstance. At $3600, clearly not cheap but a far distance from its five figure, heavyweight siblings.

It is the best camera I have owned and even love the kit lens that comes with it!! I think even the kit lens is one of the sharpest lenses out there and is a wonderful travel lens due to its versatile zoom range, silent and accurate focusing and also its light weight. I completed a trip to Finland where my Z system was subjected to very harsh weather conditions with temperatures reaching nearly negative 35 degrees Celsius and a lot of snowfall. I've often thought of this lens as the killer app for the Z system - or at least it ought to be. Nikon's Z glass certainly was what pushed me over the fence when I was cross shopping the Z system with Sony's and Fuji's systems. It seems odd to me that we are so fixated on the little features of each new body and the really rather minor differences between them. I think that today's cameras are by and large extremely capable and the differences between them are not ultimately that major. Sony and Fuji may both have somewhat better mirrorless bodies than Nikon, but Nikon's Z bodies aren't really that far behind and their lens selection is unquestionably the most appealing to me. As you have noted, they have achieved an admirable balance of weight, size, price, and speed while offering consistently outstanding, class-leading (and in some cases, such as this 50, class-redefining) image quality. A camera body tends to be a mere purchase - something we buy and use for a few years and then upgrade - but a lens purchase is an investment that should last for decades. To me, the most compelling lens investment right now is in Z glass.

I was just out in the middle of a creek for 3 hours taking long exposures with my z6 and 50mm f1.8S til sunset. It is the best 50mm I have ever used. I hated using a 50mm and I had both nikon’s f1.4 &f1.8 “G” lenses I thought they were both mediocre. But these new Z lenses are really impressive it took me almost 6 months to give them a shot. I am so glad that I did. I used it and the 85mm F1.8S for some of the long exposures too and it is even better than the 50mm. When I can’t comes out with the pro version of the F1.4 lens is more than likely I will not even give them a try. I am happy with these lenses. Wishing Nikon would come out with 135 mm. Then I would be truly happy

@@GBB70 I rented the Sigma 105mm F1.4 for a week and shot 7 photo shoots with that lens only on my Z6. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the lens. I didn't want to return it. The weight didn't bother me a bit. But I have been considering trying out the sigma 135mm f1.8 to see if I would like it better. I have an old nikon 135mm f2.8 AIS lens that I picked up I immaculate shape and it takes great portraits manual focus. I really like the kinds vintage colors it does with my Z6. But I don't use it enough with my clients that aren't comfortable in front of the camera. So a sigma 135mm would be my next lens I would like to buy cuz they work great adapted to the z bodies. Or save up and buy a nikon 200mm f2 VR and let er rip. Haha. That is my dream lens.

Thanks for this upload Hugh. I'm about to finally take the plunge and buy a Z6, the recent AF firmware update pushed me over the line. My first choice lenses for my hybrid work where going to be the 24mm S and the 50mm S as they are the two focal lengths I use the most on my D750 for video. All my other lenses I'll use on the FTZ as I don't need speedy AF using them.

@markshirley014 жыл бұрын
@@Photomeike Hi - the D780 was my first choice but then I found out that the second card doesn't back up video. Most of my work is hybrid so it was only 50% useful. The new firmware update on the Z6 means a new way of operating it, a bit like the focus and recompose I use at the moment but it locks and tracks - so perfect for me. The rear screen on the A73 was the only thing I really didn't like on the A73 plus it's just not as nicely designed.

I just bought a Nikon z5, is my first full frame camera, I am an year and half photographer and I use this only as a hobby. it was such a hard decision to make between this prime lens or the zoom z 24 70s because the main idea of the buying was to have a versatile and light camera for my daily life and traveling. I just couldn’t choose the zoom lens, first of all in my short experience trying lenses (I had a Canon M50 with lots of Lenses before because I live in China and the brand Aartisan is cheap and decent enlugh to buy lenses and try them for a very small amount of money), I am not into zoom lenses that much, second I am in love with the 50mm in general and third is because I cannot stop listening good thinks about this lens. Cannot wait to get my new camera in a few days and try it with this lens!!!!

It is an amazing lens and the combo is just fantastic. The bokeh blew me away and the colours are gorgeous, it is super sharp and in works perfectly in combination with firmware 3.0 with the autofocus. My pictures from my D3500, with the 35mm 1.8 DX (equivalent of 52.5 mm) fall way short of this new combo. I am really happy about the camera and can't wait till it returned. I like your appeal to Nikon to sell their lenses in other mounts..... The problem is that the difference in distance from the proximal end of the lens to the sensor is shorter on all of the Nikon Z camera / lenses than any other full frame camera. It's easy to add distance (with an adapter Nikon F to Z for example, or by adding flange distance at the proximal end of a lens (if Tamron wants to make it's current lenses mount directly onto the Z line of cameras for example). However for the lenses that Nikon has engineered they need the distance from the lens closest to the sensor, and the distance to the sensor to be the same. So unless another camera manufacturer comes up with a shorter distance or the same distance they can't make any of their current lenses work at the same technical level on another camera. I agree this is a phenomenal lens.... better than any other 50mm lens I have used in the last 37 years (when I got my first 50mm lens for a Minolta SLR).

Not sure if it's possible for Nikon to make any Z mount lens for any other camera/mount system that doesn't have a shorter flange back distance than the Z mount at 16mm. If it were, it would be more than a simple spacer adapter, either requiring an additional optical element, thus altering the original design of the lens element arrangement, or via digital adjustment, also altering the original image as projected through the lens itself. You don't hear much crowing about the S-Line Z mount lenses outside of Nikon users (probably about ten times more people demanding the faster, high end glass that Nikon marketing said was the reason for the Z mount), but most of those Z system users recognize and acknowledge the superiority of the lenses due in no small part to the short flange back distance and wider diameter mount.

It is interesting that Matt Granger did a comparison of some of the best Nikon 50mm lenses, among them some very well regarded lenses from years' past. The z series really stood out to me in the blind comparison in so many ways. Great minds obviously think alike. There is more to this lens and probably the system than just the numbers tell. When you add in the low light performance of the z6 for both stills and video, it has me thinking about a complete changeover from my well loved d850 and some really fine glass. Yes, less MP, but I think so much more usability and in some ways better images. Thanks again Hugh for the great review

I don't think Nikon Z lenses can be adapted to other mounts because they have the widest mount and the shortest flange distance. But these properties may also explain why they are so excellent.

Mmm. A most compelling case, m’learned friend. Even greater doubt is now in my mind about having half-heartedly entered the realm of Sony, which was really guided by the attractions of the Zeiss FE 55mm 1:1.8 rather than Sony technology. My starting point with all systems has always been how good their fifties are. And how compact: I would rather carry a heavy body than a behemoth lens, no matter how impressive its charts are. Probably I should wait and see how Canon progresses and in any case, thanks to HM Inland Revenue, I have no spare money. Or time. I love this series about the Last Lenses You’ll Ever Need ! Let’s have another please - and sooner than in another six months if possible !

I hear you! I also love the 50mm focal length. I own the Sony Zeiss 50mm f1.4 and it’s actually my favourite E-Mount lens. It’s truly incredible on the A7RIII, but it’s BIG (it looks like a zoom with the hood attached). It’s just not practical for most scenarios you’d actually use a 50mm lens for. To your point; I just picked up a Nikon Z6 here in the UK from an AD for the same price as a Lumix G9! Basically half price. So if you can manage with 1 card slot... Wait for a killer deal and grab yourself one of the Z cameras. It’s honestly a no brainer at those prices with these 1.8 S lenses. Don’t be put off by the unfair criticism of the Z system. It’s the best piece of hardware in it’s class (IMO), Japanese made and the firmware will only get better. You’ll thank me!

I just got this lens and indeed it's a good performer so far. However, when I compared it with the Sigma 40mm 1.4 it's not even close. The Sigma smokes it and was $750 used so the two aren't that far apart. The advantage is that the 1.8s is the lens I'm more likely to leave on the camera for its size and weight.

I agree 1000%. I have this lens with the Z7 and Z50. I love using it as the results are among the best 50's I have owned. I also had the Sony / Zeiss 55 f1.8 with a Sony A7iii. That lens was also excellent. Far better than the similar Sony /Zeiss 35 2.8. From a visual perspective the Nikon Z 50 1.8 to me has the ability to put together a photo combining pin sharp details and then fall off beautifully when subjects get out of focus. I have also used this 50 with my Z50. Gives that camera body a boost in image quality for certain types of work. I also agree with you about Nikon's choice so far which lenses to bring out for their Z series. I much prefer smaller lighter high quality glass that they have been making as opposed to large-extreamilty large, heavy, and very expensive lenses that some makers have chosen to focus on. But that is just me. I understand that some like epic f1.2 or f.95 lenses and that is their choice.

With the Z lenses however being so much more expensive than F mounts in general, up to 10 times more counting EC used F mounts, I have not made the switch yet to the Z system. I started using Topaz sharpening for a retaliative few critical photos and it is a game changer. I am not so sure if the best of the best glass is now important to me after seeing the improvements with that software.
