In the game, Riley proves she’s a Firefly by showing her ID tags. When Ellie says “Don’t go” she rips them off and throws them away without a word.

this whole episode was based on dlc for the first game. we didnt get to know how ellie was bitten until 6 months after the game first came out, and it had you playing as ellie looking for medical supplies in a mall as the framing device. i think it was a good move to just include it in the show proper.

I have to disagree. This ultimately did nothing to further the story that couldn't be explained with a simple conversation like the one between Joel and Henry. This is the second time they set aside an entire episode for a distraction from the plot line, and both had a common theme. There's a reason why this segment was a DLC for the game; it just wasn't necessary.

@@subj3kt172 Doesn't that depend on what the story is? It's called "The Last of Us" not "Cordyceps: the not so Fun Guys". The story, to me, is about how people we know and care about die in this world and how we deal with those deaths or near deaths when they were averted. It's a pretty significant part of THAT story.

Good call remembering the mall mention! It came up when Tess asked, you guessed it, how Ellie got bit. Though notably: Ellie claimed to have snuck in there alone. However, Riley has been mentioned once! When the fireflies had Ellie locked up in the very beginning she called Marlene a terrorist, to which Marlene asked if she thought the same of Riley. The emotion Ellie showed in her voice after that was really the first vulnerability we saw from her.

Nice reaction, Addie. This episode of The Last of Us gives us a backstory on Ellie before she met Joel. Her friendship with Riley was very sweet and that moment after they fought an infected was heartbreaking. BTW, nice cold open. Even I'm not ready for what's next.

I think Ellie had to kill Riley because she turned, remember when Ellie told Joel it wasn’t her first time but refused to say more in ep4? And the mall was firefly weapons stash and that’s where they find bitten Ellie and dead Riley.

Very touching episode. I can't imagine being bitten and that sudden realization you are going to die. I definitely would have lost my temper like Ellie. Riley was so calm about it. Its horrible. After what happened with Riley there's no way Ellie's going to give up on Joel. I hope HBO doesn't 🙏 I haven't played the game. However Iv seen GOT So I'm very worried for season 2 On a happier note Ellie is such an adorable kid. Even when she's angry. Bella Ramsey is doing an amazing job. I forgot she is actually 19. I grew up in the 80's so love anytime we get some of that vibe. All you need to make a dark creepy abandoned mall less scary is Neon lights, 80's music and arcade games with lots of free quarters. It's even better if you're with the person you love.

Heartbreaking and brutal similarities for Joel and Ellie. Both have suffered greatly from survivors guilt. 14:21 ... "...only I didn't say fudge." hahahaha I was rolling when I heard you say that and I loved the reference!! The countdown for the next episode has already begun. Any jump scare and snake scare that she has or any time she gets very stressed &/or anxious are the best parts of her reactions. And anytime she reacts to a scary movie or any suspenseful movie that has her on-edge or high-strung, I give her a round of applause for getting through that movie.

Since Riley was posted at the mall, they probably stayed there until Riley turned and Ellie had to kill her. Then the Fireflies came looking for Riley, and that's when the found Ellie had been bitten but hadn't turned so they locked her up for observation.

Thing is, there’d be no reason for Marlene to be there when they pick Riley up, and the 24hr maximum incubation period wouldn’t be up yet, so they wouldn’t know for sure Ellie’s immune yet, and they’d have no reason not to kill her. Little plot hole I guess.

They stay together while they turn, problem is Elle doesn't turn. So yeah Elle has to shoot Riley once she reilzed she never turned. The mall was a Firefly base (they thought there were no infected there). So once they came to check on Riley they found her dead with Elle. Remember Marline said that she is the reason Elle was put in the fedra school cause she promised her mother to watch over that. This is why when Riley asked Marlene is Elle can come she said no. This is also why the Fire flies didn't shoot Elle on site after realizing she was bitten. The reason we don't see Rily's end is because this is a memory for Elle. She doesn't want to realive it even in a memory so the audience never sees it. She even tell s joel she doesn't want to talk about it when she explains that she has shot someone before.

My daughter cried at the end of this episode b/c I just had a partial intestine removal surgery in November and i spent a week connected to artificial lines in the hosp begging to be discharged so i can just die at home (hosp sent a Chaplain to me everyday). My daughter visited me every break she got at the Univ. I finally got home, but I was bed ridden in pain for nearly a month and she had to do everything for me. I didnt get to walking on my own and back at work until Jan this year.

I don't think they are going to show what happened in the mall after that scene but it's heavily implied by their conversation that Riley ends up turning and Ellie ends up killing her. They may have a scene with Ellie and Joel where it's discussed but I doubt we'll get a flashback for it.

I suspect this will be one of those things that is never clearly answered but left for the viewer to imagine. Any scenario is awful.

In episode 1 Marlene was asking if Riley was a terrorist, after Ellie called the Fireflies that. In episode 2 Tess was asking how she got bit anyway and Ellie said she snuck into the sealed mall. Tess follows up by asking if she was alone and Ellie confirmed this with a sad tone. In episode 3 Ellie was kinda resentful towards the stalker stuck under the rubble. In episode 4 Ellie told Joel that Bryan wasn't her first time killing someone. I'm a little disappointed with this one, because of the removal of the arcade scene from the game, one of the most iconic and meaningful scenes that showed Ellie's vivid imagination (if you're curious: /watch?v=a8XgByLIe9w), which is very much a precursor to another very iconic scene in Part 2. With all the Left Behind references in the previous episodes I also kinda expected to see Ellie having to shoot Riley, but instead they just ended it pretty much like the DLC did, leaving the rest up to imagination. It's still heavily implied that she had to kill her. Most importantly though she stayed with her until the end, and now also decided not to leave Joel and stay with him until the end. If they went with option 1, then Ellie would be dead and no one would have ever known about her immunity.

I’ve seen you a few times now. This comment is well articulated. I agree with pretty much all of what you said. I didn’t realize the stalker bit from 3, thanks! I didn’t mind them changing the arcade part, probably couldn’t do the game version justice. I think they could still do the scene in Part II though. Personally, I don’t know why they removed Riley’s tags - feels like that would have been better all around. The bricks! Ellie throwing bricks was iconic in the game! If there was one place to include that it was this episode.

Not my favorite episode, but I'll say this: Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid absolutely killed it in the acting department. In fact, all the young actors who've been on the show have been great; from Nico Parker right down to Keivonn Woodard, there hasn't been a weak performance in the bunch.

I do believe that Ellie had to kill Riley. Probably, and the one involving the most heartbreak, Riley realizes Ellie isn't infected, and she asks Ellie to kill her so she doesn't kill Ellie. It makes sense in light of Ellie's questions about if the infected are still human inside, and the callbacks to Bill and Frank, along with Sam turning and attacking her after she tried to save him but she also broke her promise and fell asleep... damn, our girl Ellie has HUGE trauma!

Don't even have to go back that far. In the last episode Ellie told Joel, "...everyone I've ever known or loved has either left me or died..." It was pretty clear to me Riley wasn't getting out of this episode alive.

@@SummitSummit It would have been more believable if we had more examples of people leaving Ellie than just Marlene. Game version of Ellie got passed around between FEDRA members who didn’t want to be her guardian. Kwong here would have been a good opportunity to include something like that.

16:13 Bella Ramsey killed this scene. The excitement of killing her first infected thinking both of them got away unscathed into immediate frustration and guttural rage. She may not look exactly like Ellie from the game but she's killing the performance.

2:05-2:10 Remember when Bill was shot in Episode 3, and he was telling Frank "Call Joel. He'll take care of you." ? Bill never really considered Joel a "friend" but he cared enough about Frank that he was telling him to call Joel, and he knew Joel to be a good enough man that he'd help Frank. He thought he was going to die, and wanted Frank to be safe. Joel is trying to send Ellie back to Tommy, because he knows Tommy will take care of Ellie, and he doesn't believe there's any way he's going to survive. 8:29-8:33 I remember the first time I was old enough to have grown so I could reach all the way across the escalator, put one hand on each of the 2 rail belts, and lift myself to travel down without touching the steps. Ellie's wonder at the escalator being the first time she's ever seen one and being notably older, well presented. 11:04-11:10 You are thinking of Episode 2, with Tess. It was followed by Tess saying Ellie has balls. Ellie also claimed she went into the mall alone, just her in there. It does strike me how naturally it came to Ellie to hit the coin return buttons. She was born about 6 years after the outbreak. Sure this was common practice in arcades back in the day, but how did she know? Riley planned all this out with one of 2 goals in mind, saying goodbye to Ellie, so they at least got to say goodbye, if Ellie didn't feel as Riley did; or to confirm Ellie shared the same feelings and to stay with Ellie if she wanted her to. She was dropping hints, subtle probes, trying to find out which way it would be. Riley knew if Ellie wanted her to stay she would. She even asked about Ellie joining the Fireflies (or at least claimed she asked) to show she doesn't want this to be the end. After they're bitten, Riley doesn't want to give up another minute with Ellie, but you know she has to have the feeling "if I had not been so determined to see her again, to find out how she felt and to give her a last memory before I said goodbye, I wouldn't have just killed the only person who matters to me." At this point neither of them know Ellie is immune. Since Ellie's bite is 3 weeks old when she's handed to Joel and Tess, this has been a very trying few months for Ellie. 1st she loses her best friend for weeks, with no idea she's even still alive, then her best friend shows back up, takes her out to create some wonderful memories before saying goodbye, they finally express to each other some aspect of how they feel for each other, her best friend dies or turns, she expects to die or turn. Gets chained up for 10+ days, gets handed off to Joel and Tess. Tess gets left behind after being bitten, blows up. They go where Tess said she'd be safe, they're dead. travels cross country and meets Henry and Sam, tries to save Sam, they both die. She travels for 3 months with Joel on foot, find Tommy. Joel tries to hand her over to Tommy, but Joel gives her a choice, she chooses Joel, now Joel is telling her to leave him and go back to Tommy and let Joel die. (And remember that Kwong told her she'd never been "well behaved" but these last few weeks? Ellie was already going through a lot by the time of the incident with Bethany.

It somehow just occurred to me that Kwong’s “last few weeks” comment about Ellie’s behaviour is her acting out because Riley disappeared. Also, Ellie’s “not my first time” comment about shooting someone implies she killed Riley with her own gun.

Another great episode, they did a good job of exploring Ellie's crush on Riley. Bella again did a sterling job at acting, even though she was wearing a mask, you knew exactly what she was thinking. I wasn't particularly convinced with Storm's portrayal of Riley though, maybe it's because there's such a contrast in acting styles.

I think last episode wants you to assume Joel dies. I think this episode wants you to assume Joel will be okay.

Another great episode with a lot of character development for Ellie. Some obviously, some hidden. In any case, many questions are answered here directly and indirectly. Riley chose Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka. Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. I think it's clear she stabbed her. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible. Previous episode, Ellie wanted a sip of liquor from Joel and said "still gross". This was her first time. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and her brother, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. I actually thought Ashley Johnson (OG Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale. Next episode Troy Baker (OG Joel) will get his cameo.
