@@stephaniespain9849 I agree. Many of the episodes have been excellent but Ep3 stands out. It had excellent cinematography, acting, lighting, sound, sets, music, pacing, and emotional weight, all while echoing the themes of the series (the importance of love, of connection, of community, and the difference between a life of survival versus a life with meaning).

The scary part about David is he genuinely believes he is a good person. That he’s a savior and will be a great king with Ellie as his queen and even as he attacks her he calls it love. He doesn’t see it as an evil act. So frightening. Bella is so phenomenal, another episode leaving me in tears.

No I think he’s self aware he believes he’s smarter than everyone else and knows that he’s lying and manipulating people and tries to do it to Ellie like he knows he’s evil he likes the power and control over ppl when he assaulted her he don’t really believe that sht he just wanted to torment her that’s why he said “ my fav part is the fighting back” he’s not delusional that he the new messiah or nothing like that

I’m not sure about that, although I get where you’re coming from. David admits that he’s always had a violent heart , so I don’t think he’s deluded himself into thinking he’s a good person, but rather he’s just so unapologetically evil, and he likes it. He has no empathy or humanity, and he feels superior or powerful because of that. I think it’s equally terrifying though, because there’s no way to bargain with someone like that, or even understand them. The only way to deal with them is to kill them, and tragically it was Ellie that had to do it. David was so evil that even though he lost, he took part of Ellie down with him, he forced her into a situation where she couldn’t win. Yes she survived, but she’s broken

Man… Bella’s acting is what carry’s this in so many ways not that the other actors like David and Joel weren’t good but just the pure terror and rage and then just sadness and relief that Bella shows in the last ten minutes is so insane. The actor that played David did a great job of showing as beau mentioned the malice that had been hidden under the surface but in the end is just a complete monster. Like when he has her pinned and she spits on him and he’s like oh the fighting is the best part it makes my fucking skin crawl…. Also getting Joel’s famous torture scene was incredible and I love them showing more and more of just how cut throat Joel is.

5:00 A vial of penicillin like that would be meat for intramuscular injections. It may also be for reconstituting into a mini-bag to infuse into an IV, but we don't really inject drugs directly into a vein with a needle/syringe. That said, honestly provided Joel isn't septic and just has peritonitis (infection of the abdomen lining) injecting the antibiotic directly into the area isn't the worst idea. She'd run the risk of perforating his bowel or a blood vessel, but provided she avoided that it would indeed help to have antibiotic injected there.

Why is no one talking about the comparison of this community with the one we just saw 2 episodes back ("Kin" I think)? In that episode we're shown how a community can survive and thrive when it works together -- when everyone pitches in and has shared leadership and shared work/property (even though they have to be vigilant and be OK having a reputation as ruthless). This is as opposed to "Silver Lake" in this episode which is dominated by one person who makes all the decisions and controls everyone and everything. It contrasts dictatorship/authoritarianism with a democratic/community that takes care of its people. Also the comparison of Tommy as a father to David as a father...

This acting from Bella is what I wanted the directors ask from Maisie with Arya. I always saw Sansa and Arya as foils to one another as in Arya would be wild, emotional, and out of control. @siobhan_vvv7167
@siobhan_vvv7167 Жыл бұрын
The adaptation def doubled down on David's creepy and horrifying side but I think Joel showed up after Ellie had her revenge is really important because logically David had the key on him and he locked the door, so it wouldn't make sense for Joel stopping her and calming her down in the restaurant. And more importantly it's a highlight of Ellie's inclination to extreme violence when seeking revenge and she's very capable of it which also foreshadowed her story in part 2. Bella did a fantastic job this ep, the last 5 min is so hard to watch because I'm beyond horrified for Ellie and feel for her pain, and by the end I know that sassy silly happy lil Ellie was never the same ever again. It just so sad to see her childhood being robbed from her by so many traumatic events.
@flecks_piano
@flecks_piano Жыл бұрын
I agree it heightened the sheer violence and terror in that scene that Joel wasn't there to pull her away from David in that moment. But I'm also kind of bummed, like many others I've seen in comments, that it kind of introduced this weird element that you now _see_ that there's nobody else coming for them when they get out of there, even though David shot like 5 times as Ellie escaped from James and himself, and the building was on fire. It can still be explained somewhat; the building probably wasn't showing signs of smoke just yet for someone to pay attention to it and already be out there to catch Joel and Ellie outside; there also seemed to be a pretty windy storm out as Joel was approaching in the first shots we see of him in the resort, so David's group were perhaps just all huddled up inside and didn't hear the shots; David henchmen were probably pretty much all dead from Joel and Ellie decimating them, etc. But I couldn't help but being a bit taken out of that ending because of that on the first watch, and I would have hoped it was a bit more explicit _why_ they could just walk away unhindered. The way it's handled in the game doesn't have that problem since they don't really show them actually walk away from that building where Ellie kills David. Still a great episode and a great way to adapt that scene, but a bit of an annoyance there for me.
@maia_gaia

This episode really hit home how traumatic these events were for Ellie. I love the game, but this was so much more visceral. Bella's performance was jaw dropping. Every episode they cement why they were the right person for this role, and I cannot wait to see what they do with season 2.

I only played the game through the Pittsburgh section. The show has felt paced just fine to me (I think because I have zero expectation or knowledge of whatever is to come). Nothing feels slow, or rushed, or incomplete, or padded out. Instead it just feels super tight -- great economy of writing, where nothing is filler. Everything, every piece of dialog and interaction adds up to more than the sum of the parts (to me).

Penicillin should be injected into the muscle. And considering Ellie has no experience in finding veins, and that complications of injecting in the vein are common, she made the right choice. Now injecting directly into the wound is not usually the choice, but there are academic papers suggesting that it might be more effective. What worried me the most is that she didn't seem to have gotten enough penicillin for the 10 days Joel should be taking it.

I'm thinking some of Ellie's reaction to Joel at the end had to do with she assumed he was either killed by the scouts or left for dead in the basement and she was on her own after such a horrific ordeal. The recognition and relief on Ellie's face when she focused onto Joel allowed her to come back to humanity because not only was Joel still alive, but he went to come get her.

Great episode! Loved it! Cried (again). My critique is this: the important music cues are missing from the show in certain episodes/moments. This episode was missing two that I think could have amplified the emotions to the viewer. 1. Joel’s interrogation scene. They could have played his “I’m a bad MF” theme during that. (Those who played the game know what I mean). 2. When Ellie kills David, there’s a score in the game at that moment that sounds like it’s breaking apart or wavering. Then it cuts out the dialogue (after Joel calls her baby girl) and just plays the music so it seems like Ellie isn’t hearing Joel anymore (shell shock in a way). It makes you feel so much more sadness about what’s happened to her. This was the ultimate loss of innocence for her (or whatever was left). Anyway, the show did great! But I thought the lack of score at certain moments just left something more to be desired.

I agree every time the infected have been shown they've been shown to be nigh unstoppable forces of nature that require pretty much high level explosives to deal with in hordes, and it's lead to every encounter with them to be tense and exciting. How would their community have survived in the area so long if the place was overrun with clickers?

I actually don't think that Ellie is super violent "in her heart". Pastor freak just told her that to groom her, while projecting his own shit onto her. She actually just seems like a (sometimes sassy) teenager who up until this point was pretty much non violent. In the beginning when we see her being bullied we learn that her friend had to have her back. Finally she had to step up for herself but she really needed to be pushed to give that bully a black eye. It did not come out of her like "Hell yeah, give me a reason to punch you, b***! It was more pent up frustration and anxiety from probably endless incidences like that but pretty "normal" I guess considering she is alone and with her back to the wall. If she was truly violent she would have done so much more to that bully. Later, she THINKS she would like to have a gun and poses with it but when she actually has to use it for the first time she is anxious and reluctant to do it, but knows they will die if she doesn't. The amount of violence she resorts to when she kills pastor freak is just pure terror of almost having been butchered (later eaten) and raped. I mean, rape is freaking scary, especially as a teenager who has never been touched, like...really really TERRIFYING. Gladly I never had to experience anything even remotely close to that but man, just watching this as a grown up get's into my bones. I think she was in trauma survival mode. That was not a deliberate "I enjoy hacking him to pieces with my violent heart" thing. Just wanted to point that out because it kind of felt unfair to me to adopt the label that the freak pastor projected on her with his own agenda in mind while he tried to fuck her up to the core.

This. This kills me. This is why we can't have nice things. I'm kinda glad I didn't play the game and get attached to it, and now I might choose to never play it. Good adaptations, bad adaptations, great adaptations, people always find a way to ruin the fun. You know that saying, "Kill Your Heroes"? If you put people on a pedestal, you're destined to disappointment or to defend monsters. Maybe we should add "Burn your Masterpieces." Maybe Kafka was right. A total nobody, he asked his friend to burn his unpublished, at the time completely unknown work, as he was dying. Instead his friend published it.

I don't hate episode 3, but my issue is the amount of time they took away from Joel and Ellie, and focused on side characters who didn't help character development for the main characters. I don't care that it was a story about two men's relationship, but if the story was about a man and a woman, I would still have the same opinion on the episode that two supporting characters, are not supporting main character development.

I really wish we could have separated this episode into more of a two parter. You're both were right. Abx usually go in the veins. Some things can be done topically or locally, but probably not what's wrong with Joel. At that point, I gotta imagine he was septic from a gut infection. That said, abx were scarce, & even many docs aren't your best shot to hit a vein first try for an injection (from what I've seen, the order is usually phelbotomist > most nurses >> most docs... just bein honest), so I can't fault a young girl that's never given an injection for shoddy technique. Where Joel's wounded, not sure how much penicillin would've realistically helped anyway. Probably needed some vanc, metro, ceftri or somethin, idk. Unless the real issue was dealing with some syphilis he didn't wanna mention, I guess. Then penicillin might've been just what Joel needed. 😂

I don't think it was so much people hating the "gay relationship" as there are many gay or trans references in the game. Each episode has its subtleties and impact. The writers and show runners have done a brilliant job, moving the story along. While at times it felt as if things were dragging on, and/or rushing, ultimately, the timing has been perfect. This episode is proof. As far as showcasing Bella’s range; I’m sorry, but this was the crucible. The sky is the limit with her. I had no idea what to expect, and each time she shows up and delivers. The nuances of her emotions are unending. I’m not sure I have seen a person her age do what she did in this episode and all through the season, since Maisie in Game of Thrones. All of Maisie’s performances were masterpieces. Bella certainly, and ironically is every bit as remarkable. When she was on the chopping block, I completely forgot that I was watching an episode of television, and I felt utter dread. I had real fear that they would actually kill her. Not to mention so many expressions on her face: fear, rage, stealth, and more during the moments she was hiding. Every step of the way she was completely authentic. All of the performances by the entire cast are amazing and believable. There are simply no words for Pedro. He is a unicorn. I was so heartbroken when Anna was killed off, but this has been so amazing and outstanding. And while I agree, episode three was magnificent and beautiful; they each get better and better. To me, this has been the pinnacle. I’m actually having anxiety about the finale. I welcome any thoughts on my comments. Did I miss some thing? This is just crazy! I never imagined being more excited about a series than G.O.T. or H.O.D. By the way, I think your podcast is the best ever. Look at the difference between her expression after she leapt from the chopping block. She was mostly ok, light on her feet and quick witted. After he pins her, the terror in her face, the abject horror... you should recognize that trauma. She is in shock afterwards. When Joel grabs her, in her old self she would have gone for his jugular. But she didn't. She was flailing and shaking. It's not the same at all. She HEARD him. When he said "I thought you understood. I like struggle..." Think about it: he was a teacher, then he became a preacher. Both positions are perfect for a predator. The knows. She figured it out. It’s *actually* *GENUINELY* amazing episodes like this that get me the most frustrated to see so many people in past (not so great, just decent/slightly above average) episodes that just throw out 10/10’s ratings for those previous episodes in such a casual, nonchalant manner just like they are throwing out fist fulls of bread crumbs to a flock of seagulls. My point being, of course, that when a legitimate (near) perfect episode like this actually *DOES* indeed come along inevitably, and perhaps even though it may not be 100% percent perfect, still may justifiably deserve that 💫’Golden 10 ⭐️ Rating’ 💫 (albeit every once in a blue moon, rightfully so, too, I might add…even though I must reiterate that I believe it is EXTREMELY rare for a television episode/show/or even perhaps a movie to ever *really* technically and truly/authentically even possibly be deserving of being considered “completely perfect”) So then what the hell kind of rating do you expect to give an incredible episode like this now?! A 14/10??? I mean, I’m just saying thoughhh…it is a *bit* ridiculous at times when I see this time and time again, hahaha…yall know what I’m saynnnn?? Right?? 🤨 🤔 🧐 🤦‍♂️ 😅

two things 1) you shouldn't care that much about ratings nowadays because it's either just a bunch of blind fanboys who will give out 10/10s to distort the show into seeming better than it is, or it's review bombed by idiots. 2) usually the amazing episodes have less hateful ratings and more people with high votes who are unbiased, so the rating goes up, falling (more or less) somewhere in a fair place.
