I liked the detail when Joel tells Ellie the fungus got spread through food items like bread, flower, and stops for a second when he says pancake mix, because he and Sarah were out of pancake mix the day of the outbreak. It’s a reflection on how close they were to being infected too. It was a nice reference to the opening of the first episode.

My favorite part about this episode was Bill’s note to Joel. @@minafrota6124 Well, first, Ellie never said she played MK2, she heard about it. Second, just because 5.56 was widely produced, doesnt mean its easy to come across in a apocalypse. Third, Frank and Bill added so much more weight for Joel. Knowing how hardened and closed off Joel is, we got to see two peole he had some kind of relationship with, live through them to get a sense of how the world was, and ultimately, through Bill's letter, added some motivation to Joel to protect Tess. Seeing as how he failed, now he has a bit of hope that Ellie may be legit, and now has more reason to keep her safe. How about you try looking at some things more positively, and you may be surprised what you can see.

Was it? I honestly felt it was incredibly wholesome and the opposite of heartbreaking. Bill was a grumpy survivalist who hated the world when it was just getting worse, yet somehow managed to save the one man who could make his life better. They got to live relatively normal lives together through better or worse. I was worried Frank would die leaving bill to be alone. But they both survive long enough to become old and rather than help Frank die and live alone, he decides it's best to go with each other. I honestly can't think of a happier ending, especially in an apocalypse. What's more wholesome and romantic than dying peacefully with your partner/soulmate? Amazing episode

@@92brunod In the game they literally only meet him once and it's so joel can call in a favor and obtain a car. His only purpose to the overall story is to get them a car and a few weapons. @@92brunod a direct meeting of the two in the present timeline was unnecessary. We saw Bill interact with Joel in the past, finally come to respect him when Joel proved he offered value to Bill & Frank, and we finally got a full circle connection of just who was sending the coded radio messages to Joel’s apartment. We got a much more fleshed out universe & a nearly movie-length episode documenting a lore-poor section of the games that was far more interesting than the shootemup in the high school with a first boss battle.

@@Gregor_Von_DOOM ehh not really, Bill was supposed to show the negative side of living just to survive. He closed himself to everything and everyone causing his significant other to feel trapped and ultimately causing his death. One thing I loved about this episode was that in the game 99% of the reason Bill was so furious at everything was that Frank had killed himself, “abandoning” him. The Bill we saw in the game had opened up to exactly one person in twenty years, and felt backstabbed by that only trust he’d given up. When I saw Frank sick in the last time jump I instantly thought “oh fuck he’s gonna kill himself and all of Bill’s progress in the last twenty years is gonna break apart…” and then it didn’t. It reminded me of the shift in episode one, where a car ALMOST hits them, then a plane crashes. It feels like the show changes a small thing in a way that makes people who played the game sure what will happen until the last second. Not only do they deliver a great story for people who never played the game, but if you’ve played it and feel like you already know the story, there’s these little twists that make you engage as much as a first time viewer

I disagree. I've always assumed the last of us to be a DARK story, but we received the total opposite in this episode. Its ok to have happy stories but Bill and Frank's story could have had more dimensions like the fact that in the game, Frank is lured away from bill becouse of his toxic nature and gets bit almost instantly after leaving Bill's safety. No to mntion, we miss the passive/agressive interactions with Bill and Ellie, the cool upsidedown joel scene, and the 'shocking' reveal of Frank's suicide. Overall its a good episode but they were not true to their word when they said they'll keep it fairly original to the source as this was a complete 180.

The trade off was we didn’t get to see Ellie and Bill exchange their original banter that most of us take as key memories in the game. Honestly, this was a terrible episode. First, when did Ellie ever play Mortal Kombat? That line seemed odd as she was born in the post-apocalypse. Second, what survivalist wouldn't have semi-automatic rifles? How could the U.S. be low on 5.56mm rounds? They would be the most common rifle rounds around. I don't care that Frank and Bill were in a relationship, this was a spin-off character drama that contributed nothing to the plot of the story. It wasn't sad, it was just a quick documentary of their life, everyone dies. Terrible episode.

@alistairt7544 Жыл бұрын
@@gleammm.k To each their own. Some will not like it, some will love it. I personally found it beautiful, even as an avid fan of the game. Sure, I missed the action packed, non-stop chase and killing in Bill's town, finding our first bloater in the school, and really funny banter between Ellie and Bill had, etc., but I also appreciated the take they did on Bill and Frank's life, which felt more human, and a nice touch on an already grim and awful world they live in. Not every human story in a post-apocalyptic world is going to be awful and bad. Humans are survivors, resilient, social beings, who will find joy and happiness amidst all the pain and sorrow in the world. And this was a testament of that. The game's story telling is a reflection of the different pacing and focus on the game, hence all these characters/npcs just come and go, but as a tv show, they can have more flexibility in focusing on actual storytelling, and further giving people and the world more details and depth. There's gonna be more episodes, and the story gets worse, so having this slice of positive human story is a good addition. In the end of the ep, it actually helped Joel process his own grief and feelings about Tess, and his purpose on accompanying Ellie to their destination. Joel in the game realised he didn't want to become alone, nihilistic, bitter, and misanthropic like Bill, which helped him realise he needed to help Ellie and open up more to her. In the show, Bill helped Joel realise his purpose and his goal, learning from Bill's experience and life. Both outcomes and realisations diverge to basically the same sentiment and idea. So it wasn't really a waste of an episode.

Then cut too Ellie and Joel arriving and Bill comes out yelling at Joel to leave and we can have that scene of Ellie and Bill meeting. Joel then tells Bill the situation with Ellie and what happened to Tess after hearing what happened to Tess. Bill agrees to help Joel get the truck ready to go but they have to get a battery for it and head to the school to get it and come across some infected. They get the battery and Joel says he’s sorry about what happened to Frank and Bill replies get the f**k out my town and episode ends. I think that would have been better. Some people claim it wasn't the Last of Us but I politely disagree. What I loved about the game is that you get to pick up notes, letters, and snippets of people's lives pre and post-apocalyptic times. It added so much to the world of the the Last of Us, cause the world is not only revolving to killing the infected and surviving another day. There were people who lived, thrived, had emotional connections, and lived life amidst all the pain and sorrow, and also met their demise and many tragedies occurred. The game was action-packed, but cause that was the nature of the video game. It wasn't a story-based game, so it's not fair to compare an action-based game with great story, to a television adaptation. This is a tv show were they offer better storytelling, depth, details, and have characters have more impact on the viewers and on the main character/s, all helping create this vast world these characters live in.

IMO the only negative thing about the episode is that it came too early in the season. I think the series needed a full episode of Joel and Ellie's relationship before an episode focusing on two side characters. Yes, I understand the connection they were making. Yes, I know nothing of importance happens (ingme) between Tess & Bills town and this probably won't be a problem when I binge watching the season on the re-watch. But now we're 1/3 of the episodes in and I'm "missing" the Ellie & Joel dynamic that made the heart of the game.

Like the beginning of the episode, Joel refused to talk to ellie besides quick lines. But by the end he was talking more, explaining things, joking around in the car, plus he didn't want her to see the mass grave. In the game Bill symbolizes what Joel will become if he refuses to let ppl in, in the show he represents who Joel can be if he does, to die fulfilled that he saved the one person in the whole shitty world he cares about.

Her "friend" played, and described it to her, in a scene where Ellie closes her eyes and pretends like she's playing the game on a broken arcade machine. And I mean... It's 20 years... Honestly, my biggest complaint about this episode is tone dissonance. The story of Bill and Frank here was beautiful, tender, and rather optimistic, they got not only a happy ending when nobody else gets one, but also a happy beginning and middle too when you think about it. Considering what I know about the world of TLOU and the tone of the story, the tone and message set by this episode will feel reeeeally out of place if they follow the game's story from now on. One of the most enticing things about TLOU is the imperfections of the characters and all their relationships, and I find that the more bitter, imperfect ending to Bill and Frank's story suit TLOU better. But let's see how the rest of the story is gonna be adapted, all I know right now is, if they follow the story and tone of the games, specially the second game in the second season, this whole episode is gonna feel completely out of place.

I kind of agree, at first when I finished the episode I thought it was more like a really good short film rather than an episode that belonged in the series. After thinking about it more though, I realized that the deviation from the game does serve as both a parallel from the game and to the main narrative of Joel and Elie themselves. In the game, Bill is alive but only for the sake of surviving, whereas in the show he lives for and dies for love. The same could be said for Joel’s newfound purpose as the game goes along, as he lets his guard down for the first time in decades because he’s found a reason to live again rather than just surviving with no end in sight
@ArchKnight47

I mean they both died through suicide so they kind of didn't get the "happy" ending in the grand scheme of things. The point of this episode is basically trying to convey the theme of the whole show: to find happiness and love in the most depressing of times.
@NomastiAfricanWarlord
@NomastiAfricanWarlord Жыл бұрын
I actually really liked it. One of the complaints I often have about post-apocalypse stories (and just grimdark stories in general) is how these stories feel obligated to make all of their characters miserable. It's as if they're allergic to giving characters long-term happiness of any kind. When characters are happy, it's just to set them up to be miserable later. It actually makes these stories less engaging and more predictable. It's like watching the reverse version of a saturday cartoon or a sitcom. Instead of knowing "everything is going to work out in the end" it's "I know things are going to go to shit." The best stories are ones that know how to mix up good and happy endings to stories. It keeps the audience more engaged because you don't know where the writer is going to take things. They aren't obligated by audience expectations or "tone" to shift a story into one particular category or the other. In essence, tone dissonance is not an inherently bad thing. As a side story, I really appreciated that this plot line sort of show that it is actually possible to live a decent life in the apocalypse. Not just for a short while, from beginning to end. This is such an absurdly rare type of story in apocalypse media even though it really shouldn't be. It sort of gives hope for the main characters. We've seen that it possible for both good and bad outcomes to happen and that's what makes audiences engaged.

They could have covered this story without taking up an hour while still having areas from the game. It felt like a Greg Nicotero directed filler episode of The Walking Dead. The only reason it's getting so much praise is because of the LGBT relationship. The problem wasn't that, it was what they removed from the game to tell this story. Pivotal Joel and Ellie bonding moments. Joel getting caught in Bills trap. Ellie helping steer the car to escape while Joel and Bill pushed before it started. All of the action oriented moments were gone and they really have not developed Joel and Ellie yet. It's through these encounters that they really start to bond ending in the drive to the next city where Joel begins opening up to her. Here it was all brushed over to focus on a side story that was a longer version of the opening montage from UP. The show has only had one encounter with clickers so far and this could have been an area to add more set pieces but they went with this art house love story and lingered on every detail when I just wanted to get back to the main story. There's no way other groups wouldn't have found that town in all the time they were there. Bill and Frank had more screen time than Joel and Ellie have together alone. Next week should improve but I wouldn't rewatch this.

@Shockked don't feel bad for me friend... I'm the one who should pith a fool who says something like this to a stranger. Think about maybe growing up. Or not... don't care

Bill: Because of the implication... Joel: Oh, uh... okay. You had me going there for the first part, the second half kinda threw me. Bill: Well dude, dude, think about it: he's out in the middle of nowhere with some dude he barely knows. You know, he looks around and what does he see? Nothin' but deserted ruins and zombies. "Ahh, there's nowhere for me to run. What am I gonna do, say 'no'?" Joel: Okay. That... that seems really dark. Bill : Nah, no it's not dark. You're misunderstanding me, bro. Joel: I'm-I think I am. Bill: Yeah, you are, because if Frank said "no" then the answer obviously is "no"... Joel: No, right. Bill: But the thing is he's not gonna say "no", he would never say "no" because of the implication. Joel: ...Now you've said that word "implication" a couple of times. Wha-what implication? Bill: The implication that things might go wrong for him if he refuses to sleep with me. Now, not that things are gonna go wrong for him but he's thinkin' that they will. Joel: But it sounds like he doesn't wanna have sex with you... Bill: Why aren't you understanding this? He-he doesn't know if he wants to have sex with me. That's not the issue... Joel: Are you gonna hurt Frank? Bill: I'm not gonna hurt this man! Why would I ever hurt this man? I feel like you're not getting this at all! Joel: I'm not getting it. Bill: Goddamn. [notices Tess staring at them] Bill: Well don't you look at me like that, you certainly wouldn't be in any danger. Joel: So he is in danger! Bill: No one's in any danger!

That isn't what happened in the show and you know it. This shit is exhausting.

@@casperaaron5530 oh shut up you whining bore, exhausting? No one asked you to do or say anything, so mind your bysiness if you're tired. Look, if this was a straight dude and a woman fell into his trap hole, you'd all be up in arms saying he manipulated her etc. You know what's funny, why is it that the only two gay people within proximity always fall in love with each other? Same in games, same in movies there's always just two and they're placed together for the amusement of people who like forcing fake relationships for falsified morale superiority. The so called love in this episode was about as realistic as it was between those two losers in 50 shades. The game was a for more realistic depiction of a forced relationship between two people trapped together when society falls apart.

I loved seeing the little detail of bill and Frank’s house together. At the end stretch, the house is full of plants and painting with tacky furniture. Bill opened his heart and it was beautiful and heartbreaking to watch.
