I've watched this scene of Joel telling Ellie the truth several times and felt so sad for Joel every time. But this time, I fully empathized with the intense horror Ellie felt at that very moment, that she was humanity's best chance for a hopeful future, for factions to come together, to rebuild, and eventually eradicate the cordyceps. Ellie felt this terrible guilt and dread that the world remained a nightmare as a consequence for preventing her operation.

And yes I know about the recordings of Marlene saying the cure wouldn't work, the world is already too lost to be saved, and also how little civilisations like Jackson would be ok anyway ...but what if the Fireflies succeeded in the fabrication of a cure. Imagine the military and other factions started trusting and praising the Fireflies because of that glimmer of hope... that the world could be saved...

Notice how in the beginning of the game, Joel tells Tommy he saved Ellie. Here, he tells her he stopped them. Maybe he did regret what he did a little bit, but after watching Ellie grow up and have a life for herself, I think he fully believed he did the right thing.
@marianoyuba37363 жыл бұрын
I think that, in a way, Ellie defined herself by the purpose her mutation afforded her rather than by how she was as a person (no doubt out of survivor's guilt after Riley died and she didn't), so she simply can't see herself as worth saving (other than to get to the Fireflies and help make a cure) and sees Joel's actions as cheating her out of her destiny and nothing else. I think that once Ellie starts making a life for herself and starts seeing her own self worth, she starts veeeeeeeery slowly taking in Joel's point of view and understanding that she saved her because she mattered to him and that she was more than just a cure (and she had a life worth living).

We didn't see any flashbacks of his daughter Sarah or Ellie's best friend.
@marianoyuba37363 жыл бұрын
@@blkeclipsel2400 Yep, the only use of flashbacks as regards the original game was the Left Behind expansion. (Ellie at the mall caring for Joel after he's impaled / Ellie at the mall with Riley short before meeting Joel). The prologue with Sarah doesn't really count, it's just the story starting there and jumping about 15 years. The first one was much more straightforward and simple and focused on the relationship between Joel and Ellie progressing naturally in the span of more or less a year (which didn't mean it was any less complex). TLOU 2 didn't have an easy task, juggling two opposing protagonists and their points of view while dealing with the fallout of the first game's ending and asking you to play as Joel's killer...it's debatable whether it NEEDED to be as complicated, which worked for some and didn't for others and was quite polarizing overall, but at the very least it was pretty ambitious and didn't exactly take the easy way out. (again, a debatable statement, since many consider the story to be predictable and cliched...)

See you clearly missed the whole point of the game. This IS the center of the game and why Ellie goes on her revenge rampage. She has the worst survivors guilt of all time. She was the only hope for humanity and Joel took that from her and the entire species. So when Abby kills Joel, Ellie's still distant but she still cares so there's a desire to find forgiveness for Joel over time, but then Abby takes that away from her. Both of their journeys in Seattle mirror each other and they both lose everything but Abby chooses mercy, something that Ellie can only do when she has the chance to make that choice herself. Tommy uses her survivors guilt from this moment and Joel's death to push her further. Almost every character in this game got what they deserved including Joel. To be honest Ellie should have saved them all the trouble and killed Joel as soon as he admitted the truth. She had more of a right to kill him than Abby did.

I think the crux of the game is that Ellie feels responsible for Joel’s death because it was a direct consequence of his saving her life and destroying the hope for a cure. @constracted73314 жыл бұрын
@@geordiejones5618 Ellie does get peace in the ending. Peace with herself and her inner conflict with Joel. Ellie could have acquired her revenge. But she saw a flashback of Joel that was not his bloodied face being bashed by a golf club, and at this moment she remembered what Joel sacrificed for her and how she was willing to try to forgive Joel during this flashback. At this moment, she let go of her hate for Abby and forgave her, for to forgive Joel, she must forgive Abby. Ellie learned a very important lesson because of that. Also, in the end, Ellie's reason to hunt down Abby was not solely for revenge. It was a desperate attempt to try to "fix" her PTSD. She thought maybe by avenging Joel, she would be able to forgive him and remedy her PTSD. It was not solely for revenge in the end. Abby made a mistake by having preconceived notions of Joel. If you make that same mistake, you have missed the point of the game. As a player, the game shows you Abby's side of the story and you have to learn to forgive and forget. You play as Abby to gain a deeper insight into her character and to understand her reasons. Then, the decision is up to you. Are you willing to forgive Abby? Or will you instead want to continue this meaningless cycle of revenge? If you do not learn to forgive Abby, you have missed the point of the game. The way Abby turned on the WLF mirrors the way Joel turned on the Fireflies. Joel experienced a moral dilemma. Is he willing to let Ellie die for a chance at developing a vaccine? Or, will he save Ellie (his second daughter) and find his redemption? That happens with Abby, too. Although you have known Lev for two days, you have done extremely crazy things for him. You have overcome your fears because of him, you risked your life for him, you have saved each other’s lives, and you two have a very close bond now. It does not matter the number of days. The quality matters. So now, the WLF is going to murder Lev, a person you have a deep bond with, simply because of the fact she is a Seraphite. You have two choices. Let them cold-bloodedly murder someone you have an extremely close bond with for a superficial reason. Or, save Lev. Both options are not fully justifiable, much like Joel's dilemma in the end. Abby tries to make Isaac understand and was willing to kill herself for Lev, given how she told Isaac to shoot her. However, when Yara shoots Isaac to save Lev, the WLF immediately opens fire on Abby and Lev, giving them little choice but to fight back. Abby lost her humanity when she tortured and murdered Joel. She is looking for an opportunity to redeem herself and to reclaim her humanity, and saving Lev is perfect for that. Abby’s character follows the same character arc as Joel. Ellie has a great character arch. After Joel's death, Ellie becomes blinded by hate and the need for revenge. Throughout the game, you and Ellie see the devastating impacts her thirst for revenge has. When Ellie's bloodlust fades away and she can see what she has done (murdering a pregnant woman, ruining many lives), she collapses. She questions what lengths she is willing to go to seek her revenge. When Abby leaves Ellie and gives her a second chance, Ellie is left miserably defeated. She tries to move on and live a normal life with Dina, but she cannot. Her PTSD nags at her, her inner conflict with Joel never subsides, and Tommy's visit was the last straw. In the end, she hunts down Abby as a desperate attempt to try to fix things. Ellie is broken inside, and she thinks going after Abby will fix that. She cannot imagine Joel without seeing his bloodied face being bashed by a golf club. She is conflicted about her feelings about Joel. She is broken inside and is going after Abby to fix that. When she finally has Abby by the throat, she does not kill her. She views a flashback of Joel that is not his bloodied face being bashed by a golf club. She remembers what Joel sacrificed for her and how she was willing to try to forgive him at the end. At this moment, she lets go of her hate for Abby and realizes that to forgive Joel, she must forgive Abby. The end showcases Ellie finding inner peace and letting Joel go. As much as it does not seem like it, the game is about Ellie. But to show you the devastating impacts of Ellie's quest for revenge, you have to experience Abby's point of view. You have to sympathize with Abby, and not necessarily agree with her reasons, but understand where she is coming from. You have to be willing to forgive and forget. That is a very important test the game makes you take. Abby is trying to reclaim the humanity she lost after brutally killing Joel while Ellie is descending into that inhumanity. The challenge here to Ellie and us is to forgive Abby because she has the same emotional struggles, moral resignations, and repressed aspirations as Ellie and is dealing with that in a more human way than simply avenging her father's death because that did not help her; it only deepened her traumas. That is why after saving Yara and Lev she starts having dreams and not nightmares. Also, by the end of the game you're supposed to realize that Ellie isn't trying to avenge Joel so much for him, but more so because she regrets the way she treated him, and the fact that he dies before she ever gets the chance to properly repair that relationship. She thinks killing everyone responsible will allow her to forgive herself, but in the end, she just finds that she's slipping into darkness and throwing everything else in her life away - pushing away her relationships and putting others in danger. At what point is the cost too high? Abby as a contrast is supposed to show you that revenge is hollow and still leaves you feeling empty inside. Abby literally trashes her relationships in order to train for this revenge crusade, and she drags everyone else into it. Most of them agreed to go seek justice, but then you see the push-back and distancing that occurs after Abby crosses that line of torturing Joel. Abby saves Lev & Yara to clear her own conscious because deep down she does feel guilty - not just for killing Joel, but dragging everyone else into it and pushing people away because she was consumed by vengeance, and everything and everyone else in her life took a backseat while she pursued that goal - revenge was an obsession. She also feels guilty for the things she ends up doing with the WLF, who are a far cry from the Fireflies. The WLF were simply the closest thing to what they had in Salt Lake City with the Fireflies, a similar structure and lifestyle; the WLF are extremely xenophobic and basically end up committing genocide on the Seraphites. By comparison, the Fireflies simply resisted a corrupted military government and were laser-focused on developing a cure for the greater good. By the end, Abby is broken and everyone and everything around her besides just Lev is either destroyed or dead - she loses everything.

Good scene but felt rushed. Imagine if we had a full game of Joel and Ellie again. Ellie starts questioning what happened and at the very end of the game the truth is revealed. Having such an important moment in a 5 minute flashback doesn’t do it justice.

They had multiple flashbacks before this. One in particular saw Ellie begin to uncover evidence of the Fireflies’ failure, being called liars and traitors. Ellie was with them for MAYBE 3 weeks at most, and Marlene likely kept her separated from the others to hide her immunity to keep her protected. I am absolutely convinced that in the second part, the developers definitely should not have returned to the topic that Joel lied to Ellie at the end of the last part. Then everything ended in the final on a powerful note. Yes, Ellie didn't know everything. But she realized that Joel was lying and accepted his lie. The fact that this topic was returned to, the fact that Ellie suddenly wondered what had happened, the fact that she hated Joel for lying, devalues the finale of the last part. Makes it worthless. It would have been a different matter if she had accidentally found out what had happened, but she hadn't told Joel about her discovery, and their relationship wouldn't have soured because of it. And it would highlight to us how important Joel and her relationship with him is to Ellie. Like everything they've been through.

I wish the game left out some of the details like this truth telling scene. Like how it didn’t show what Nora said to Ellie. Instead in this scene, it’s better when Joel is just about to say it it cuts back to present time. Similarly, when Joel later says *SPOILERRR* he wouldve done it all over again if given the chance. That line should’ve been left out because we all know that. These scenes are all implicitly understood. Laying out like this kinda takes away some characters’ depth and complexity.

This is one of the best scenes in this game for sure, cause both characters have their reasoning and thought that they were in the right. Joel wanted to save Ellie's life and it wasn't confirmed whether a vaccine could've realistically been made from her, but at the same time he didn't let Ellie make that choice for herself and he potentially doomed humanity as a result, plus ultimately it led to his death by senselessly killing Abbe's father.
