This is a stage 4 infection and they are called Bloaters...The reason why he was so big is because he/she was infected a long time ago...probably around 2003..when the pandemic started...in the game if the infected live for a long time the bloat up, are really strong and are much MUCH!!! harder to kill...hence the name bloaters

Fun fact: Adam Basil, the actor who played the Bloater in this Episode is 6'6 Foot Tall (1.95 cm), and the full Bloater suit weight is at least 80 Pounds (40 Kg).

Did you know the guy who plays the guy who is always with Kathleen (big guy with the beard) is played by Jefferey Pierce who played Tommy in the Last of us video game. Edit: I just found out that character’s name is Perry.

This was the episode that got me emotional. If you've ever had to look out for younger siblings you get it. I knew what was coming and it was still a punch to the gut. For me, this is the best episode so far bar none. This is a huge turning point for Ellie, you can see the determination on her face. She's finally starting to realize how important she could potentially be to humanity and that resolve will play heavily into the story moving forward.

Nice reaction, Addie. I just watched this episode before watching the Super Bowl and enjoyed it. It was very sweet to see Ellie & Sam bond with each other, only for Sam to get infected and for Henry to shoot him and himself afterwards. This episode was the most heartbreaking since episode 3. And props to gymnist Skye Cowton for playing that clicker in the Blue's Clues t-shirt.

Fight the infected. Fear the living. Kathleen is worse than the Clickers(episode 2) and Bloaters(this episode) From the last episode and from now on, Joel is pretty much back into Dad mode. Sunday will be back here before we know it for the next episode. Take care, Addie!!

They keep saying that the sniper was a bad shot. My two cents is that the sniper saw them and radioed Kathleen. She likely told him to keep them pinned there until they arrived (hence all the “non accurate” shots he took stopping them in their tracks).

@@gailseatonhumbert But it's unlikely he was AS bad as he appeared. At first he likely wasn't actually trying to hit them, like when they were slowly walking. Or when Henry tried to run with Sam. But when Joel came at him now he had a fast moving target actually trying to avoid being hit.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode II. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode II. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. Kathleen kills traitors. This is not the point that makes her particularly malicious. That's what you do with traitors. The people who betray their own people are worse than the enemy himself. You see the enemy coming, traitors shoot you in the back. And you have to assume, if you let them live, that they will do it again at any time. In the history of all revolutions, very few have ended bloodlessly, and very few have left their enemies alive after their victory. They were lynched. So nothing happens here that hasn't happened 1000 times before. In addition, there are no more laws. The only thing Kathleen does differently here is that her focus is exclusively on revenge on Henry and unfortunately at the expense of everyone else in her group. She was a good leader for the revolution, but when that was done, someone else would have had to take over. And, of course, she was a deviant, reluctant person. In the end, unfortunately, she was right. You cannot "fuck with fate". Henry sold all his people and the revolution for medicines, killed indirect a good and important man and Sam died anyway. This by his own hand. It doesn't get any worse. On the other hand, if Sam hadn't betrayed the leader, the revolution had never come, because the leader lacked the radicalism his sister had. It's just a loose loose situation. Misfortune on all sides, no matter how you spin it. I felt Kathleen's death was fitting. I mean she made it clear beforehand that she didn't care about children (wtf) and was then killed by a child clicker. An interesting feature of the show so far is that real brutality is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. With all other killings (Old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself. I found it really good to make Sam deaf. In the end, this opened the door for Sam to show Ellie the bite and then she could stay in the room with him without being attacked. He simply didn't hear her. Better than solved in the game and has given Ellie even more depth. She really hoped she could help Sam at that moment. In the game, Sam said nothing about his bite. Ellie entered his room the next morning and was attacked. Sidenote: Joel now also has Henry's backpack in addition to Sarah's watch and Frank's shirt. Unfortunately, something from Tess is missing. I would have found somehow beautiful and tragic.

Yeah, bloaters (the big guy) are an absolute pain to kill. Lots and lots of molotovs, and (of course!) while it's throwing spore grenades at you. Very much a "silently turn around and walk away" kind of enemy if you can. Or if you're one of -those- gamers- "Aha! A Challenge!"

In the game at least their thinner leg is their weak point and brings them down a lot faster but still liking that by this episode they aren't pushing the spores will infect you aspect even if it does severely nerf the threat of the Bloater here

Bummer you had to re-upload this! Happy to watch a second time and such for the engagement. This show really does get you in the feels, doesn't it? Even in the game, that scene was traumatizing. I loved Henry and Sam so much, and it was so good for Ellie to have another kid around. I'm not deaf, but I did learn to sign when I was little, so I still have some understanding of what was being said, which was neat. You don't often see characters signing in shows and it's nice to see the representation. The Bloaters really are terrifying. They're basically level bosses in the game(s), and no matter how many times I've played through them, the Bloaters always send my heart rate through the roof. I'd like to say that I can't believe FEDRA was stupid enough to just stuff all the infected underground in the dark and damp, but... they really are that dumb. My guess is that the section Joel and the gang went through was empty because FEDRA cleared the tunnels under the city in places where they could be sealed to prevent the Infected coming back. Since that section was already being used by Ish and his people, it may have been empty because it was sealed off before FEDRA started jamming the Infected down there like sardines in a can.

Melanie Lynskey was perfect for Kathleen. I only really know her as "Rose" from Two and a Half Men, the "probably disturbed stalker/girlfriend/bestie/only person to say how Charlie died." but she does the cutthroat, matter of fact, killer so well, while also being "so sweet and hard to blame" so well. The way Ellie (Bella) says it, is just so perfect "That's just the way he sounds. He has an @-hole voice" and Joel (Pedro) is delivering the "I don't know if I can trust that voice" TBH, _I_ would question whether he's up to something. 6:10-6:13 My instincts and intuition say "yes" 7:52-7:58 (some footage isn't shown for... well, _reasons_ ) showed that while Henry is 'smart' and 'caring' he *doesn't* understand how to protect Sam. [missed shot includes him nodding to Sam, Joel has to stop him. _No idea what's on the other side of that door_ ] 8:07-8:10 I'll come back to this. "If anything ever happens to Sam, I will riot" 11:00-11:03 _huge_ bonding moment from Ellie to Joel. Joel asks "Do you trust me?" Joel already showed an opening to her, by letting her keep the gun, as long as he could teach her to handle it right. 16:49-16:53 "If he turns into an infected, I will riot" [see 8:07 comment above] 23:00 where is the riot? Reactors say it. They may even mean it. But not once have I seen a "if this happen, riot" actually come to "it happened" *rage quit* I've quit series over such things. Sometimes to be brought back much later by the influence of someone else. And I've been thankful for those series that I was brought back to. But the "if this happens I riot" "if this happens, we riot" is so overused anymore. What does it even mean? Rioting isn't "I'll be upset" it isn't "I'll wait 3 weeks to come back"

You're actually telling a successful KZbinr to have a temper tantrum and stop a popular series right in the middle and royally piss off tens of thousands of her viewers?! You've gotta be kidding!! And all because she honestly expressed how disappointed she'd be if XYZ happens?! Apparently you're well familiar with "rage quitting" as you admit, but who cares if you do it? Anybody? That's the difference. Addie has a kind of responsibility to her subscribers and patrons that she recognizes and that she obviously intends to keep. Griping how she refuses to act out and quit because it didn't suit you has got to be one of the strangest complaints I've heard in a long time.
