No matter how many times you see it, you never get used to it. This is such a heartbreaking story that was switched up a bit and made it even SADDER so it hit that much more. There is a lot to unpack here and quite a few parallels for Ellie and Joel but I DON'T WANNA SPOIL TOO MUCH... Just.... prepare... and have your tissues.
Thank you so much everyone, I hope you enjoy 🥰

"how are Ellie and Joel not broken because of this" But they are Ellie's deadpan "which way is west" and "you coming?" shows she's internalized her pain and refuses to let it out. She's becoming more and more like the way Joel was at the very start of their journey together. Cold, distant. And that'll only get worse. Joel on the other hand is the opposite, he's slowly becoming more and more open, more capable of love. It's why, despite him still having his walls quite high, he took the time to dig the graves and stands there for a moment, his face with an expression of sorrow. Compare that to how Tess died. Joel just walking off while Ellie stood still, wiping her tears, in episode 2. It's written very well

Mmhmm. I think episode 3 showed Joel in this way. He wanted to get away from Ellie when he read that letter from Bill, he wanted space.. because he felt responsible. This time it's opposite. Ellie feels almost responsible for Sam, and wants space, wants to even be away from Joel for a bit. This world has beat them down, and made them pretty broken.. but they still can only move on..
@USMCSniperWolf
@USMCSniperWolf Жыл бұрын
You asked how Joel and Ellie aren't broken by that, but they are. Even with everything they've been through, they're still broken by loss, even involving people they met just a day ago. Joel stands there looking over Henry and Sam's graves as Ellie walks on because he's reminded of Sarah, of Ellie, and how that is going to be them. He knows it's going to happen at some point and the realization of that numbs him. Ellie on the other hand, you can tell she's being broken by it because of how she acts. She writes "I'm sorry" and places it over Sam's grave then just wants to get the hell out of there. She even commands Joel, and Joel doesn't even flinch because he knows what Ellie's going through which just makes this even more heartbreaking.

I'm glad someone else picked up on this. It's as if their characters have switched. Her walls are coming up, and his are coming down. She's pretty much done with all this, and just wants to be done. It's not "exciting" anymore.

also worth remembering that it's a total mirror to the end of the Tess episode's shot, with Joel somewhat coldly walking on and Ellie standing there. Blows my mind how well they're showing the progression of these characters, honestly even surpassing the game.

It’s very interesting. On the show’s official podcast, the creators were talking about how Joel buried Henry & Sam mostly for Ellie. That he didn’t really care about burials. But he did it because he cared about Ellie, that she’s no longer just cargo.
@Saphthings

There's something unsettling in realizing that Sam was just sitting there because he's deaf. An infected listens for their prey. Even if he ever went to go full on clicker he couldn't. Ellie broke her promise and fell asleep, so he was just sitting there. Waiting, screaming from the inside. As his brain was slowly eaten away. And until someone touched him, or came in his view, he would sit there forever. And when Ellie touched him, Sam saw his own body attack her. Instead of becoming the superhero he always wanted to be. He became a monster, crying for his brother to help. He didn't even hear the shot. Just his vision slowly fading to black. He spent all night trying not to fall asleep. Then suddenly his eyes were slowly closing, afraid of what would happen once he woke up, but he never did. Bill and Frank's story was sad, in a stoic kind of way, but just like Bill said at the end, it wasn't tragic. They'd lived a full life. Here Sam and Henry had hope, a chance, and a whole life ahead of them. Henry was so good that he protected Ellie before even realizing what he was doing. It was instinctual. That comes from deep inside. His first kill. But a little like Kathleen said, this kind of goodness, makes it hard to live in such a tragic world.

@@Phelddagrif1998 Sorry if I paste it too often. I just watch lots of reactions and figure it's not like I'm gonna type something different each time : ) I'm glad you follow my train of thought, like you, after watching so many reactions, certain things click. I think we felt the feeling of what I wrote. That feeling right before Henry is shot was in our guts. And this is the genius of the director of this series, I've come to realize later that it's shot, scored, and lit in a way that we go through the same thing Henry does. Everything happens so fast, so aggressively, that we "feel" it before we can name it or organize our thoughts. So that by the funeral part we're numb, just like Ellie. Then when we sort out our feeling of why we felt the we felt, or see it written, there's a moment of clarity. We understand the layers of Ellie betraying her promise. While Sam is sitting there everything is fine in the world. We don't know yet whether he's cured. He's sitting and not attacking. So maybe... we can just not approach him. While we don't move, there's no pain. Every step Ellie takes is a step that makes it that fantasy fade away, she might have broken her promise, he might have turned into his worst nightmare. Should we take another step? But we have to. What if everythings fine. If everythings fine we (Ellie) didn't betray him, we saved him. It's like that feeling when you overslept, or your alarm didn't go off, and your stomach drops while you frantically grab your phone to see what time it is. Where you promise the world to whatever we have to that if just this time, if this once, we're fine, we'd do anything. And then you look at the time, and you're not late for work, or school, or whatever it was. You sink back in bed with the most wonderful feeling of relief. Or you're late. Oh god you're going to have to call your work, to call your school, to lie or to be honest, and it's so much you freeze for a little... wishing things were different. That brief moment, where both realities exist, and you're grabbing your phone or however you tell the time, your heart feels like it stops. Time stops. They managed to materialize that same feeling into one scene. It's so many thoughts and feelings at the same time that all we feel is white noise. And then suddenly bam, he's dead, before we even thought a single clear thought. The scene is constructed beautifully to highlight that the things we find the most beautiful in the world, flowers, snowflakes, a child in his superhero mask. Are also often the most fragile.

Neil Druckmann's explantion for the Bloaters was that basically for most people the Cordyceps eventually makes them go somewhere and die to spread the fungus (in the game with spores, in the show with the tendrils/roots underground.) But Bloaters are people who were so physically strong before getting infected that instead of killing them, the Cordyceps just keeps growing and taking over their body more and more until they become completely covered in it, essentially forming a protective shell.

I dont agree. At the end, Ellie moves off first ...she wants to get to the fireflies so they can make the cure and no more people like Sam have to die. That's the fuel for her stoicism. It's not hardness, it's compassion.
@82Jaster
@82Jaster Жыл бұрын
@@Martyntd5 There's definitely compassion there because she does want to help. But her not allowing herself to grieve is hardening her in a way that she probably doesn't even realize. We've seen how she wants to put on a brave face in front of Joel. That was really first shown in Episode 4 when she starts crying as Joel kills Bryan, but then immediately wipes away her tears when she hears his voice, and is quick to tell him that she's good. The cost of that brave face is that she's bottling up some really raw emotions.

I love how people when part 2 came out were like "Ellie wouldn't do what she's doing, she's not that person". Yeah, people change, she became the man who raised her the most, who taught her the most. She's an impressionable young teenager, and Joel has saved her life many times, she's learned from him already in this show how to survive, pushing away emotions and keeping on going forward, to let it all out in moments of rage and violence. Made sense in the game and in the show...and unfortunately for Ellie, it's not going to get any easier this season.

@@hodlsats It’s a really common reaction to disabled kids-a kind of pity mixed with the sense that they’re more innocent and sweet than other children. Although it usually has good intentions and kind-hearted people behind it, that perception is inaccurate and doesn’t make room for us to be understood as full, complex human beings-even as children. One thing I like about this show is that it hasn’t treated disability as some sort of advantage. And it illustrates accommodation (in this case sign language) as something good for everyone.

My reaction was some of the deepest emotional pain I've felt when watching something fictional in three years. The last time I hit that rock bottom, was when I was playing Part II and Abby showed up in the theater and did... some terrible things. I always felt that Sam and Henry's death was just somewhat more powerful than Sarah's, and to see it in live-action still hurts like a son of a b*ch. To kill your own little brother like that, who is 8 years old, who you swore to protect with everything, and that being your FIRST KILL. That is so unbelievably messed up, as beautifully executed as it was. This episode was masterful.

FYI all of those infected in the underground tunnels were clickers. They were forced underground 15 years ago, and then pushed further into remote tunnels by FEDRA at least three years ago if Henry had good info which it seems his info was partially correct (or the FEDRA people were only half right, or only half truthful). But even the newest infected would be over three years old, more than enough time to turn into a clicker. That’s why the bloater was able to develop also, in a tight enclosed space, over long periods of time.

You're right when you say that such a small child went through so much, but that also makes the story kind of beautiful. I mean, yes, it ended tragically, but it always ends tragically--the people we love, who love us, always die; zombie apocalypse or not. But the fact that Henry would rather die with his brother than to keep on going on with Joel and Ellie to Wyoming, where he would arguably have a better life than he's ever known, means that he wouldn't trade even the worst day he had with Sam, for a lifetime as a free man living his best life without him--even if it means that the only life he ever gets to experience is one where he goes to bed hungry every night, tries to stay one step ahead of people trying to kill him, and has to sleep at night knowing all the terrible things he's done. I think that's a beautiful, and timely, message, especially for a generation like ours that has a really warped sense of what is "essential" to our survival. There are so many things we never needed before that in the last 5 to 10 years we've convinced ourselves we can't live without, like reliable wifi, social media and amazon. Life can be beautiful, even if all you have is 10 cans of food and a couple pounds of jerky....as long as you have the only thing that's truly essential in life....the people you love.

Melanie Lynskie is the best character. I can watch her scenes over and over. She steals every scene she’s in. She’s also great in “YELLOW JACKETS,” “CANDY,” “I DONT FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE.” Oh and “HEAVENLY CREATURES” with Kate Winslet.

The Actor who played Perry, was the voice actor for Tommy in the video game.

I'm starting to believe that of all the ways Tommy could die in the game, his voice actor Jeffrey Pierce personally asked for a death by bloater when he got cast as new character Perry in the HBO adaptation.

@@ChibiHoshiDragon Of course I watched the reaction video from start to end. And as someone who never played the game, I've only started to learn which voice actors got cast in the TV series as other characters, and observe that fans of both versions can't help connecting said actors to their initial voice roles (21:27 "Tommy, NOOO!! TOMMEEEEEEEEE - Iknowyou'renotTommybutyousoundlikeTommy...") All I'm suggesting was that Kansas City (in lieu of Pittsburgh) was a way of bringing a bloater on screen to kick ass, and Perry's manner of death wasn't written into the script for nothing.

The actress who plays Kathleen also plays one of the evil step sisters in the movie Ever After; which happens to be IMO, the best adaptation. She’s amazing in it.

To answer some questions: Clickers are infected that have been around for about a year. Blisters are infected that have been around for twenty years. This is at least in the games.

Ellie is basically coping right now by following what Tess said. "Save who you can save." She couldn't save Sam, but she still might be able to save countless others. All she can focus on is getting to that lab, and figuring out the cure.

So I won't lie to you... when Ellie tried to heal Sam.. a part of me was hoping.. in some small way, that it would work, that the show would change.. and Henry and Sam would come with Joel and Ellie for more of the show.. but I guess it hits harder and affects Ellie and Joel more this way. :(

still cant believe how much they have managed to one up the game consistantly in terms of emotions, first bill and frank who were pretty much nobody in the game and now they have made this ending so much more brutal and harrowing, just ellies wimper alone makes it better than the game

I'd like to learn more about the young blond actress they got to play the child clicker. Her part was very well choreographed. No apologies are needed for crying. I cried too. I'm sure most did. I needed time to compose my feelings as well. I think this world needs more people like us rather than people that don't have those reactions. Otherwise... we lose. That split-second yelp/scream Ellie did just as Henry shot himself, that is when I lost it. Bella deserves an award just for her performance in this episode alone, There were so many times I literally wanted to give her a hug and comfort her. yet still she has her little 'Ellie' attitude.

Ellie is absolutely BROKEN by the deaths of Sam and Henry. I. The show she is just masking. She doesn’t want to address her emotions so she just says “let’s go.” But you see her true feelings in her last note to Sam 😢

I like that the changes on this episode still mirror the game. Both the game and the show have Henry make a questionable decision to protect Sam. While in the game the decision was to leave Joel to die so Sam's life wouldn't be at risk, in the show Henry sells Kathleen's brother out to cure Sam's illness. The question is still the same: "If you were in Henry's shoes, would you have done things differently?" The difference is that Joel let's it slide because he recognizes he would have done the same, while Kathleen is out for revenge regardless of what she would've done.

6:20 "He looks like his older brother" I only know this because I watched YOU play THIS GAME: YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT! BTW, I love you and your work here on YT. I was beyond shocked when it happened in YOUR playthrough. In this, it was very sad, but knowing it was coming took some of the sting out of it. Still, real people playing it out was really something.
