Tess’s death is the most outright tragic one in the first game. She chose to give up her own life, not just because she doesn’t want to become a runner, but in the hopes that Joel and Ellie will go to the Fireflies and help create a cure, in order to delude herself into thinking that her life meant something. But because Joel prevented the cure, her death was absolutely meaningless like she feared

Not that I don't think the show version of this was good, but I really liked that line here where she says "Look, there's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me." I think that really summed up their relationship well in the game, where it was made a lot more subtle than them just outright cuddling in the first episode. It was nuanced and only hinted at; not necessarily romantic in the normal sense, but something intimate and much closer than between anyone else.
@drummerguy438 Жыл бұрын
Yes! This! Implying a strong connection takes her out of the “obligated romantic interest” it gives her more depth. The show pushed the romantic implication much harder. The other part I disagree with was the “kiss of death” moment. It kind of took away from the bravery of her last stand. Like, why have her last moments be a loss of bodily autonomy?

Yeah I'm really enjoying the show too. One detail I find strange in the show that they changed is Ellie isn't really wanting to be around Joel at all. Here she expresses gratitude, even though they're being paid she knows they're keeping her safe. But in the show she seems really rebellious, and at the end of ep. 2 she even yells at joel that she doesn't want to go with him. I'm guessing they're doing it that way to leave more room for a relationship to develop, but still feels like a weird choice given the circumstances they're in

I like how the game doesn't romanticize Tess's death. It's the cost of doing business in a world that's gone to hell like this. Death is just an everyday thing. You can still feel the emotion, but what's done is done. Tess isn't quivering or crying. She's already accepted her circumstances. She doesn't even go down in a cheesy blaze of glory. Without taking into account the... Uhm... Kiss, this is so much better. The dialogue is just superb in the original. "guess what, we're shitty people Joel" just conveys that desperation to find redemption in her final minutes so much better. "this is not us" It really shows just how absurd it is for Joel to take this task on. I'm glad the show is not a 1 for 1 retelling of this story, it would never surpass or even match the original if that's all it was. But I hope that if they keep reprising big moments like this that they at least consider more of what made the original so impactful.
@helloruiz Жыл бұрын
I think that Tess’s death in the show was done better than it was in the game. It did a better job of portraying a sense of urgency and sacrifice. Whereas in the game, all she did was stall for time against for force that Joel could’ve taken out himself. They’re both great nonetheless, and I appreciate the twist they put on the show in order to keep things fresh for veterans of the story.
@dylandog1289 Жыл бұрын
I think right now as of episode 2, I prefer the game performances because the chemistry is 100% there. I think that the show's characters are written darker, more jaded. I think both Joel and Ellie will get to their fun, relationship building moments for sure, but it's a slower build in the show. I respect the show's choice to make Joel and Tess' relationship a bit more of a "we don't love each other, but we need eachother" instead of a real romance. They really want Joel to be 100% emotionally detached from everything when he finally starts to care about Ellie.
@fergar0206 Жыл бұрын
@@dylandog1289 idk i felt the complete opposite. I think Tess and Joel's relationship being more apparent is indicative of him being more vulnerable in the show. Additionally almost right away they had that scene where he had a flashback of Sarah when they were being held at gunpoint. His reaction was a violent one, but it was born out of a protective instinct that I don't think was quite earned yet.
@fergar0206 Жыл бұрын
@@helloruiz think from a practical perspective given that Joel eventually does pretty much take everyone in the capitol on you're not wrong. This was much more clearer in the way that her sacrifice served the story. But as far as her trying to convince Joel to take Ellie to Tommy and revealing she had been bitten I just didn't feel it as deeply. Idk maybe I've watched that scene play out so many times it just feels weird watching a different version of it, but it feels like every line in this exchange betrays a little nuance in what's going on in everyone's heads. Here's one example: in this version she says this is her last stop, Joel reaches out towards her and she backs away not wanting to risk infecting Joel. This is what tips Ellie off and then she says that Tess is infected. In the show Tess says she's staying (which given the context i don't think is as good of a line) and Ellie out of nowhere says that Tess is infected. Joel looks confused and then Tess goes towards Joel and he's the one that backs away scared of getting infected by Tess. Subtle difference but it changes the tone for me. And just like that one there's a bunch of small changes that don't really make for a scene that moves me as much.

It's amazing acting to see how much Tess really loved and cared for Joel; even when she explains that they have to run, she doesn't even look at Ellie, but only focuses on him. And as soon as Joel speaks, she immediately interrupts and approaches him.

I like the pause before Ellie says Tess is infected. In the show she says it too fast, and what about Joel’s “IT IS OVER TESS” line?! So much better in the game but the show is pretty good overall
@dylandog1289 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that Anna Torv has turned in the best performance in the show so far, followed closely by Pedro (Troy's "It is OVER Tess!!!" is hard to beat). Bella has had some good moments, but she still seems a bit nervous acting out the part. She definitely seemed more relaxed and less "rehearsed" in episode 2. Can't wait for the Bill episode, Offerman is PERFECT as Bill.

I think in the show they are going for an ellie who is a tad bit trigger happy like a coping mechanism or somw sort In the game she gave the feeling that she was getting tired of the whole thing ( knowing her past and all that) Imo they both work depending on how they will handle it

@@daigneauray7087 ln the start of the game, you get through a checkpoint in the QZ well atleast try to since it was all blown by the fireflies anyways, in the original when tess handed the papers we couldnt see the information clearly but here in the remastered we can see the information on their ID's. That said she is probably Greek according to her name. Or lts probably a fake name because tess said "l got us all new papers.."

@@Mr_van_Der_Linde I never understood that. Wasn't the whole point of Joel's character that he was emotionally shattered by Sarah's death and therefore chose not to form emotional relationships with anyone else afterwards so as never to be hurt again? Hell, it seems like Tess was pretty much the same; she only pulled out the "you have an obligation to me" card when she had no other means of motivating him to help Ellie. I can't quite understand how she would have been moved to chase them across the whole of the country, especially considering how cautious she is about going on the "outside". Not to mention that having a defined antagonist, I feel, is kind of pointless in the kind of narrative that The Last of Us is built around.

This scene is SO much better acted than the show. The show is good enough, but it did not live up to this scene.
@mythra7174 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I think the show is OKAY, but not up to the performances the mo-cap actors did for the game. I realize it's a different medium and maybe some changes had to be made, but I think they did a better job acting for the game. The TV Tess was just not Tess. (And Sarah was too old, I think). A lot of the dialog in the show seems kind of rushed and it's just like they're reading their lines. Didn't like the Ellie immune reveal, either. Or when Joel was lying on the couch and Ellie asked what he was doing and he said "killing time." There were more pauses in the game dialog and it seemed like they just rushed through the TV dialog of the same scenes, if you get what I'm saying.

I don't like that. I like the feeling that it's just you, a lot of emptiness and a couple of these creatures. Hope they don't hear you.. This I think will get boring very fast. Step on fungus, horde comes running, step on fungus, horde comes running. How long will that be exciting for?
