So here are some controversial opinions... do you agree? Disagree?
‪@what_valerie_makes‬ mentioned the pins and it just got me thinking about things other people just seem to love that I cannot compute 😂
This is all meant in the spirit of good fun, so tell me what your things are. Am I saying what you're thinking... or am I just an annoying whinger?!

My curiosity is out of control, please share the 6th one. Great video. I love pockets as long as they are anchored. Pins are a necessary evil, they usually get me when sewing a set in sleeve bc it’s a curve or on a small gathered sleeve opening. We don’t get the BEE in the USA, and I do agree with you.

😂 😂 😂 Anchoring pockets where possible does make all the difference, though I once did that with ribbons inside a coat lining and whilst in theory it was a good idea, I didn't execute it well and it ended up pulling at the front of the coat. Cue some unpicking 🤦🏻‍♀️ Flapping pockets really do drive me mad though, so I'll try again next time I make a coat and hopefully get better at making everything lie flat with practise!

Oh and a tip on the blood on the garments (it’s from my friend who is a bridal seamstress). To remove blood stain you use saliva. But it has to be your own - the enzymes in your spit break down the enzymes in the blood and as if by magic the stain is gone!

I'm with you in a lot of these! 1) I do love pockets but I leave them out if the material is lighter, they always pull somehow. 2) And who needs more drama, get straight to the sewing. 3) pins are a necessary evil 4) I sometimes reduce the seam allowance in curved seams, makes it a lot easier to set in the sleeve! 5) same! I did see a tip where someone embroidered a little label of sorts, something like "handmade in 2024" somewhere out of the way, like on the hem, and I thought that was cool.

Mine(that I dont understand with the sewing community) is the urge to buy new Indie patterns as soon as the are released. Most of which one can very easily recreate with their bodice blocks because they are literally simple and all the Indie patterns now look alike. Okay, you nailed it with all of these! My mother always liked pockets in her skirts, but I never saw the point. And as for the Sewing Bee, how is it even called that?? A “bee” is where people (typically neighbors) just come together to hang out and help each other complete a certain task. The word itself is a derivative of the Middle English word “bene”. It’s not a competition where you eliminate people when they aren’t up to snuff. Historically, anyway. Maybe I’m *that* girl who gets hung up on semantics, I don’t know. 😂 And I stab myself on pins regularly. The stabs are my battle scars!

1) no pockets in dresses, and still wash my pants with tissue in the pocket😑 2) in Canada, so can't see the Bee, but not even interested in the 'find the pattern' videos 3) I often put my pins an inch or more to the left of the seam to keep them away from the needle, but they don't bug me; however the clips, which i love,...you are so right with the clanking and pulling of material 4) any seam allowance is fine, just tell me in BIG writing 5) I cut my own labels from the selvedge of very soft knit fabrics. I would never sew in a stiff label, cute as they are. Pretty much agree with you on most 🙂

Pockets....depends on the garment. Sometimes yes and for anything sorta fitted....nope when you sit the gape and ruin the look. 5/8" seam allowance.....I have been sewing for over 60 years and back then the big 4 were the only patterns, they fit better, they had better instructions, and wonderful finishing details. Also the 5/8 allows for multiple seam finishes like French seams, flat felled seams. If you pinked the seams you had enough to cut off. Back then servers were not a thing for the home sewest so finishing the seams to avoid fraying was very important. I love a French seam finish myself and it requires 5/8.
@alwaysinthecraftroom
@alwaysinthecraftroom 3 күн бұрын

I like somewhere to put my hands when I'm just standing around. Pins are a pain. You usually don't need as many as you think. Clips are a pain, too. Perhaps the 5/8" seam allowance comes from the pre-overlocker era. I still do a lot of flat-fell and French seams, so I often use 5/8" allowances.

This might be the best argument yet for pockets, my whole family do impressions of my with my hands on my hips because apparently it is my preferred stance when waiting around! Yes larger SAs are good for other seam finishes, I shouldn't be so lazy overlocking anything and everything 😂

That was entertaining and I agree with most of what you said. Labels drive me crazy and I do unpick them in ready to wear. I hate the feel of them and they often stick up when you're wearing them. I also hate the drama and rush on all tv shows, especially on the Sewing Bee. It's supposed to be about sewing skill and not about how fast you work. I wish they would focus on how well something is sewed instead. I do enjoy the show and like back stories. As with the 5/8" seam allowance, I think that may have started with the big 4 patterns when a pattern was one size only to give you a little wiggle room for adjustments. I enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.
@alwaysinthecraftroom
@alwaysinthecraftroom Күн бұрын
Aha, 5/8th SA makes a lot more sense if you only get one size in a pattern, because I would likely buy for my hips and need to let out at the waist. Back when Style Arc only had one size on a sheet I got out of the habit of buying them, as even though they included one size up and down they were on separate files and I wasn't going to print all that a trace, when multi-size patterns mean I can 'join the dots' between two sizes. The rush on the sewing bee is so annoying isn't it, and they talk a lot about 'sustainability' but then make all these rushed items that you know never get worn again. It would almost be better if they sent them all home for a week and then they could really take their time and do some excellent sewing.
@kathymcconville6428
@kathymcconville6428 Күн бұрын
@@alwaysinthecraftroom I love the idea of sending them home to make something well instead of seeing the messes they currently make. Or maybe judge them on how well their sewing was and not count off for not finishing. It's really just a game show with sewist rather than a sewing show, I feel.

The sewing bee, I don't watch since the first season I think and get asked all the time if I love it, well no for all the reasons you noted. Labels again why add, although I did have some made for my handmade bags for the outside as a finishing touch but quite pricey so that may have been a one off. The seams I don't mind. Gimicky gadgets bug me, like the bias binding maker just do it on your ironing board, really how much bias strip do you need?? Have a great evening. ☺

Yes people always assume us garment makers love the sewing bee, don’t they, but I think it’s actually more appealing to people who don’t sew. Which makes sense because I guess that is the majority! lol at the bias binding maker, I can’t believe the price of it! I don’t use or make bias all that often to be honest, the occasional project like my recent Georgia’s Portfolio mellow top, but like you say, it was pretty quick to make on my ironing board. I bet things get out of alignment and twisted up all the time too… plus getting it out and putting it away, much more hassle than it’s worth I bet!

My pin tip is less about the pin and more about how you hold your garment while sewing the seam. It shouldn’t be hanging down and curving over the edge of your machine. If you support the fabric and keep it as level as possible - or maybe try and get a larger extension table to support the fabric.

The Sewing Bee annoys me so much I can’t watch it, Patrick Grant knows nothing, he can’t sew for toffee, hard no from me. I love Masterchef with a passion, what can I say, I like a good story. My pet peeve is the rise of PDFs and flippin’ ‘expansion packs’ when you factor in printing patterns cost a kings ransom. Remember back when you’d buy a pattern with three or four views for a reasonable cost? And don’t get me started on Tilly and the buttons, I’d be here all day. lol

Gosh how do you do it with no pins? I'm getting better with practise but I'd love to eliminate them altogether. And pockets, is it all about the understitching? That's another skill I need to improve for sure. Yes I'd be annoyed to pay again for a pattern I've already paid for once 😏

I wear fit and flare jersey dresses every season, every occasion, and i used to love having pockets until i realised that using my pockets distorts my dress and ruins the waist and neckline. Since I've started making my dresses, I've purposefully omitted the pockets.

I do love a dress I find them much comfier than separates! Filled pockets do pull down and ruin the line of the garment I agree.

I also don’t understand the need for the overlocker, I never finish my seams, unless it is a fabric that really unravels. They just don’t get worn enough that I have to worry. And it seems to me like the purpose of the overlocker is to make it look machine made. the clothing industry used overlockers in my opinion to make it faster and also to use junk fabrics.

Interesting, and fair enough! I put everything on quite a high spin on my washing machine, as we don't use a dryer, so I'm not sure unfinished seams would survive. Do you find it a problem when you wash garments? I'm fascinated!

Hi… I’m new here! Just watched this and well… yes 😂 Pockets… I like a pocket I have to admit. Sewing Bee… I like the back stories tbh, but not so much the refashioning section. Also, if they gave a bit more time for all of the challenges then surely all the garments would be much better and wearable? Pins… yes. I use them all the time and sometimes I do use wonderclips too. Labels… it’s a no from me and I’ve always wondered why people put them in their handmade garments. It might be a sensory thing with me but any rtw clothes and they get cut out. I do love the look of them and there’s definitely a place for them in bags and accessories for sure. Seam allowance… I’m a 1cm seam allowance girl if I’m honest. Xxx

Yes it seems such a shame that all the finishing is so bad because of time constraints, I just wish they packed less into each programme! I really think 1cm is perfect, easier for easing, easy for the overlocker, and a bit of wiggle room if something's a bit tight ☺️

This really made me laugh…you’ve missed your vocation as a stand up comedian. As for the Sewing Bee, it was worth it this week to witness Patrick’s squirrel impression.😂🤣. One thing that irritates me is people who post images/ videos on Facebook or instagram of the third or forth item they’ve made THIS WEEK, with a view of their perfect sewing room in the background. Envy ? 🤔

Lol thank you! Maybe I need to just check out the squirrel impression, I am most intrigued! I'm guilty of the ridiculous sewing room (I know, so lucky and there is a long backstory, isn't there always with me?!) but a finished item every week? Ha ha lol no... see this week's Friday sews, I'm STILL talking about the same dress as last week and it's STILL not finished 😂

I really enjoyed this! I do love pockets but I don't have a problem with people who don't although I don't want them flapping around. I am also a 1 cm person and just can't work in imperial anyway. I am also with you on labels. I don't really like all that whimsical stuff and I am guaranteed to forget to put them into my clothes and yes, I would find them itchy too. But Sewing Bee - I think you have a point, but I still love it although I do wish they would spend more time showing the sewing and less flicking from one sewer to another. Some of us do actually have an attention span greater than that of a gnat. And please, can the ghastly puns, they really aren't funny.

So true about the attention span thing, just when I’m getting into something on normal tv they always say, “and we’ll come back to that a bit later” and ironically, that is what makes me lose interest! Just stick to the subject matter, we tuned in because we are actually interested 🙄

Pockets 😂 I have a love hate with them too I will miss them out most of the time but then I’m on the train and just want to shove my phone in there for a second and realise I didn’t add any 😅. Sewing bee I love watching but the time constraints and the mess they end up with annoys me too like half of what they make will just end up in the bin! I use clips and pins depending on the fabric but a lot of the time I just wing it and don’t even use them 😂 seam allowances I will often ignore as 5/8 is massive I end up using 3/8 most of the time or just the width of my sewing foot. Labels are a must for me, most of the time I can’t tell front from back 😂 also I love how they look in my husbands shirts…makes me preen they look professional 🤣 Be brave and tell me the 6th one!

Pockets are useful for phones the odd time aren't they, though whenever I do it with a coat (always on the train like you - so I can use my mobile ticket to get through to the platform and then I shove it in my pocket) five minutes later I'm always FRANTICALLY searching my handbag thinking I've lost it until I remember where it is 😂 Maybe I need to get on board with the labels since I do have trouble telling the front from back!!! I usually end up having to look which way I pressed my side seams (always towards the back) but maybe I could try heat set vinyl or something as knowing at a glance without the itch factor would be amazing!

I love pockets, for my bicycle keys, my hands, handkerchief because I don’t like carrying a bag. What I don’t understand is all the fuzz when a pattern doesn’t have pockets…just add them yourself. It’s so simple. I love watching the British sewing bee, but hate the time constraint. I’ve been using pins for 40 years and occasionally I will hurt myself, but I don’t like clips. I draft my own patterns or use patterns from Burda or Knipmode, they don’t have a seem allowance. So I am free to chose my own seem allowance and I think making pattern adaptations or simple measuring or comparing the pattern with a well fitting piece of clothing is easier that way. I sew for customers and then I will put my label in, but a label that can be easily removed, because I really dislike labels. Sometimes it’s handy for my customers to easily distinguish between front and back of the garment. What I don’t understand is people using a coverstitch machine and creating really wonky seams in a thread colour that doesn’t really match the garment. They’ll buy a perfect matching thread for the project but the most visible stitching they will use their big non matching overlocker cones. And getting good results with a coverstitch machine really requires a lot of practice especially on knits.

Ah yes, if you don't carry a bag I can see pockets are a must! I take so much stuff with me when I leave the house (lip balm, tissues, hand cream, keys, miniature shopping bag, emergency hair clips 😂) I always have a bag. Choosing your own seam allowance is probably ideal, because you get to pick depending on the fabric and what you are sewing - 5/8th on a collar is just torture! That's so thoughtful of you to put customer labels in such that they can be easily removed, thank you for thinking of us sensitive types! Oh gosh I couldn't overstitch in a non-matching thread, nooooo! I often wind bobbins of 'normal' thread for the needles and just use cones on the looper. It does mean you have to sew more slowly and keep an eye on those bobbins as sometimes they get hung up and it all goes wrong, but it's worth it to me. I agree they are finicky machines and take a lot of practise, if I don't use a hump-jumper on EVERY seam my Janome skips stitches 😣

I do not see what the big deal is about pockets. The majority of the things I make do not have pockets. When I do my laundry, I have to check the pockets. When I forget to check the pockets, that's when a tissue was still in the pockets. In the 1990s one of my children left crayons in their pockets and I did not know. Many of my best blouses for work were ruined. I prefer no pockets.

Oh dear - you're really stirring up a hornet's nest now 😂 . I can see where you're coming from although I don't agree on all points. I love pockets - but that's mostly because I never know what to do with my hands if I don't have pockets to put them in 😅 it's bad I know but it's just me. I sort of agree about labels - they can be really itchy but the main reason I don't use them is because I would never remember to put them in. But I'm glad you aired your opinions on these things - we're all different and I always enjoy watching you.

Brilliant, pockets, agree, it seems that when posing for a photo, hands in pockets is the trend. As for tissues 😢 Sewing Bee, its ridiculous, the standard this year is poor, also box ticking bbc exercise. One gay, one disabled, one black, one elderly, throw in a trans and its all coveted. Pins, I'm ok with, but agree, clips are heavy, esp on light fabrics. Labels, its another fad, must have labels, I cut all mine out of rtw, they irritate and itch, hate them, and yes, I unpick the seams to get every bit out. And the price of them. No thanks. I have a couple, KZbinr's always look down at something on the floor when modelling their garment, what is it exactly? And posh buttons, I won't name the brand, but they all rave about these buttons that cost a fortune. Enjoyed your vlog.😊

I’ve not bought labels- I think sewing is expensive enough! Plus they’re itchy and putting them inside a garment seems a waste, so when I’ve been gifted them I do see them to the outside of things! Pockets though- I agree they hang terribly at times but I need pockets! I have my phone in my right pocket at all times and if I’m going out my keys go in my left pocket. If you’re pottering round the house- where do you put your phone? I typically have music or an audiobook playing to my AirPods so I I have the case for them in my pocket too. Also, we need pockets because of the patriarchy 😂 Did you never used to buy jeans that had stupid short pockets (that nothing fit in) because then the shape was more ‘flattering’ 🤮 Women don’t need that kind of bullshit in our lives. Give us function over form so we can go ahead and solve the world’s problems without worrying if we have a bag that matches our shoes 😂

Yes I do use my phone for music and podcasts a lot of the day... I tend to just put it down and then lose it! You can often find me walking about the house shouting 'Hey siri' in the hopes that he will direct me towards my phone 😂 So true about the patriarchy, just because I carry a bag at all times I am the kids pack horse!! Although my dear husband does often carry it for me when I get too overloaded ❤️ I am consciously trying never to use the word 'flattering' on my channel... it's amazing how often it's the word that comes to mind 😱
