5:45 I think the nightmares are a great metaphor for all the failed runs you have in the game. Like all the times you would fail saving yourself or Ellie. And you have to keep going through that pain until you get it right.

One of the things I love about this show is how, by slightly changing the context, it can take a scene right out of the game and make it feel new. In the game, when Joel tries to pass Ellie off to Tommy, it's because he's noticed how close he's gotten to her. He's terrified of feeling for her the way he felt for Sarah, because, if she gets hurt (or worse) he'd have to live through that pain of loss all over again. But in the show, we're well past that point. He tried to pass her off to Tommy because that thing game-Joel was afraid would happen has already happened - and both he and Ellie know it - and he doesn't want his fear of losing her the way he did Sarah to cripple him into inaction at a critical moment. It makes their argument the night before they leave feel so different despite being nearly word-for-word from the game. It's a subtly different path that, nevertheless, leads to the same destination. It's great.

My one unsolved mystery for this episode that I have yet to see anyone comment on is the fact that when the Jackson citizens first appear on their horses and encounter Joel and Ellie out by that river, there are a total of 11 horses carrying 11 riders. When they bring Joel and Ellie back to Jackson town, Ellie and Joel have each been given a horse to ride and can be seen riding, but there are still 11 horses carrying 11 riders in total. So 11 Jackson citizens left and met Joel and Ellie, but only 9 Jackson citizens returned with Joel and Ellie? Two of them just stayed behind and gave Joel and Ellie their horses for some reason? What's up with that?

@TangoNevada
@TangoNevada Жыл бұрын
It's TV, not a documentary. Not intended to be scrutinized to the most minute detail by millions of viewers on the internet. The bottom line is they took them back to Jackson. That's the plot point that matters. The rest is just irrelevant details. Like where was the Dog? Let alone how does Ellie know how to ride a Horse at full Gallop when being raised in a QZ? At some point you just need to accept it's a show and you will have to suspend your believe in reality at points. Oh, there are Fungus infected clicker killing people as well. So there might be some other parts that don't exactly line up with reality.
@gluonman
@gluonman Жыл бұрын
@@TangoNevada I wrote out a whole carefully crafted response to this and it got scrapped without notifying me what I did wrong. Maybe I violated a community guideline? Anyway, I don't feel like taking the time to write everything I wrote again, so here's the shorter version. TV isn't what it used to be. Not all shows are low-budget and carefree about details. It depends on who wrote it, and there are totally the Stanley Kubricks of TV these days. I had tried to link you to a list of shows that are incredibly highly detail oriented and put incredible effort into tiny details, but maybe linking that website is what got my last reply deleted, so I won't repeat that here. Just Google it if you're curious. But my basic points were that if you don't know that The Last of Us is one of those highly detail oriented shows where the writers don't neglect tiny details, then you are a very different TV watcher than me, and I'm guessing you've missed a lot of important details in The Last of Us (be it symbolism, easter eggs, foreshadowing, or what have you). Basically, you don't sit around and watch The Last of Us in the background while you do your laundry like you might with Malcolm in the Middle. You watch The Last of Us like you're trying to find Waldo. But to each their own. Don't police how other people watch TV. If you don't care about tiny details, then fine. But shows like The Last of Us really cater to viewers like me and that's a big part of why I love the show, because there is such an incredible attention to even the smallest detail, and the details do matter. They add nuance and help with full world immersion. Another writer who puts insane effort into tiny details is Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad notoriety. Anyway, let me be completely immersed in my details and you go and just take in the surface of the show. But don't police.

As much as I give it props for being the best video game to live-action adaptation, it’s also the easiest to adapt. The ingredients for a great show are already built in the game, and they just have to translate it to live-action with excellent acting and screenplay. It’s just like removing the game parts of the story and just watching the cutscenes in order, so I’m glad they’re mixing it up a bit with the changes, yet still staying true to each character’s story arc.

Yea, compared to the game it's moving a lot quicker, because of less combat and exploring around, etc. But I feel it makes sense for the show, as you wouldn't want to watch joel sneak around infected every 10-20 mins like in the games, you want to see the story. While there are somethings I wish they kept from the game, I also like what they added. I feel they've struck a healthy balance.

Changing the ethnic background of a few characters is easily the least significant change from source material in the show. Having a tertiary character be black doesn’t change anything. But there are other dramatically different story beats that will make people who have played the game and watched the show see things very differently. Like the concept of Joel having panic attacks about his daughters death, rather her death just turning him into an emotionally harden cynical survivalist bastard people have to pry vulnerability out of is a bigger change to me. Like the understanding the Joel is possibly someone I shouldn’t sympathize with even though I have a complex understanding of his plight is a big thing I’m not sure the show is doing

when Tommy bragged about sniping head shots from miles away, I love the nod to him being an absolute BAMF in part 2. That was my favorite section, finding out it was him that was mowing down the enemies. One man army. Him and Ellie decimated the Wolves. Joel would be proud.

The show is masterfully depicting as well, aside from character development, different arguments for societal organization within a post government scenario. Both episodes 5 and 6 portray versions of what some would call communism. The "we the people" post insurrection community, left in shambles through the leadership of a totalitarian, vengeful and charismatic leader (Kathleen); and Jackson, which is community centric, veering towards a more democratic approach.

At what time did Maria apologize? She explained the reason behind their behavior, and gave excuses for them, but I didn't hear her apologizing. I don't understand Tommy's resentment, wasn't he too old to blame anybody for his own behavior? Besides, he was in the military. Other say and i don't like it, that Maria knows Joel, NOooo, she knows what she heard of Joel. I don't like that lesson, judging someone for what you heard? Game and TV show are different. The part I like from The Last of Us II, is the part that Joel talking to Ellie, he tells her, If I had the same opportunity, I would do it again. For me it means that his reasons were not selfish, he was OK alone, as long as Ellie was alive, frankly as a parent, I would do that too, I don't think that as a betrayal. Otherwise when parents forbid things to their underage kids, they are betraying them all the time. She can make a live-death decision later at 18, when she understands what survivor's guilt is.

@@myra-yves The usual boxes that need to be checked for every modern television show: Race, sexuality, and capitalism bad. - Maria glorifying communism even though the audience is largely American. It adds nothing to the show and is only there to say, “Ha, see communism is good.” - An entire episode devoted to a gay couple even though it was only hinted in the game that he was gay. We all know if Bill was straight, he would not be getting a whole episode. - Unnecessary race swapping. Seriously, Henry and Sam were awesome last episode, why do we need to blackwash Maria?
