I LOVE the shot that stays on Ellie's face at the end. At first, there is just hesitation and uncertainty about the stitches working & Joel staying alive. But her face can't help but betray some hope & excitement that this thing just might work. EXCELLENT work from Bella Ramsey. And shout-out to Storm Reid, cuz that ending speech & them crying in each other's arm is just heartbreaking.

Its funny how bella and storm are actually the same age (both born in 2003, ironically the year the apocalypse started) and storm pulls off being older, bc she is alot taller.

In this episode, they don't specifically say that Ellie hilled Riley, but think back a couple episodes to where Ellie shot the boy who was killing Joel. Joel apologized to Ellie for putting her in a position where she had to make her first kill. Ellie said that it wasn't her first and then declined to go into any detail about it. Today we learned that Rileyh was her first.

It's heavily implied in both the game and show that Ellie killed Riley. They both are bitten and assume they will turn into Infected, so they "wait it out" together. As he says in the reaction, they would have stayed together until the end, and then Riley would have turned but Ellie did not, and Infected Riley would have attacked Ellie.

In the game/DLC, Ellie and Riley had explored this mall many times before when they were both at Fedra, and they never encountered any Infected during those previous trips, so they felt safe here. It explains why they feel it's safe to play some music and have a dance party. But in the show, this is the first time Ellie has been to this mall. Riley has been here for a few days, but probably hasn't made any noise that would wake up that Runner.

I think the reason the carousel doesn't go up and down is because it would be a pain in the ass to film the shots they did.

Its kind of interesting that we never see the passage of time where Ellie gets caught by Fireflies and eventually meeting Joel. What informed someone's decision to spare Ellie's life after discovering the bite,? Its possible Ellie managed to hide the bite from the Fireflies for a short while.

I have a feeling they might show us some of that moment at the end of the season, or at least go into how Marlene came to drop Ellie off at the orphanage.

In the game Ellie tells Tess that after she was bit at the mall she went to see Marlene and explained how she hadn't turned. Marlene then decided to take Ellie to their base in Eastern Colorado to see if Ellie's immunity could create a cure/vaccine. When Joel and Tess see Ellie's wound for the first time she says that she was bitten 2 weeks ago. In the show Ellie doesn't know Marlene before the show starts - I think the Fireflies just randomly capture her and realize that she's been bitten but hasn't turned yet, and then Marlene realizes that it's Ellie (Marlene knows Ellie but not vice versa).

Quite true. The thing I love about this show is that, unlike conventional apocalyptic dramas where we just follow the characters around, LoU is like stand-alone stories that shows us many faces.

I wish they had inadvertantly stepped on a tendril of fungus in the Halloween store and _that_ had alerted the infected. They introduced the concept that there are networks of tendrils in Episode 2 (which wasn't in the game) then they haven't used that new bit of lore. It would have been easy here.

@@jp3813 It didn't seem like it was tracking them by sound to me. It wasn't running to every sound in the mall. It awoke when they were in the noisy arcade, but it didn't find them there. Then they had a loud fight, nothing came. Then there was a human-sounding scream from the Halloween shop that drew Ellie's attention, but nada from the infected. Then, loud music that Ellie and Riley danced to...no infected. Then there was a quiet kiss, and there it was (seemingly in the back room of that store?).

I think how fast ellie parrots the captain's words just because he acted in a positive way with her shows her age well, ellie is obviously very smart, but at that age having someone in a powerfull position give you a pep talk will get to you

I love this show, and your reactions were great! The Ellie and Reilly story is so sad. Having gone through the dlc iirc, it is implied that poor Ellie had to defend herself from infected Reilly. I think the ptsd of that may have had something to do with Ellie having such a hard time defending herself from infected Sam. Like in her mind she was screaming "Not again, no no no! Great episode!

I don't think Ellie's interaction with Infected Sam had anything to do with her interaction with Infected Riley. When Infected Sam attacks her it's out of the blue - she isn't armed and isn't expecting it. She's able to hold off Sam to keep him from biting her long enough for Joel to try to save her, and then for Henry to actually save her.

I think this episode was another case of spending just a bit too much time on the ‘flashback’. I’ve enjoyed playing the DLC this episode is based on but I found this segment of the show just a tad boring, if I’m honest. If the series was say 12 episodes I wouldn’t be so concerned about the pacing but with only two episodes to go it’s gonna feel rushed……however, episode 8 is easily the best so far I reckon!

I thought this episode was good but definitely the weakest of the show. Not the best writing but not horrible. That being said the saving grace of the episode is the two truly outstanding performances by Bella and Storm who simply elevate the material theyre given.

I feel like this has been the weakest episode of the series, maybe because it's difficult to identify with teenage girls, I dunno, just never grabbed me like the others have. I understand it's valuable back story but I feel like the only important parts are the bookends to main story.
