The release of The Last of Us in 2013 already marked a remarkable shift in narrative tone for big-budget, so-called “AAA” games. However, for some of us, 2014’s DLC chapter, The Last of Us: Left Behind, proved to be even more remarkable. It took mechanics that, in the game proper, had been used in nail-biting sequences of life-or-death desperation and repurposed them as the stuff of bonding and relationship-building, leading us to feel Ellie’s connection with Riley not just through cutscenes and pre-written dialogue but through play, in the purest sense of the word.

I think Riley turned so Ellie was forced to kill her (she told Joel in 1x04 that she's killed someone before). Marlene probably turned up later that day to pick up Riley and take her to Atlanta but instead found Ellie bitten and took her into custody where they tested her for the next 3 weeks to see if she'd turn or not.

Grogu's problem wasn't that he wasn't trained, but that he had suppressed memories, and his memories were already starting to come back, thanks to his connections with Ahsoka and Luke. 8:05 We shouldn't assume FEDRA's all bad--we saw in episode one that they tried to save the child outside the QZ. Their harsh rules are inhumane, for sure, but they know it only takes one infected person to bring their entire sanctuary down. I don't agree with what they're doing, as I think it is categorically wrong, but I do understand why they chose this route--name a better determent. This episode highlights that the Boston QZ still has room for new residence, so why couldn't they transform some areas in to jails? They could have implemented reform programs and assigned those who broke the laws to new training and labor--they need people to keep this machine going. This is why the children in the QZ are going to FEDRA schools to learn how to be soldiers to keep their home safe. We also shouldn't assume the Fireflies are all bad either. Both want the best for the world. FEDRA has accepted the new normal and has decided to live with what we have. The Fireflies believe that there's a path to something better, a path to something like the way things used to be, with more freedoms. That path, however, isn't guaranteed and comes with enormous risks. FEDRA isn't taking risks, as illustrated with their very public hangings. Society has everything to lose and only a chance at a better life, and that's not good enough. FEDRA's way has kept society safe for 20 years; their systems work. Until something else comes along with a higher success rate, nothings going to change them. 11:08 She didn't say that she shot someone before. When she and Joel were talking about killing a person, she said that it wasn't her first time--she didn't say how she killed that person. I think this episode is telling us who she had to kill ='( Riley told Ellie that this night was her last night in Boston, that she was shipping out in the morning. Instead of killing each other right then and there after learning they were both bit, they decided to spend the little time they had left to be with each other. We know Ellie didn't turn, and since Riley isn't around and Ellie is, well, I think we know what happened. Marlene told us in the first episode that she told her soldier NOT to shoot Ellie, so they found Ellie in Riley's quarters and they quickly figured out what had happened. When we see Ellie and the Fireflies, three weeks had passed since Ellie went AWOL and she was still herself. Ellie's knife is special to her. She favors it over a gun. I think she had to end Riley with it ='( Maybe she ended Riley before she turned or as she turned. They likely knew the symptoms--we're 20 years into this new world and the QZ had posters telling people what to look out for, so you'd think everything we saw in the ER was common knowledge--bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand take 2 to 8 hours for full Cordyceps infection. Once Riley started Slurring her speech, coughing, having spasms and mood changes they would have known that time was quickly running out. And like Tess, who chose to go out on her own terms, Riley might have asked Ellie to help her go out before she became something else. 15:49 Ellie's 14 and Riley's 17...maybe that wasn't said yet, but I agree that they're young and don't know much of anything yet. 17:42 is Chuck E. Cheese new to Canada? It has always been a place with tickets and prizes, that's not new. 18:14 2003. Outbreak day happened 9/26/2003--Joel's birthday. 25:58 Infected aren't dead...they're...infected. The CDC has already confirmed that infected aren't dead, which is why they call them infected and why their guidelines tell people how to prevent Cordyceps infection. Infected people become prisoners inside their minds while cordyceps hijack their bodies, like they do in ants and a few other insects. Had they cut their hand/arm off, they could have survived the infection, sure, but they'd need to be in a hospital to make sure they survived the amputation process. 27:20 That wasn't a runner. A runner is an infected that has just turned. Runners don't have fungal growth on them. Infected with fungal growth that still have eyes are called Stalkers. Infected who've already shed away half of their skull from the bridge of the nose up are called Clickers and those that survive long enough to be completely covered in fungal growth are called Bloaters. We'll have to keep watching to see what any other stages might be called. 30:17 different shades of gray. FEDRA was birthed out of the military, and their thinking is very military. That's not a good way to govern for the people, everyone in society aren't all soldiers, and as we learned from the Bad Batch, "good soldiers follow orders." Society is built on having inalienable rights and seeing how FEDRA is often described as fascist, something went wrong along the way. My guess is that military mindset. FEDRA took control of the failing government because it failed to lead when the world was falling apart. Chain of command is key in military, and orders will be followed...as we saw with the soldier that fired on Joel and Sarah. This is how the military survived Outbreak day and became FEDRA. That had what it took to grab control and contain the situation. Now that things are contained and have been so for 20 years, they won't give up those powers...sort of like Palpatine =P Had they moved towards some form of government with elected officials, they probably wouldn't have a Firefly problem.

Another fantastic episode with a lot of character depth for Ellie. Ellie never said she had shot anyone before. She said she had hurt someone before. Riley played Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka (last game). Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. I think it's clear she stabbed her. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is not nice, he is manipulative. This can be seen in Riley who is allowed to supervise the sewage work. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. I actually thought Ashley Johnson would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale. Next episode Troy Baker will get his cameo.

Knowing the darkness of the world they live in, best not waste good heartfelt moments with anxiety waiting for something bad to happen. I know that’s hard but still. Something bad will always happen unfortunately. So just take in and enjoy the lillte bit of hope and good side of humanity they show us. Thats what it’s about, finding the light in the dark. It’s a depressing world so take whatever good is offered and run with it and experience it before they break your heart lol

The raider Joel killed broke his bat on the tree when swinging at Joel. Then when Joel came at him, he impaled him with the broken bat handle. It might have not even been intentional. The attacker in the mall was a stalker, not a runner. They behave and look different than runners which are basically the newly turned. Stalkers are at that stage of infection between a runner and clicker. It still could see, but tends to be more stealthy in stalking its prey.

0:33 It really wasn't a make shift shiv. If you go back and watch the choreography of the fight, you see the raider started with a full bat that he swung and hit a tree and broke. Then Joel came at him and in their grappling is likely when it became impaled in Joel, possibly not even intentionally by the raider.

To the point about the humanization of Fedra: Not all Nazis were in the SS, many believed they were correct and doing the right thing, (compare and contrast Jojo Rabbit w/ Come And See.) Also, many American soldiers feel the same way about their missions in Iraq or Vietnam-Some believe they’re spreading democracy or freedom or whatever while others commit war crimes. Though a similar point is made in y’all’s commentary about recruitment in rebel/insurgent factions, it’s focused on less in the show. Though it’s important that they are sending Riley across the country instead of letting her fight for the community she had been living in. It shows both the scale of their fight and how they see the disposable quality of their recruits. It’s interesting how the in both ep.1 & earlier in this ep we’re shown dead/infected that were not there the last time one of the characters was around. How fast can things change seems to be an important subject. It’s also interesting comparing the third ep and the third to last ep-The tension we feel between Bill & Frank is broken pretty fast while they let the tension between Ellie & Riley last until almost the end. In the case of the girls the tension is built with the world around them while in the case of Bill & Frank the tension was between the two of them. Something I noticed watching reaction channels was how many felt the sexual tension versus how many felt the tension was coming from whether or not Frank could be trusted and if he would try and kill Bill. As a queer person I think the tension between Bill & Frank was an amazing metaphor for the hyper vigilant, paranoia centered around the violence that comes with “Trans Panic” or “Gay Panic.” While on the other hand there is a queer tension brought from the world around them, because while Bill & Frank were already isolated Riley & Ellie are being pushed away. Ellie pursues love and is marked in a way that prevents her from returning to the life she had been living, Riley is being sent away by the Fireflies, her other options is to spend her life in the sewage-thrown out. They can’t even conceive of another option for themselves until it is too late, (reminds me of The Living End.) The show is great in how if does focus on creating shades of gray from what could easily be a black & white perspective-It’s even light years better than Chernobyl, which gets brought up a lot because of Craig Mazin, (though I personally feel that was pretty black & white, and flawed.) Anyway, I am loving the show and am loving y’all’s reactions.

As a person played the game I say that, this episode absolutely had to be final episode of season. Otherwise it will kill the best scene of Ellie. And they killed it. How pity 😞😞😞
