Both of you and the show deserve all the accolades and awards that can possibly be given for such an amazing show as well as bringing those characters to life. Craig Mazin is full of little gems like this in every Making Of, dude so clearly loves the source material and most of the things that were changed from the game were his ideas, and are mostly for the better. The way that Craig Mazin got emotional about Joel admitting he tried to end his own life and how he wanted to stay close to the game with the giraffe scene demonstrates how dedicated he was in honoring the story that Neil Druckmann first brought to life 10 years ago. Even the score playing as Joel massacred his way through the hospital brought out a new perspective to the violence that fans from the game were all too familiar with while adding an emotional human aspect to that sequence🎮🍄

And also to show how love is, and what you would do for love. Yes, even give up the chance for a possible cure! If they did ask Ellie tho, and she gave them her consent and to Joel, and she understands it all then maybe Joel wohld accept her choice and not kill all those people. @Hajker my only complaint is on an editing stand point. It was too fast paced... there was no breathing after that bomb went off... the action sequence was rushed... to me it sort of took away the weight of why it was so controversial in the game... it sort of just feels like it's glimpsed over.... and it's the most important part of the storyline that leads to Joel's consequential scenes in pt 2. It was almost perfect if they had just added 2 minutes of breathing screen time to let the audience actually digest and watch Joel go on a rampage. It could just be me. The cast & crew delivered perfectly & impressively this is on editing.

@@tess5750 There are multiple things at play obviously - Joel never ever wanted to talk about Sarah before, but now he feels comfortable discussing her again with Ellie, which is a positive thing. He's volunteering information to Ellie about himself, which is again, a positive! On the flip side however... A large part of their relationship growth was Joel beginning to see her as an equal, and trusting her more. Through becoming a surrogate daughter, she's now being relegated to the status of "child" in his eyes, which is somewhat demeaning for Ellie. She's going from "someone I can trust" to "someone I have to protect" and Ellie doesn't want to be vulnerable, she doesn't want to NEED protection. There's also a slightly insidious element to the comparison to his first daughter. An easier comparison would be that of an ex-partner: imagine if you were dating someone who constantly said things like "You would've liked them!" "They were great, they had all these amazing qualities. you don't but they would've liked you anyway". It's somewhat similar here, that she's being compared to someone she cannot live up to, and is slightly uneasy for her. It's also A LOT of pressure for her to have to live up to his memory of his dead daughter... Incredibly nuanced and difficult situation!

the heartbreak in anna's voice when she says "her name is ellie" is really what broke me for that scene. she knows she's going to die, she's just given birth, she's exhausted, her best friend is witnessing her like this, and she's been bitten. she's never going to see her child grow up. her voice is shaking, it's breaking, she's trying not to cry. ashley johnson did a fantastic job, hands down.

It was beautiful. Joel, a broken man just learned to open up again, just learned to love again, just beginning to heal after not being able to save his daughter. After 20 years of misery, hopelessness, and void of emotion, he found love and purpose, only to be faced with losing it all again, to men with big guns. His love for Ellie and pain of losing his daughter was greater than all of mankind. And mankind could burn before he would let her die. A beautiful story of love and the power of fatherhood, and parents in general. And Ellie, choosing to believe Joel's lie, rather than truly believing him, because she too found love, purpose and family, with Joel, and maybe that's worth living for, to be loved that deeply. A beautiful, and complicated ending.

In most adaptations, there tends to be discord between the original writers, the studio, and the director...and those differences tend to ruin the adaptation. I suddenly realized it was Ellie's mom, because Ashley and Bella genuinely look like they could be blood relatives. 1. Ashley Johnson did GREAT. 2. The giraffe scene was absolutely necessary. 3. I'm happy that they didn't change much of anything. For example, Joel killing everyone including the doctor without a 2nd thought and 0 hesitation. 4. The showrunners did phenomenal because they allowed the story to speak for itself. The game was a masterpiece because of how it ended, and the discussion afterwards was just as interesting. 5. This is one of those stories you want to go into COMPLETELY blind. No SPOILERS and the less you know the better. 6. I can't wait to hear the reactions from everyone who didn't play the game. If I could experience this story again for the 1st time I would. 7.(Edit) It was also nice to see Merle Dandridge back as Marlene. One of the most morally complicated story developments I've ever seen: choosing to save one person who you connect with only as replacement to a former lost loved one vs the rest of the human race you'll never meet. I watched with my wife, who has not played the games. In the intro, where they show the woods, and you hear Anna breathing and running, even before you see her I KNEW it was Ashley because her voice is so iconic and so "Ellie". Normally this would be a distracting thing to do in an adaptation, because it's usually done as a cheeky cameo (think Stan Lee in all the Marvel films), but to have game Ellie give birth to series Ellie, but only as an emotional passing of the torch only fans will notice, is just pure genius. On top of that, the way they included as many performance capture cast so they didn't burn any bridges with the foundation of the series (the game) is just incredible.

As amazing as Pedro pascal and Bella Ramsey’s performances were, Ashley Johnson completely stole the show with the short amount of time she had. The way she said “her name is Ellie” was absolutely heartbreaking and says a thousand words. She’s such an underrated actress that deserves more roles on the big screen. Grew up with her on Ben 10 and very happy to see her career get bigger from there. And bravo HBO for one of the best adaptations we’ve gotten in years. Other studios and writers need to take notes, THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT. You can create new stuff that adds to the story such as the birth of Ellie, but you gotta keep the natural flow of the story and characters the same.
