Great reaction as always! This episode covered my absolute favorite part from the game. You get to play as Ellie for the first time, and she really comes into her own. Just like in the show, it keeps cutting back and forth between the two characters, fooling you into thinking Joel might swoop in and save her at the last minute. But nope, Ellie proves how capable she truly is and saves herself! But Joel is still there to provide fatherly emotional support after her traumatic experience. The entire Winter section was such a well-paced rollercoster ride, and HBO did a pretty decent job of condencing and adapting it.

Wow, the way Elise's eyes lit up when Joel said he'd pop that guy's kneecap off, this is why I watch reactions. Also, damn, Lisa has amazingly good instincts, I mean the acting really sells it but yeah, that dude was creepy from the beginning, I couldn't put my finger on it, but a wolf in sheep's clothing. That shot when Bella Ramsey kills Troy Baker, chef's kiss, what great directing. Not sure how they'll top this ep

@@pickbo It's the most common one actually. Runners are all the freshly infected, which generally still look human, like old nana in episode 1. Stalkers are all those that show outside fungal infection, typically with their face half covered in funi. They're the ones that have not, or not yet, transitioned towards being a clicker. Bloaters apparently require a strong host to reach that stage.

Penicillin like that would go in the muscle. Mainly the butt cheek. Injecting in the area like that wouldn’t really do much harm other than it being painful. And in real life it does work pretty quickly BUT Joel still hasn’t eaten in days so he’d still be at deaths door.

Runner stage lasts anywhere between 1 week to a year. They can grow into the stalker stage at any point during that year. Basically the stalker is the mid-point of turning into a clicker but the fungus hasn’t split the skull open and blinded the host yet. They evolve into the clicker stage after a year. Bloater/??? stage of infection can take 10+ years to reach. If the host is too weak they will die and become a husk in the environment where the fungus will grow out in search of a new host and release spores (Not seen in the show). This makes encountering a late stage infected extremely rare. I would love to see an encounter with a group of stalkers tbh. They’re imo the creepiest stage of the infection because as the name implies, they’re more skittish and prefer to ambush people. They usually hide in dark areas and peek around corners, ducking behind cover when you look at them. So you only see them poking out from the corner of your eye based on my knowledge from playing both games. I could see it make a good horror-like suspenseful encounter in the show but maybe it’s hard to achieve the same feel. Idk. I dread encountering them every time I do a playthrough. They make my skin crawl .

I don't know about human medicine but we usually give our PPG (penicillin with procaine) subcutaneously or IM into the epaxial muscle in veterinary medicine. I don't think I've ever injected it directly into a lesion like she did. It probably wouldn't hurt though, except maybe literally.

In my experience, this would generally be given PO, IV, or IM, with the IM injection at the ventrogluteal or dorsogluteal sites (though of course there are more risks with dorso). I’ve never worked in an environment where they would inject antibiotics into the abdomen, but others in the comments seem to say it’s possible 🤷🏻‍♀️. Just doesn’t seem like it was in the IM space so I would think it would be less effective 🤔.

the animal running after being shot is usually adrenaline :) With a good shot it will still run, but once the adrenaline wears off it dies. You always aim for the heart or the lungs.

The mall was powered because the entire district of the QZ is, they just flipped the breaker switch to shut it off and save the energy that way. In regards to "getting David". I don't think it's a decision that should be made for everyone else. They didn't knew they were eating people. If you're in such a bad spot then let them make that decision for themselves, and let them deal with the consequences of refusing to do it. And to add another layer that you might not have thought about when his intentions became clearer: David was a math teacher before, teaching kids like Ellie.

A part of Joel died and he became the cold hardened man that did whatever was necessary to ENDURE and SURVIVE--he wasn't living. Bill's letter to Joel was to remind him that "men like them" aren't supposed to just survive, but find someone to live for. For Bill that was Frank. Bill thought that person was Tess, but Joel never thought of Tess that way--"Tess was like family," remember? Joel's be going on an adventure of his own, a discovery of who he is, the man he wants to be. We saw in Jackson that he's afraid to get attached to someone because he's afraid that he'll fail to protect that person a second time--he couldn't protect Tess and that was at the start of their journey ='( Ellie has grown on Joel and he's grown on her. What's he going to do? I think this episode will help Joel figure out his role in life. 3:15 It wasn't a mystery Hugo. FEDRA turned on the power to an area without realizing that they also reconnected the mall--we were told this in the story. FEDRA wouldn't haven't know about the power drain because it was 2am and most everyone was sleep, not using any power or very little of it. 3:36 I would be surprised if we got any more story on Riley and Ellie from that time--we know what happened! Ellie told us her story early on this flashback along with that little bit tells us all we need to know about what happened. *This Flashback takes place 3 weeks before the 20 time jump. *The clothes we see Ellie wearing in episode one are the same ones she's wearing in the flashback. *Ellie told Tess that she was alone when she attacked and bit in the mall, we could assume it wasn't true when she said it, and we got confirmation last week. *We know they didn't "take the easy way out"--Ellie is still here, but we also know that Riley didn't make, as she wasn't with Marlene and she certainly wasn't immune like Ellie. *Riley picked up Ellie at 2am and Riley was supposed to ship out in the morning with the Fireflies to Atlanta, and we know that didn't happen. *We can assume that the person Ellie killed before was her girlfriend Riley, and that's very likely why her knife is so important to her--it's her last connection to Riley. *The Fireflies likely showed up just after Ellie killed Riley, just before she turned, and Marlene made a quick assessment of the room and deduced that Ellie was immune with Riley dead and Ellie alive. They were both attacked around the same time and Ellie was still normal. *according to the poster from the first episode, Ellie and Riley had between 2 to 8 hours before Ellie had to kill her, and since Ellie was bit higher up the arm she should have been showing symptoms earlier than Riley, but she didn't. Riley and Ellie would have known something unique was had happened, and I assume that Riley begged Ellie to kill her before she turned since she wouldn't want to be the person to potentially kill Ellie. Anyway, I don't think we need to see what happened, as we can figure that out based on what the story already told us. 5:26 That indeed was a Stalker, but that wasn't the first time we saw one. The one that kissed Tess was a Stalker. The one that Bill's trap killed was a Stalker. -Phase one is Runner they're are the folks with bloodshot eyes and very visible webbed like veins on their skin, and they sort of look like an irritated rash. -Phase two is Stalker. I'd skip the time period stuff, as that hasn't been clearly explained yet. Stalkers are Infected that fungal growth slowly overgrowing the host body. -Phase three is Clicker. Clickers are very easy to identify since the host's skull has been split in half horizontally just below the nose to give way to the fungal growth that is now the head. -Phase four is Bloater. The infected's entire body is covered in fungal growth, nothing human looking is left. 6:01 I know they've said cure in the story, but you can't cure this. Would you want to be cured if you were an infected? Infected are prisoners in a body no longer their own. They're forced to watch horrors being committed by them. What do you think that does to a person? Now imagine a person who was forced to watch themselves wipe a family or a town? They aren't going to forget that! Their life is a nightmare that they cannot wake from. Being free from that nightmare would likely break a person. I guess I could see a world in which a Runner is cured, but how would you cure a Stalker or a Clicker or Bloater? How would you remove the fungal growth? How do you regrow an upper skull, eyes, ears or skin? Mental trauma aside, infected are screwed. There is no coming back for them. Personally, I think the best this world can hope for is a vaccine that makes everyone like Ellie, immune from becoming an Infected, allow the military to slowly begin to reclaim territory. This would still be an terribly difficult mission, as billions of people have got to be infected by now, 20 years after outbreak day. Millions are probably still normal, but people are too scattered to get the word out. Worst still technology has basically stopped. They're still stuck with 2003 technology for the most part. FEDRA did make scanners, but that's the only thing we've really seen. 8:13 James, the guy who said "I still believe" is the video voice actor and actor for Joel (Troy Baker). Sometimes you can kind of hear Joel in his voice. 8:28 Spot on! 9:25 Why? Wyoming today had a population of 503,000 people in 2003, lesson that a million people--Teton County, where Jackson Hole is had a population of 19,066 in 2003, and that was BEFORE the world fell apart! Joel headed to the general area of where Tommy last radioed in, and we were told that there weren't many settlements out there, so there were only a couple places to go. I don't think it was too farfetched for Joel to find Tommy. I don't know, man. The writers did their homework. They didn't choose some big city or heavily populated area like Joel's home of Austin or Portland. 15:45 If it wasn't Joel, it was either the rat in the corner or the cockroach under his pillow =P 16:05 Two points for Lisa! Note to self, DO NOT invite David to the potluck! 18:11 HOLD UP! David made everyone believe that they were eating deer. He even asked James how much they had left before they ran into Ellie, remember? That time was code, because they didn't have any deer, but no one else knew that! So with everyone believing they still had some deer left, I see no reason for them to assume that they were eating their own. At this particular moment, however, James showed up with a deer for them all to see...which probably made them wonder why is he showing us this now...when he didn't appear to be a normal thing for him to do. James wasn't to be questioned, that much was clear. 19:16 Was there a label? It didn't look like it had a label on it. Ellie was desperate and took what she was given. She trusted that she wasn't being lied to, and lucky for her David didn't lie to her. He actually gave her medicine! 27:24 he always had that with him--you don't remember? He was trying to fix his boot with it before he was found by Tommy's people. he had a whole role of it. Joel was a smuggler! If you wanted something, he was the guy to go to. He knew what he needed in this world, and Duck Tape is one of those things. Worth more than gold is this new world. 29:09 Now you know what Joel is capable of. This is that sleeping giant and why this story showed us the worn down 56 year old who felt like he had lost it. Joel was feeling anxiety because he was growing attached to Ellie, and now that she's in trouble, the savage people know him to be is awake, and he's hungry. But I think you're in for a surprise you likely didn't see coming. Those of us who played the game knew what was coming because the game prepared us for this since the character we controlled changed to Ellie after the university. We had to hunt for food and scavenge, and before that Ellie had to fight every now and again to protect Henry, Sam and Joel when they were together. We were being prepped for what was coming. Everything is baby steps in the gaming world and you always have to level up. Story-wise, this is spot on with the game, albeit a bit more fleshed out. The level up stuff is taken out, which is why we don't see as many Infected, but I think that makes the story better, as we know when one comes on screen things are going to get serious. The Walking Dead ruined the fear of zombies in my opinion, they're all the same always doing the same things. The infected are a bit different. 39:24 I don't know if I agree with that. Ellie isn't a violent person by nature. She's always had to fight to survive. She was bullied at the FEDRA school, so she had to learn to fight. Ellie loved to read, still does, if she could go to school and just learn she'd do that, but she lives in a world where people are nearly all savages, and it sucks to be a woman in this world, especially if you're alone ='( Next week is the season finale, and judging how things are going, it should conclude the first game. I cannot wait to see how they wrap this up. What an amazing adaptation this turned out to be. Apologies for the wall of text m(_ _)m

I would get what David is saying about like, starving would be worse than cannibalism if we literally hadn't seen Jackson -- an even bigger town -- that was well stocked and working through the winter just fine. He also ate like...so much more than the others. His horrible dysfunctional god-complex of a personality is absolutely the reason why his people are starving. They absolutely wouldn't need to eat people, he just wanted to have the power to feed them loved ones without them knowing.

I'm with Elise about David's decision to be cannibalistic...I get it, I disagree but I get it. They're just trying to survive. There is a real case of a plane crash where the surviving passengers had to eat the dead passengers in order to survive. I forgot the case's name but if you Google it, you'll find it. The reason why you don't see infected in ep 6-8 is because it's winter. Cordyceps' take refugee underground during winter (at least the real life fungi behaviour) so I'm guessing the showrunners follow that behaviour as they want to keep it as realistic as possible.

This is the most important episode in this story, executed perfectly. You finally see the cruelty & ruthlessness of Joel & how his worst characteristics have rubbed off on Ellie. The creator was adamant that this fact came across strongly so as to set up all that follows, both 1st & 2nd game. This is the fulcrum upon which everything else turns. Impressed they managed to capture it so well. Often "heroes" being violent is excused or even cheered. Here, there's none of that. It's brutal & gross & traumatic, as it should be to everyone watching.

What this game and this well-adapted show do so well, is to humanize basically everybody and to show clearly that people aren't all good and all bad, except for David, who is pretty much all bad. (That's on purpose, as not every person is reedemable). To paraphrase Neil Druckman about this game: "This is a love story, and that's not a good thing."

This was a great episode. Love the adaptation. Nothing too important was taken away from the game, except the gameplay of fighting a horde of infected. It won't be realistic bc not many infected will survive the cold weather and it's such a remote area. And if they were both were up against the infected, then they wouldn't survive, especially with a bloater.

Ellie's hunting scenes and her meeting with David and James were filmed in Alberta Canada in February. It was 17 below zero that day but there are still behind the scenes shots of a makeup artist brushing redness on her cheeks and nose, not because she wasn't actually red but to keep it consistent looking from shot to shot since she would get warm between shots. people think Ellie was trying to make her voice sound lower and tough when she was threatening David and James, but Bella said it was so cold that her larynx was freezing up and she was having trouble speaking clearly. The gun however was a real hunting rifle, not a prop. It was almost as big as her and heavy as hell. They did this to make her struggle to keep it up and pointed at David and James just as it would be for Ellie in real life. Bella was feeling it the next day in her biceps and pecs. If you think Ellie kills for self-defense then stick around for season 2. David was sick and crazy, but he was not wrong about what he and Ellie have in common.

EDIT--- MINOR GAME SPOILERS (regarding the few differences in this sequence of events) One thing I love about this show is that it's very faithful to the game, and this sequence in particular was _very_ close to the game. The main differences are: there were more bodies; the rape attempt wasn't quite as explicit in the game (but you could definitely read between the lines in the game); and Ellie killed the fluffy rabbit (with an arrow... it was brutal). But otherwise this is pretty spot on. And after all these adaptations the last few years that were run by narcissists who abandoned the source material, I'm so glad to actually have a show that honors the original version.
