Beijing’s iconic Sanlitun bar street opened in the early 1990s, and is considered the start of Beijing’s then nascent bar and nightclub scene. But in late 2022, the government said the structural safety of the bars on the street was no longer suitable for operation, and asked owners to vacate the premises by Jan 31, 2023. Officials say the street will eventually reopen and retain its brand after renovations.

As a Beijinger, I'm used to it. People from other provinces say that Beijingers are superior and have best of literally everything. But in fact, we lost a lot. In the past few years, in order to so-called rectify the appearance of the city, Beijing demolished a large number of shops and grocery stores and turned them into concrete walls. In addition, fireworks and firecrackers are banned in Beijing during Chinese New Year. Now is the Sanlitun bar street. I have nothing to say but sigh.

A city looses its charm when every building is built with glass and hosts the same multinational brands. Sadly many cities in Asia are pulling down older buildings in the name of progress. What will be left is a souless monument devoted to excessive consumerism.

I think they will build a traditional bars in sanlitun equipped with fire safety and new technologies. The Beijing local government wanted Beijing to become an international consumption place where people can enjoy. I think they will also add a dance club structures for seniors to be used just like ballroom dancing

If they won't renovate those old bars, it will be wiped out if a fire happen. I think the Beijing local government saw the danger of old bars which will become disastrous if it will caught fire

To all western trolls,if you don't know what happen to a market in china who caught a big fire last year. That market wiper out after a fire happen, no single structure survived the fire. The local government of Beijing doesn't want that to happen with sanlitun. They will retain that sanlitun bar street after renovation but it will become a high class bar street equipped with new technologies and fire safety structures.

This sanlitun bar street will become a bar street in Gangnam once it was finished renovation. This will become a new itaewon where many bars and ktv will open but I think it will become much classy to suite the design of sanlitun

It was one of the most popular nighttime spots in Beijing -- pretty much _the only_ thing to do at night in Beijing... Very popular among young Chinese and foreigners alike. Just because you don't like it is not a reason to get rid of it. Surely, a city of more than 20 million people can have a couple spots that aren't personally tailored to your tastes?
