I like how this game doesn't just forget her. It's a shame we didn't see her final moments, but later in the game you can hear one of the soldiers talking about how Tess took down two of their men before she died. A fighter until the end.
@Montesama31410 жыл бұрын
In the rest of the game, too, Ellie continually brings up Tess's death to talk about with Joel. He keeps brushing it off, but you can just tell it's eating him up inside. Months after her death, and the character still has some lasting impact. THAT is how a death of a secondary character is supposed to be portrayed. She wasn't just some throwaway role, she was a character that did something and meant something.
@themevrouwdewi10 жыл бұрын
Montesama314 Exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've had to sit through a character death that was only good for some manpain, but Naughty Dog really did her justice by continuously bringing her up and showing the struggle that both Ellie and Joel had after losing her. Still too bad, but I suppose accidents happen in an apocalypse.

Brad Montague That's nonsense. The "intelligence" was not the main villain. It was the Leviathan, who created the Catalyst a billion years ago, which in turn created the Reapers, who was the main villain. You are still going by the ending presented by the original cut, but the Extended Cut and Leviathan DLC clears up all that. Yeah, I know that's cheap compared to the masterful storytelling of this game, but the ME series is one of the best stories in gaming history if you absorb it all.

Amen. Also, in spite of being flawed and hardened by years of surviving in a world where you can die anytime Tess still feels so relatable and human. Like, I can imagine what her life and personality were like before the pandemic without having to have a flashback moment where I'm forced to play as her for 5 hours straight to see she was once an ordinary person with dreams and some people she cared for. *THAT'S WHAT A WELL WRITTEN CHARACTER IS LIKE* -- Abby is boring, and I felt zero investment in her character during the parts of the game where you're forced to suffer through her side of the story. Her entire existence is just so the game can preach its moral lesson about why revenge is bad.
@KenoSNeal4 жыл бұрын
@@laracroftvideos Exactly. The second game just feels like it has lost its own point. I said this in a review, and it is that tlou part one was a character driven game that was bias. The game worked that way. Telling a two sided story in this installment wasn't a good idea in my opinion. Because it feels like the developers were trying to make tlou part two Abby's game. It just makes no sense at all when all the advertising and build up from the first installment focused on Joel and Ellie. No one gives a damn about Abby. Her decisions in the game were understandable yes, but that doesn't make her likable. We haven't had time to invest in her character. There are so many things wrong with the game. All of the forced messages that could have easily been sumed into the story if it was written well, all the corny dialog, the boring scenes, the story structure was all a mess. But like you said, good writing could have saved this game. Everyday I think of ways they could have changed the story. Oh well. Just another failed sequel unfortunately.

And btw if someone ever says "why can't a woman have a strong natural body like that instead of a hypersexual body" note that Abby was designed based of off a female crossfitter who as we all know are neck deep in steroids and PEDs. So no it isn't natural
@weaverquest4 жыл бұрын
@@KenoSNeal None of the characters in TLOU are "likeable" that's not the point of the game. Both Joel and Tess were cynical shitty people and the way they were living their life smuggling crap for money is completely uninteresting to the audience. It really is up for debate whether Tess is a "strong female character" at all. She is a capable survivor but that's mostly it. If she didn't get the death sentence from the bite, she and Joel might or might not have cancelled the deal and turned back home deeming the job too dangerous despite the high payment. The reason we like Joel and Tess here is because they are compelling and realistic characters and the best creative decision about Tess is that she didn't overstay her welcome by dying off early and the bite made her "sacrifice" more believable. In contrast Abby was integral the core of the story in Part II and I actually enjoyed my time playing as Abby (not least because her gameplay is really fun and her part of the story had some incredible set pieces). Reflecting back on the story months later, I appreciate it even more. I started off despising Abby and rooting for Ellie to kill her and all.her friends one by one but during her part seeing how she was being haunted by nightmares of the day Joel killed her father and all the other fireflies made me understand her struggle and realise she was in the same boat Ellie was in, the characters I was rooting for. Part II does an incredible job testing players' biases and how well they can see the other side of the conflict. But the best part of the story is that it is a "revenge is bad" story only on the very surface level. It is a story mostly about how you deal with loss and that goes for both Ellie and Abby. When Tommy said Joel wouldn't go after WLF if the places were switched he was probably right as Joel never tried to go after the people who ordered to kill Sarah. Such a devastating loss probably made him the cynical and ruthless man he was at the beginning of TLOU 1 but he found his humanity 20 years later by taking care of Ellie. Abby was being haunted by nightmares about the day Joel killed her father and all the fireflies and she thought taking revenge on Joel would be the answer but it didn't stop her nightmares. It made everything worse as Tommy and Ellie killed all her close friends one by one trying to reach her. In the game you can see however that Abby's nightmares stopped after she saved Yara and Lev and she found hope again which was a similar arc Joel went through. To me the themes go much deeper than just "revenge is bad" for these reasons. Ellie also lost almost everything in the pursuit of revenge and the ending of the game was rather depressing as hell but that's what I really like about the game. Most revenge stories reach its conclusion when the main character kills the antagonist in the most satisfying way possible to the audience but instead, TLOU Part II instead leaves the player depressed and hopeless. Personally I really like the story of both but Part II is a much more though provoking game and even more of an emotional rollercoaster imo.

look here's how a main character dies. They sacrifice themselves and go out fighting.
@MirrenTheDragonKnight4 жыл бұрын
You are not owed a heroic sacrifice just because you are a main character. In addition, male characters almost always get heroic sacrifices while females are mainly already died or died/are killed passively (Sarah from the very same game is an example). It is about time that was reversed more. Yes, I know I sound like a feminist, but I am just sick to death of the people demanding Joel should have gone out in what would have been such a cliche, trite way for a character like him. It is still bullshit how he died though, as they made him (and Tommy) into OOC idiots to do so.

@mitchellbenford38964 жыл бұрын
I don't think TLOU2 was that bad. It showed Ellie's descent into darkness and how Joel's death made her vindictive and made her do things that she regretted and made her horrified. She let Abby go because she realized she killed so many people just for one person and realized that vengeance cost more than the rewards. Ellie lost her girlfriend, her friends, her son, and most importantly, her humanity because of it. She let Abby go not because it was right, but because it was what she needed to do to start healing. People say Mel was stupid for going between Ellie and Owen, but her boyfriend was dying and she was not thinking. Ellie did regret killing her because she was pregnant. Nora's death was the one that made her really question her actions because Abby is gone and her friends love her enough. I think when Ellie told Abby Dina was pregnant, she was reminded of Mel and wanted to fix her bad deed. I think Naughty Dog did a great job because they never used plot armor and showed characters their humanity and showed the prices we pay for revenge.

My favorite thing about this game was how it showed in a time of apocalypse and infected zombie killer creatures; it shows that humanity can become the worst Monster of all. Like how we all turned on each other, predators of the living, stealing, killing, and disregarding life in the struggle to survive. What makes "Us" scarier then the infected was the fact that we did these atrocities with free will and conscious in tack... While on the other hand, "the infected" had no control over what they did and became.. Its a striking commentary on human morality in crisis. The Last of Us was very ironic in that way. And "The Last of Us" can be found in what Tommy's group was trying to do at the damn... trying to preserve the Last of Our moralities, and what we once had and were as human beings. IMHO, this game is a masterpiece in storytelling. LoU2 will have a lot to live up to.

For me this scene presents a very interesting point, and fans don't always give it the attention it deserves. Tess, infected and about to die, had the opportunity to reflect on her life and what she had become: a cruel, ruthless, selfish, and purposeless person. Taking Ellie to the Fireflies and finding the cure was no longer just a job, it was her last chance at redemption after who knows how many bad deeds in the past. For Tess, turning Ellie over and finding the cure was the only way the last years of her life would have any meaning. The only way that her death would have any meaning. And Ellie I think understood that to some degree, hence her survivor's guilt for Tess's death. And Joel I think also understood it to a certain extent, that his possible ex-or-current lover needed them to find a vaccine for cordyceps so that her death would not be meaningless. That is why she entrusted this mission to Joel, begging him to do it. Joel understood all of that, and yet he put Ellie's life before Tess's dying wishes. That's very, very interesting and I think it adds another layer of gray to Joel. That he would betray the last, dying wishes of a possible lover for the sake of his adopted daughter. And it reminds us again that Ellie was the first and most important thing for him, above everyone, even Tess. Above the entire world.

Tess had more of a believable and genuine arc in 2 hours than Abby had in 10 hours. Abby feels guilty that she did what she did even though Joel saved her life. That guilt drives her to go back for Yara and Lev because they saved her life but its not like they wronged her the way Joel did...... it just didn't feel genuine. Tess starts out like Joel: jaded, hopeless, always focused, and ruthless. The second she discovers Ellie's immune, we start to see her become emotionally vulnerable as her hope for a cure drives her to get to the Capitol. Even when they find that one Firefly shot in the ally outside the Capitol building, she still holds out hope. The second she sees all the Fireflies dead, she uses that emotional vulnerability to drive Joel to get her to Tommy's. She starts out hopeless and believing in nothing but surviving and goes out hopeful with something to die for. Would love to play a game as Tess but after Part 2 I'm sure they'll just character assassinate her.

If Joel would’ve known that was the daughter of the doctor he killed he would’ve not saved her… btw Abby spared Ellie & Dina after seeing all her friends dead. So obviously she learned after killing Joel, revenge is just going to lead to more revenge & it didn’t make her feel better at all.
