We need each other. I think that message holds true now more than ever. We need to stand by each other especially when people are grieving and terrified for their lives and for each other. Help make sure that the world knows that black lives matter. Let's prove that what we can do together is far greater than what we can do alone. Let's make a real change. blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/

StoryStreet Amen! I’m sorry that the first response to you was one of hatred and it disgusts me that there are still people like him in our country. It’s kind of ridiculous that I’ve had to explain, to so many white people that whenever they say “All Lives Matter”, their racism shows a little bit more. The matter of the fact is that Japanese people aren’t being MURDERED by White cops over and over again, so no...in the current scope of things, Japanese American lives are not a matter of discussion! There are 5 times as many white people as black people in our country...so with just the last 4 black murders by cops/former cops trying to act like he’s still a cop...I’ve told those white people that if they can point out 20 white people murdered at the hands on cops in 2020...I’ll protest “All Lives Matter” alongside them! ‘Cause the reality is that they won’t find even 4 to match the black deaths, even though white people outnumber black people in our country by almost 5 times.

Indeed. The thing that makes me love this game is Ellie and Joel. I hope they make a game before the events of 2 as either an add-on or separate game entirely. Part 2 in itself I thought was okay, but I felt it lacked something. Something that made me love the first. That “crazy man, and a little girl”

I feel like that window represents nature taking back what it had. The plant growing to the point its going through the window of a house that should be occupied as well as the walls that should be clean and fresh now chipping out explains what type of situation this means. Nature will always win and take over what it once owned. And it did exactly that with the virus as well as the plant. Honestly, the picture of that window and the plant going through it is really beautiful. It shows how no matter what, Time will keep going and that no matter what everything will grow. Whether that’s the people infected or Beattie itself. Humanity will grow and will try to find a way to survive whether in the harshest ways or calmest. Its awesome.

That is always what has hypnotized me about TLOU's art direction. Both games, especially the second one, build off of preexisting landscapes and its reclamation of Earth from humans. It is mesmerizing to me looking at comparisons of TLOU shots versus actual shots they were based off of. It almost gives you a feeling of abandonment and peace simultaneously. It's so eerie but also so beautiful.

I'm under the impression it's clear ellie would have sacrificed herself, especially since joel has to lie because even to him it seems that's true and the general aura of everyone involved believe its true. With the alternative being that ellie just lives in a world that will continue to have rape and murder I find it's not ambiguous whether or not they should do it.
@ThatBisexualOverThere
@ThatBisexualOverThere 3 жыл бұрын
imo, it’s not supposed to be ambiguous, Joel makes an entirely selfish decision and the consequences is that no cure could ever be made. Ellie dying **might** have led to a cure or maybe it was a certainty, but it doesn’t matter cuz Joel’s selfish decision made it impossible.
@coletrainhetrick

@@ThatBisexualOverThere I've always thought it was strange why people are so hung ho on wanting to kill abby. It's cleartthat most people side with joel when the story didnt want you to and it feels like it led everyone to thinking it was a "betrayal" to the fans when in reality most people who thought they were fans of the first never actually were. You have people trying to justify why joel was right rather than looking at the most important problem: not even joel thinks what he was doing was good.

Okay but you have to think about this as well. And for defense, I want to bring up I Am Legend (The Book, not the Movie), because it's obvious that the creators learned nothing from the 2nd part by doing what they did. You see, the character Robert Neville is in this search for a cure, and that's what we the readers believe is the whole plot: "the cure" will save the world. But when reading, you are suppose to start and see that ship probably has now sailed. I mean, even if there is a tiny percentage of the population still alive, and can immunize all the survivors, what about the vampires (Dark-seekers in the film)? Sure, they only come out at night, but even then, they will f*** s*** up. And perhaps it's possible that they cure the vampires, but to cure that many of them? How are they going to restrain all of them so they don't go ape-s***? And what happens to a vampire once they are cure? You think they going to be turned back into human and be all chill? OR ARE THEY GOING TO LOSE THEIR MINDS WHEN THEY REALIZE THAT THEY'VE SPENT YEARS RUNNING AROUND KILLING AND EATING PEOPLE FOR SEVERAL YEARS? Honestly, if you are one of them, you have to think about the consequences that will occur because you think you're gonna be all right after what you just went through. Especially since probably the humans have already killed about half of those infected. You see in the book, in the 3rd act, Robert meets Ruth (she's called Anna in the movie, and she has no son, FYI *SPOILERS*), who happens to be infected, except this time, like Ellie in Last OF Us, didn't turn into one of the creatures. She says their are more of just like her who are intelligent and have formed a society, even making medical advances to prevent them from getting killed from the virus. Now throughout the story, it doesn't focus on the cure, but more on how the virus has continued to change the world. Making the hope for a cure sound meaningless. But how does this affect the rest of the story? SPOILER ALERT When Robert learns from Ruth of this new way to fight the virus, he asks to join Ruth. But then suddenly, the vampires arrive and capture and imprison him. When Robert asks Ruth, who is not very fazed by this, what is going on, she tells him that she planned this and that they're not letting him go because for over the past few years he's been systematically killing, experimenting, and hunting them down. So they're not going to simply be kind to him. Ruth even mentions that it was he who killed her husband. She tells him that this "new society" has now made their judgement and order him to be executed. Robert is now left in despair and lost. So Ruth decides to show mercy on him and offers him suicide pills so his death is less suffering. Robert asks her to promise and not let this new generation be heartless, which she says, "I'll try.". And in the closing passage Robert watches as he sees the vampires now watching him with faces of hate and a want to kill him and decides that he will be "legend", just like how the vampires were to humans, as the monster that killed many of them. HE IS THEIR LEGEND. And that's what THE LAST OF US PART 2 failed to learn. There is no cure. Because THEY ARE THE LAST. There is no escaping what the population has become. We even get a point of view on how in the first, how killing turns Joel or any survivor into wat they are. THIS IS WHAT THE NEW WORLD IS. You have to kill to survive, whether you're human or infected.

@@osmanyousif7849 I'm not sure why you wrote this. You bring up an entirely different piece of fiction as if it explains why its a problem in the last of us. Do you use this argument to justify covid? You wrote so much when all you had to say was you thought last of us 1 sucked.

The story is about nothing. It oozes with pompous arrogance and I barely got through the whole thing. I'm not a writer but I have thought about how much better it could have been and even had a story for a 3rd. The original game is a masterpiece . My favorite game of all time. Please make a video about Part II, regardless if you agree or not. I'm very interested.

Bro the second story has so much more to it, it’s not just taking a girl to the hospital anymore, part 2 is more about forgiveness and not everything is gonna go your way in a zombie infested world, it’s also about how your actions have consequences, just like bill said in part 1 “taking care of someone is only good for one thing, getting you killed”, and by the time Joel was a changed man just like he was at the end of part 2, his actions already caught up to him. It’s also about how far you will go until it’s too much and the cycle of violence never stops

(Sort of Part 2 Spoliers) I'd really like to hear your opinion on Part 2. Personally even though I would agree that it is too long and flawed in a couple ways, the extra context it gives to the world just enhances even the first game. Like the flashbacks to the other POV from the firefly hospital. Of how legitimately distraught Marlene was talking to the doctor, that you kill as Joel, when he said Ellie wouldn't survive the operation. The game/script needed a few passes on the cutting floor by about 5 hours and maybe a reorder of the events but I still loved playing it.

Great job pulling the game's themes together and exploring what makes it resonate even after countless playthroughs and seven years. I agree with your core analysis of Joel's motives at the end of the game, but I think he had another reason besides self-interest for lying to Ellie. I think he wanted to shield Ellie from any guilt so that she could enjoy her fresh start at Jackson. I think it was a mistake on his part because frankly, he could have made a good argument that gambling her life on less than a sure thing with an organization that has not exactly impressed with their competence made no sense. As you pointed out even if they succeeded, how would they mass produce and distribute it? Would everybody qualify or would there be a fight to control who gets it? Is a group like David's cannibals eligible or would there be a purity test in which you had to prove that you were only somewhat bad and not a total psycho? Also, Ellie clearly did not know what she was heading into. Right after Joel asks her if she wants to continue and she says yes, it all can't be for nothing, she asks if it will hurt and Joel tries to reassure that it will probably be relatively routine like taking blood. Ellie clearly expects to survive, because she says after the Fireflies are done they can go anywhere Joel wants. The final proof that she agreed with Joel's decision, but not his lying to her would be that she did not seek to go back once she confirmed the truth over time. Instead, it led to a breach of trust, which you alluded to that will likely play out as part of the tension between them in the second game. I can't wait for TLOU Part 2 and the many complex and morally ambiguous choices to experience and discuss.

I never considered that "okay" as Ellie believing Joel, she just doesn't look like she believed. I always thought that it is the other way around, that she figured out the rough idea of what happened in the hospital. Also the scene happens some time after the event. So what I think happend is that she figured out what happened and thought about what outcome would she preferred, but couldn't find an answer, got herself a bit lost. That's why she asks Joel again. And after a bit of hesitation he answered. And that "okay" was more about accepting what happened then about accepting what Joel said happened

No I think it was her actively choosing to place her trust in Joel. She doesn't know what happened at the hospital and she's suspicious of Joel, but she decides to put that aside and trust Joel based on an implicit trust. Not because his story makes sense or because she wants to believe it, but because Joel is telling it to her and she wants to believe him

This game is my favourite game ever. The characters of Joel and Ellie connected with me in a way I never expected to. Joel is a very relatable character to me. I’m not a father I’m closer to Ellie’s age than Joel’s. But I relate to his feeling of isolation and I relate to how hard it is for him to open up to people and talk to people. Joel embodies a lot of my positive and negative traits. He is closed of but that’s not a good thing like all the people who talk about that sigma male nonsense. Being closer of isn’t some great thing having autism and finding it extremely hard to talk to people except a select few is really fucking hard. Joel and my situations are very different and it has taken 5 playthroughs countless video essays and a lot of introspection for me to realise this. I’m also naturally cynical and that is hard for me to shake off. I’ve gotten a lot better with trying to see the good side of people and just being more positive in general. Seeing Joel’s story was a huge part of that. I also agree with his decision to save Ellie. I hate to admit it but I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I would do anything to protect my brother. However on my most recent play through I was finally able to see how wrong and monstrous Joel’s decision was even though I understand it on a very deep level. Theirs a lot more that I could talk about. Ellie, the music, the graphics, the sound design, the art design, the way it merges gameplay with story but this guy says it way better than I ever could. When I reached the ending I fucking cried and I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m not trying to oversell this game or anything I’m just expressing my genuine reaction. I don’t cry often. I don’t feel overwhelming sadness or sometimes joy very often. I don’t know why. People say how they cried during the end of Rdr2 but when I finished that I felt sadness deep inside but I didn’t cry. The raw emotion of that ending. It hit me like a freight train. I wish Joel didn’t lie to Ellie. Also when you enter the surgery room I killed all the doctors. I didn’t even think about it. It was a raw instinct and I imagine that’s how the decision was for Joel. Whenever I kill someone in games I always feel very bad because even though they are not real I still see them as a person with real emotions and personalities. To me that’s a testament of how good this games writing is. That final shot and line zooming in on Ellie’s face. All the subtle facial expressions and then that “Okay”. To me that okay is just acceptance. Not her believing the lie. Ellie is smarter than many people her age and I don’t think she would even believe Joel’s lie for a second. She just accepted that their relationship will never be the same again. That deep trust Ellie had in Joel was shattered forever but she loves him to much so she just goes along with it. That hit me so hard. This game is very personal to me and it is still my favourite game of all time and my favourite story of all time. Joel is my favourite character and Ellie is my second favourite character. If anyone at all reads this I want you to know. To me this isn’t just a game. It’s a deeply heart breaking but still beautiful game that transcends the medium of gaming and should be talked about in discussions of the greatest stories of all time.

Uncharted 4 will definitely happen. And with my current urge to replay the series, it may be pretty soon. Red Dead 2 is a beast of a thing, though. I absolutely adore it and certainly want to cover it, but it would be a really big project. I have no idea when I'll get to it.

I’ll be curious to see what you think of TLOU 2 as your point about tomb raider telling a different story in cutscene vs gameplay smacks very much of part 2. Ellie shows a massive struggle to kill someone who (in my opinion) deserves it in cutscenes, but has no trouble blowing npc’s away in gameplay with ease.

This was an awesome essay and your discussion on the ending is exactly why (unpopular opinion) I hate inFAMOUS 2’s ending, that game at the end gave a moral dilemma and immediately made the endings karmic exclusive...HOW DO YOU DO THAT?! It doesn’t help that if you pick evil karma play through at the first karma choice, Cole acts so mustache twirly evil, given that the good karma path is indeed canon and that the “bad” ending was originally canon and even at that ending, even with lines of dialogue during said ending like “they know they’re about to die” in such a mustache twirly tone, he acts like nothing like he was in canon to the first game

"a totally defenseless doctor" I'm sorry but did you not see the scalpel in the docs hand, sure Joel didn't need to kill him and could've easily disarmed him, but that doctor sure as hell wasn't defenseless, he was ready to attack (a pathetic attempt but ready nonetheless)

16:53 I disagree with your assessment of Tess. Tess was the only person Joel had left and her death greatly impacted him. Obviously he had a much deeper bond with Ellie. But to say Joel and Tess were nothing more than partners is an understatement if I must say. I think Joel and Bills relationship is a lot more like what you were describing for Tess.
@johnjoseph6874
@johnjoseph6874 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think he meant that Joel and Tess didn’t have of a relationship. It’s just that if Joel didn’t need Tess for smuggling reasons, he wouldn’t have got close to her in the first place. Sure, they did grow closer during their time together and maybe even wanted to start something together, but for the most part, what brought them together and kept them together was business. At least that’s the case for Joel, sadly maybe not for Tess.
