But if everyone knows Ellie would have agreed to it, then isn't that just the same? Marlene knew Ellie would have agreed, Ellie already told Joel she was willing to do whatever it took, and Joel even acknowledges he knew what Ellie's choice was. Only Joel was in disagreement about what should be done, so he's The Bad Guy.

Joel was completely right in saving Ellie. I feel he did it because he loves her but that's not why he's right. Ellie (a 14yr old child) was being sacrificed for a lab experiment to possibly make a cure. They did no tests, no bloodwork, no studying - just right off to operate and take out part of her brain. The Fireflies are zealots and don't care about human rights. Think about this - what is the difference from them killing Ellie for the good of the many and last weeks cannibalism and eating people for the good of the many? It gets to be a slippery slope when even one person's life is less valuable than anyone else's. What about all the healthy people the army killed in the beginning because the dead couldn't be infected. Also at 14 Ellie is still a child that has been raised with messed up views from the various people she's known. Her brain functions keep maturing into her 20's and at this age she it's harder to think about the future and consequences. That's why children shouldn't be given adult decisions to make. Sometimes you have to lie to children to keep their world safe. He can tell her the truth later when she's better able to handle it. Would she really need to know right now that Marlene (who she trusted) took her and was going to kill her and experiment with her for possibly no reason? No. I'm looking forward to next season!

exactly and as a parent sometimes u gotta chose what’s best for ur kid because she has a 14 yr mindset and she could of possibly chose to saved the world and these people dont fully know if sacrificing her for the world would actually work they are just assuming it might! now that’s selfish asf! people saying joel is in the wrong shouldn’t be parents lmao because he probably would of told her the truth when she was old enough to hear it and understand where he coming from! they world isnt joels responsibility ! and they probably would of killed her for a “cure “ that wouldn’t have worked! so they put this child though hell!

1st off they did do test. Marlene explained that that's how they knew they needed to cut out part of her brain, 2nd most people know that the cannibalism thing wasn't the problem considering as how it's implied that they eat already dead people, but did you forget the child molester guy? That's what people hate Edit: Also you call firefly zealots. Radicals I'd accurate, zealot is not. My guy these people have legit fought for this cure. They were both in the wrong but you can understand why Joel did it. It would be like losing his daughter again and in that moment he is not thinking about the whole world he's just thinking about saving Ellie. The Fireflies don't even know if her blood is the cure so they're potentially killing her for no reason. They were aggressive and didn't even give Ellie a choice, like yeah she said she wanted to go through with it but she had no idea she would die. Even if she would have agreed to go through with it, it was about giving her a choice. Joel shooting them was valid because he was trying to get to his daughter but he should not have lied to Ellie about it. I know that deep down Ellie knows that he is lying but says "okay" because she's too scared to lose him or be on her own. Can't wait for season 2 to see how it all plays out!

We cannot view Ellie's death as "saving the world". Her death only grants the fireflies a small chance to same themselves, and let everyone who hasn't joined their cause die. They clearly will not distribute the cure to everyone, and not giving Ellie a choice in the matter makes it clear that this version of humanity is not worth sacrificing an innocent life for.

They are wrong for not giving her a choice so the fireflies are totally in the wrong but the problem on Joel's side is that he didn't give her a choice either by lying to her after taking them all out, and the most important factor is that Ellie would have wanted to do it, even if it was a maybe, and he knows that. He did it for him not for her. He betrayed her trust and now she knows it. Joel simply CANNOT lose another daughter. Every fiber of his being was doing whatever it takes for him not to feel that loss again. That means he won't allow Ellie to sacrifice herself. He will FORCE her to live. Marlene is a great leader. Able to make the decisions necessary for the greater good. Neither Marlene nor Joel were willing to give Ellie a choice. You could say Ellie is willing to sacrifice herself but I think if she was given the choice and Joel had a chance to plead for her to live life, he could potentially have convinced her to live just a few more years before ending it.

You can tell Nathan isn't close to being a dad or protector. BS Nathan! Ellie saved Joel's life just like he saved hers- Ever hear of "shared trama"? Combine that with a man who found himself again after losing a child because of another. She wasn't some random person he knew for a month. They traveled across a post-apocalyptic countryside together, mostly on foot while having to pause for an extended period for Joel to heal after being impaled so to be that blasé and say, "Oh well, life sucks?" Gice me a break. My mom lost a son and I saw the dark place she went to. She even thought about fostering because I was in college and she needed something to fill the void. Yes, Joel made a selfish decision, but so did Marlene by not even telling Ellie what they were going to nor give her and Joel a chance to at least say good-bye. The Fireflies had no proof their theory would work. They never had an immune person before so what if they took her brain and killed her and it still didn't work? Oh, that's right it goes back to "Oh well, the world sucks!" Give me a break. I gave Davion shit during the last reaction for the whole "fact v. Logic" conversation so I just don't aim my comments at anyone in particular, but Nathan, this one's for you. Can't wait for your next Umbrella Academy reaction. It's getting GOOD!

But if I was in Joel position, I would have done the exact same thing. Non of the Fireflies were bad people, they were objectively right.....but that's my baby. I could live with the fact that I'm a bad person, but I wouldn't be able to live without her.
@soemmasays

The Fireflies absolutely were bad people. They were killing a child without her consent without even knowing if it would work and hadn't even tried anything else with her considering she'd only been there a few hours probably. They also didn't give her a chance to say goodbye to the man she'd spent 6+ months with at that point. They also threatened to kill Joel if he tried to stop them from killing Ellie and beat him multiple times (knocking him out, hitting him in the hospital). They may have had good intentions, but they were still absolutely bad people.

I think Joel 100% made the right decision of saving Ellie from certain death. It may have been selfish but the love and affection he felt for Sarah at the start of the game was obviously huge as it was his daughter. Then the next 20 years he felt he was living an empty life until Ellie came. As time went along he started feeling that same love and affection he had with Sarah with Ellie. The claims he should have stayed until Ellie woke up is just so unrealistic. Marlene would have done everything to get Ellie back so him killing her was definitely something he needed to do. But this is why this game was so great and now the TV show as well. I have never seen a game stir up such a fight about if a character was right or wrong ever. This game had a great commentary of what happens when someone loses touch with love in their life and how if that feeling ever comes back what they will do to keep it as much as possible.
@superronjon
@superronjon Жыл бұрын
He absolutely did not need to. Marlene could have killed him multiple times if she wanted to. She had the jump on him. She surrendered her gun to him when she didn't need to. She didn't because she wants to work with him to do the right thing. She gives him a second chance and he chooses the selfish option, he completely had the opportunity to give her a choice if he wanted to. But he knows what she would choose so he can't give her the choice, so he kills Marlene so that she can't choose to do it, and then he lies to her because he knows she would hate him for taking that away from her. That's the whole reason that garage scene exists. To show us that Joel is truly choosing the selfish option that he knows is against what Ellie would want, but that is the only decision he can make because he can't live without her, and we also understand that completely.

heres why i side with joel in this situation and hear me out: yes, ellie wanted to play her part to save humanity and it was wrong of joel to take that from her, but at the same time, you have to consider that they weren't sure if it would even work. so they ran the risk of killing a 14 year old girl for no reason and even if it DID work, how do you think the fireflys would be able to actually mass produce and distribute this "cure?" they didn't have the supplies or manpower for that to work in a broken society thats full of various groups with their own agendas. they had what, a few doctors with who knows how much experience who have tried and failed countless times before. this is fungal infection that likely doesnt have a possibility of being turned into a vaccine, as was mentioned by that scientist in the very beginning of the show. I don't think they could have realistically saved humanity in a post apocalyptic world with no stable government or cohesive society. joel saved her from dying for a lost cause

This is what he thinks about everyday, but with Sarah. He wishes he had the ability to do this for her. Now he has the ability, and refuses to not use it this time. He lost one daughter, he can’t go through losing another. Especially not after the scar story. My other main point is, the whole cure deal was only chance. There was NO guarantee it would work. They were going to remove her brain on a MAYBE. that’s killing your only chance for a cure on a theory. Like. Tf? She’s the only immune. Joel taking them out provided time, time for a new cure theory with a higher success chance, and just maybe, a way without killing Ellie. Now, was Joel right in lying to Ellie? No. But he knew if he told the truth, he could lose Ellie in a way that’s sometimes worse than death. Especially since he killed Marlene too, who Ellie specifically asked about because she cares for her. All Joel wants is his quiet life with Ellie. Tommy is a bonus. Sorry for the long comment. I love y’all, and loved watching this series of reactions!!❤️❤️

If he had taken her up on this second chance, Ellie would be awake soon and he can ensure that she has a choice in the matter. Inserting hypotheticals into the ending defeats the point of the ending, there is no “if she had a choice” because she didn't. Joel's story shows that being ready to die doesn't mean you can go through with it. Ellie does not know that doing this will get her killed, not only that, but she does not know that there is no guarantee it will result in a cure. Joel does know this and he is not going to accept losing this girl who makes his life worth living on a maybe, especially when humanity has largely devolved back to its animalistic, uncivilized beginning. I go back and forth on wether Ellie would truly be willing to die, but I do know that I wouldn't want her to make that choice because she feels guilty that she is immune and others aren't. I would want her making the decision as objectively as possible and I don't think a few months removed from her trauma with David was a good headspace to make that decision.

This is one hell of a show awesome acting but that being said OMG how many zombie shows have we seen? And there all the same to be now but this show was good a Joel we know he didn't do the right thing but he was not going too lose this girl but season 2 there's going too be some problems with his lie.

imagine saving the world and both ur kids are gone only to save everyone else! she 14 he did what a parent would do and is protect his child ! and ellie is a minor she is gonna possibly wanna save the world and as a parent who wants the best life for his daughter is too not see her get sacrificed just to save a world that’s already dead most of the human race is gone so what’s the point in killing her? to get a vaccine? lmaooo sometimes as a parent u gotta make the best choice for ur child because thet might not be mature enough to think about they leaving behind someone who lost alot of people and will be tramatized again for losing another kid! he shouldn’t have lied tho the fireflies are dead so he should of just told her the truth even if she can’t handle it

I'm always gonna be team Joel in this. They treated Ellie and Joel like shit. They had that coming, not only do I not believe in a cure but I doubt the Fireflies would even be able to save humanity. Look where it has come. They would either keep it to themselves or get raided and the cure would be distributed selfishly elsewhere. It would be for nothing, and that's not even guaranteeing it works. But they should have at least woken up Ellie. Ellie deserves to know what is about to happen. If she is about to save the world, shouldn't they let her die peacefully knowing she is going to save the world? Her last moments were in panic, looking for Joel when they got attacked. The Fireflies are always going to be the selfish ones in my eyes. But what is selfishness in a post-apocalyptic world? Everyone is selfish that is how you survive. Joel is selfish, Marlene is selfish. Marlene's cause was to save the world (which is far-fetched) and Joel's cause was Ellie, his world. They both fought and Joel won.

I hated Joel so much at the end! I mean even ignoring that he loves Ellie like a daughter, he didn’t give her a choice in the matter, and essentially stole the cure that could’ve saved all of humanity. I don’t really see the fireflies as bad people, just people who were thinking about the many lives and not just the one. Don’t get me wrong, I hate HOW they handled the situation, but I understand the WHY

Marlene didn’t give her an option either AND there’s no guarantee the “cure” would work. Didn’t even run tests before hand and if she dies and the cure doesn’t work, guess what? They can’t try again. She’s dead and her death would have been in vain.

I swear even before I watched this I know they’re gonna be hating on Joel , I’ve seen a lot of their reactions from other shows and they’re easily the most stupid reactors I’ve ever come across.

ellie is 14 years old, if i was her parent i wouldn't care about her choice on deciding to end her life either. we all know she would've said yes because she feels like she owes it to the world but i'm not letting any person i care so deeply about die just so others can live especially with how many times it was mentioned that people are the real danger in this world. and it's selfish and joel did a horrible thing but the fireflies are bad people as well and i feel like a lot of people forget that because they're trying to make a cure so immediately they're labeled as "good", literal terrorist group that was bombing people for their "cause" in the 1st ep so who's to say they wouldn't be using the vaccine as a tool to gain political power? it's naive to think they'd just be giving it to people without wanting nothing in return or wouldn't gatekeep the vaccine for their factions only. so in the end, it all comes down to picking which evil you'd go with; shooting up a hospital so your daughter can live or killing your only immune patient based on a theory but it's a chance you're willing to take because you're desperate for a cure.

She’s a 14 year old girl. Call me selfish, but idc what she says, if I see her as my daughter I’m not giving her a choice either. Plus bro, think about what he’s already been through. It’s clear that he has some type of psychological trauma from losing his Sarah. So losing Ellie too? Out of the question. At the end of the day dawg, from his perspective the world done already took too much from him. Or, in an effort to give him a less selfish look, he already gave too much. Me personally, I’m doing the same thing as my boy Joel.

Nathan is right. Joel was selfish, he didn't care the rest of humanity or about how Ellie felt and only how he felt. Miss me with the "that was like his daughter" cause Ellie made it clear that she's her own person and she was clear that they saw the cure through until the end. And you can make it a story just about Joel's fatherhood arc but that really does ignore how dirty Ellie was done by him.
